“Elegant boutique hotel - perfect for special events”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We hosted a reception dinner at the Frangipani Tree for our friends who had come from more than 20 different countries to celebrate our wedding with us. The event exceeded our expectations in every way. Through the whole planning process we felt well taken care off. We met multiple times with the owner for food tastings and for the selection of the different dinner courses. The managers Justyna and Wojciech as well as the rest of the staff did an amazing job with decorations and last minute preparations and made sure our guests felt at home. The service was great and the food delicious and all our guests had a very good time. A memorable evening for sure.

We rented the whole place for three nights so we could have a few more relaxing days with close friends and family. We loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves. The Frangipani Tree is an elegant boutique hotel. The look and feel of the whole place is a pleasure. The rooms are very spacious and tastefully designed and furnished with spectacular outdoor bathrooms. You can’t swim in the sea in front of the hotel, but if you are lucky you get to spot turtles playing in the water.

All in all we had an amazing time and I highly recommend this place! Again a big thank you to the Frangipani crew for making our stay such a wonderful experience.

We stayed at the Frangipani Tree for 3 nights at the end of our trip to Sri Lanka. It was a lovely, relaxing way to spend the last couple of nights. It is a stunning, beach front hotel with enormous rooms, a beautiful outlook and friendly staff. The included breakfast was delicious - fresh curd, fruit, eggs, bacon and sausages.

If you are after a hotel in the centre of Unawatuna, this is not the place for you. The beach at the front of the hotel is not suitable for swimming, and it will cost you 400 rupees each way to get to Unawatuna, and 750 to get to Galle. We were more than happy to pay that to avoid the crowds of tourists, and it was a great feeling to come back to our beautiful room with only the sound of the surf to listen to.

We loved every minute, and hope to go back!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor have excellent views and seem to be a lot larger.

Very friendly staff me and my family felt very welcome. Great food .Our rooms were extremely well appointed and very spacious. If you're flying all the way the Sri Lanka this is the place to stay! The hardest part will be leaving the property to see the rest of this beautyfull country

We stayed at the Frangipani Tree for 1 week and we had the most wonderful holiday!
The rooms are beautiful. We stayed in Olive Ridley 3 which was a lovely big room as we have 2 young children. They added in a cot and a small bed both with mosquito nets for the children.
The kids had fun in the pool and build sand castles on the beach.
The food was authentic and very good. We especially loved the lobster and prawn curries and the breakfast was super.
Justyna the manager was very helpful suggesting places for us to visit.
We will hopefully be back very soon!

We travelled to Frangipani Tree to get married. I found this hotel actually by accident and fell in love with it straigh away. Usually when you check pictures on the website they look much better then in reality but not in this case. Place is stunning, staff so warm and welcome, food out of this world (actually prepared by one of the best Sri Lankan chefs)and surroundings just magnificent. We stayed only 4 nights but our experience set our bar of expectation sooooooooo hight that nothing after that on our travels around Sri Lanka did not match them not even our honeymoon in Maldives. I can write essay about this place. It is trully Sri Lankan gem. I would say that it is ideal for coules who seek privacy and romance... I also recommend this place for small and intimate weddings. Staff will do anything they can to help you out and make your dreams come true. In our case it was the manager called Nuwan who made sure that everything we wanted came to life. He really went an extra mile and I cannot thank him enough for that. We are planning to visit Sri Lanka again for our anniversary and we will come back to Frangipani Tree for sure. I would also go and check their 'sister hotel' owned by the same owner called The Fort Printers. It is in nearby town called Gale. It is very similar in style but because it is in the city has little bit more buzz. Both hotels are just stunning with an amazing service and top quality food. With my husband we travel quite a bit but this was the best experience we've ever had.I would say it is little bit of heaven on earth. It was the first time ever that I actually cried when I was leaving the hotel. We just looooooooved it. Thank you Shahzad, Nuwan, Justina and the rest of Frangipani Tree. We love you and miss you loads.xxx Lenka and Martin

I stayed at the hotel in February for a wedding and have to say that the setting is beautiful and the management were really attentive and did a great job with arrangements. The food was wonderful and the rooms are very spacious. The outdoor bathroom is stunning, really gorgeous. A couple of things: there is no ability to put a spare bed in the room for a second adult. One of us slept in the bed and the other on the 'sofa' which was a bit small and uncomfortable but we managed. I can't say that the rooms are actually comfortable. Everything (the inside and outside) is molded out of concrete, which while it adds to the style/design, it's not really soft and comfortable to be lazing around (which I like to do). There are sunbeds outside and for some reason, all the other villas were laid out with towels, ours was not. A small thing but it bothered me. There is a lounge area, but it's not really a lounge, again it's not comfortable as the seating is very formal, it would be a good idea to put some really comfy seating in there and have a small bar in the corner, I think this would be a much better use of the space. There is some noise here from the road, but this is really to be expected, it's the same in India and other places in Asia I have travelled and didn't bother me at all. Take ear plugs if this could be a concern. I didn't hear/see a train line so not sure what people are referring to in other reviews. You cannot see the beach from the ground floor rooms as there is a grass bank between the property and the beach, but you can hear the sound of the waves crashing, which is gorgeous. The beach is not for swimming, but is stunning at sunset with its palm trees. The hotel is a short tuk tuk ride to some good beach restaurants and we ate at these most nights (fantastic value). There is no wi-fi in the rooms, only in the lounge/close to the lounge. We had valuables stolen from our room while we were there so be aware of security - we were outside at the time so not sure how they got past us - they have security personnel at the hotel but there doesn't appear to be any security from the beach side so be aware.

When we arrived at the Frangipani Tree we were really blown away. The grounds and buildings are just beautiful. They had planned to put us in one of the larger upstairs rooms but we requested a change to something with outdoor space to accommodate my smoker husband, and they were quick to assist and gave us a choice of rooms overlooking the sea with our own private terrace. We chose one set off away from other rooms for privacy. We had a stunning outdoor bathroom and very spacious bedroom. However there are a few things that didn't feel lived up to the standard of the accommodation. There are no phones in the room, so if you need anything such as food or drinks you have to go and hunt for someone to provide it. Also there are no curtains or fly screens on the windows so if you want to quickly get changed or something you have to open the windows, close the shutters and then open them all up again. It also means you can't stay in the room with the windows open for fear of bugs. How a hotel of this calibre can fail to provide wi if in rooms I don't know. It's my choice if I choose to 'switch off' from the outside world or not and having to go and sit at the restaurant every time I needed to get online was a pain. Lastly, despite the location of our room I didn't feel we got the privacy we wanted. On our first day the staff weren't busy ( the hotel was almost empty) so they started up a game of cricket. Right next to our room where I was trying to sunbathe. I don't begrudge anyone a break when it's quiet, but why they had to choose to do it right next to where I was lying I don't know and at one stage I got hit by the ball. The quietness of the hotel also meant that we felt we were just being watched by the numerous staff. It didn't feel helpful, it felt nosey. I was also put out that the staff seemed to feel it was ok to go in and out of our room at their own discretion. Having left some sunglasses and a kindle outside the room one day we returned from the pool to find them inside the bedroom. The staff later told us it was because there have been a number of thefts from people passing on the beach which is understandable, but surely they should come and ask before wandering in and out of the rooms? We were considering staying a third night but this issue with the staff made us choose not to and we moved on. It's a shame as when it's busier this probably isn't an issue, but I found it really intrusive. Frangipani Tree is so close to being a great place but it's just not quite there yet.
