In choosing a place to stay in Costa Rica, it's important to keep in mind what the other alternatives are. Hotels and B&Bs in Costa Rica are not like those found in the United States.

My dad and I were traveling together, and our main needs were two beds and a private bathroom. We thought a B&B would be a good choice.

It took us a long time to find the B&B once we reached Santa Elena. It's on the dirt road behind the grocery store. There is parking available. The staff here was very nice and helpful, and they spoke English well, which we didn't find in other parts of the country. The woman who makes breakfast was efficient and able to accommodate to our needs.

Our room had one double bed and a set of bunk beds. We were given sheets, blankets and towels, which was very much appreciated. The bathroom was clean, though we didn't get hot water from the shower. There was no air circulation in the room, so it was a bit stuffy as well. And the key to our room didn't work; it took us several minutes to lock and unlock the room. The free wifi worked one of the three nights we were there.

This was a decent hotel for the price (my dad called it "passable"), but it's not a B&B by American standards. I would say it's more of an upscale hostel, which is fine. I would return, but anyone who books should be aware that it's not your typical B&B.

I must recommend Camino Verde BB in Monteverde for several reasons. It was quite inexpensive, included a good breakfast, was very clean, and the location was good-close to down town Sant Elena , but away from the noise. Probably most importantly though, was the manager, Jose Retana. He was informative, friendly, and extremely patient. He enhanced our stay by recommending and booking tours and transportation.

We stayed 5 nights at Camino Verde Bed & Breakfast in February.
On arrival we were told that there was a double booking & we would be in different accommodation for our first night. Not the best of starts. This room was small, dark & not very inviting & we would not have stayed there  for more than 1 night. Not being able to unpack & having to leave our luggage at reception the next morning did rather spoil our plans for our first full day.
However, once we were settled into Camino Verde B& B, we were more than happy with our room. (room 18) we enjoyed the small sitting area overlooking the hills & Nicoya Peninsula. Very good value.  Free wifi was brilliant & there are also 2 computers for guest use- including head phones for Skype calls. We made use of the communal fridge & there is a small gas hob for cooking.
Jose the manager does an excellent job.  He is able to provide information on all the activities in the area- we came just to see the cloud forest & were amazed that most visitors are here to zip line, be superman, bungy jump etc. It was exhausting watching the rush to do all this in 48 hours before dashing off to the next adrenaline spot. How Jose deals with all this & makes sure that their plans will fit together as people throw credit cards at him is a joy to behold.
Jose is very knowledgeable about his country & is so very helpful. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for him. He is willing to give guests lots of time to help in their onward plans- all done  with a smile.
We enjoyed eating at Tico & Rico's & guests can take a 10% discount card with them from Jose.
Breakfast was available from 6.15 which was great for early trips to the rainforest.
As said, we were pleased with our room, but one small point- bathroom bins need to be emptied daily.
The wind- it can HOWL day & night. We are windsurfers & are used to sleeping in windy places. A family from Canada however didn't get much sleep for 3 nights. Perhaps invest in earplugs??

Hello frieds,

Thank you so much for all you input, I'm happy you had a good time and enjoyed breakfast. We will start with purchasing some ear plugs. It's very hard to deal with the wind, we are in a very windy spot.

Thank's again

My brother and I, who are both in college, traveled to Monteverde with our parents and I truly believe that our stay was so wonderful because of all the help and advice that Jose offered while we were staying at Camino Verde. We could book all of our tours right there, and he really helped us make the most of our time in Monteverde. Our whole family enjoyed our stay there. It was a great place to come back and relax after spending the day hiking/zip lining around. Even better, the breakfasts were delicious!

Top of a hill area but 5 min walk into town! It seemed far at first when driving in but then you realize going down town is just down the road to the grocery store. The place was clean and the beds were big.
Make sure if u cancel that you do it 48 hrs before check in opposed to the stay. I got in trouble for that and had to pay 50% of the night I didn't stay. The breakfast you order it the night before and they are great on being on time for that. You can book tours, private drivers, whatever you want from the front desk.

Found this Bed and Breakfast through hostels.com. After a beautiful drive (about 4hrs) from Tamarindo, it was a pleasure to meet Jose the manager. He helped us with maps and a breakdown of all Monteverde has to offer. He can book all your activities from the main office. He evewn helped us find a SuperBowl party at a local bar. Great time!
We ended up booking the morning walking tour through the Santa Elana cloud forest. We felt it was not worth the money. We did not see any animals and only 4 different types of birds, etc. Boring two hours. We also booked the Extremo zip line adventure. It was a great deal. I have done many ziplines but this was the best. The Superman zip was unbelievable.

We booked the standard room with bathroom with a free breakfast. (i would highly recommend the pancakes with fruit). The beds were comfortable and rooms clean.
Overall we had a great stay and I would definitely recommend hostel to anyone going to Monteverde!
