Hey,
me and my girlfriend were staying at "el tucan" for a night. We wanted to stay longer, cuz we wanted to do some trips the next days.
When we woke up the next moring there was a piece of paper at our door that said that we had to leave untill 10pm, cuz there are "reservations". The owner and (!) the guy at the reception knew that we wanted to stay longer (we told them the evening before) but they also know that we did not book a tour at their place (we found a cheaper one). So they just kicked us out!!!

Incredible. And in the morning nobody was there to tell us why. Just a woman at the reception, who didn't know anythink and wasn't able to read and understand at least the paper that was on our door...

Poor service, unfriendly and just looking for profit.
Thanks for nothing!

I travelled alone and therefore got a tiny room with just 1 big bed and windows to the corridor with breakfast (real MILK and coffee all day; toast, jam, butter, pineapple, bananas and eggs for frying yourself) for about 12 dollars per night. In general all rooms are really small and there is no own bathroom to rent - there are only 2 shared bathrooms with warm water as well - and the whole hotel is made out of wood therefore windy and not that quite. There are no dorms, but a chilling room with a kitchen, some tables, hammocks and 3 computers. the staff is nice, but NOT available the whole day (only from about 7 am to 10 pm), and offers lots of tours (which are expensive in whole monteverde). the hotel is in the center (2 banks, the bus station, bars and restaurants are really near) and in the opposite restaurant "el morpho" you get your 1st drink combinating with dinner for free when you are guest of el tucan.
ALL IN ALL: small, nice, good breakfast, good position, but maybe there are better places...i didnt check.

I've spend 3 night at the hotel ElTucan and I was very happy. For only 10$ a night I had a beautifull room with a free breakfeast, cofee all time, and free internet (3 computers). The boss Tony was really nice with us, he gave us some good advice and the guy from the front desk gave us good suggestion for some trip in the city. I removed some points for service beacause i never had a hoosekeeper who did our room (thats was ok for me) and the sleep quality because there's a lot of activity in the morning from the street and the customers.

Located on the corner of the bottom of a hill, the Tucan is definitely noisy. Rooms are simple and comfortable for the budget traveler. You can't beat $25 a night for a double room with private bathroom (best deal in all of Costa Rica!). The hot water shower is extremely temperamental, so get in quick while it's warm but don't expect it to stay that way. Breakfast of eggs and toast in the communal kitchen is self service in the morning (but a great bonus) and wifi is included as well. EVAN, the guy at the front desk, is amazing! He helped recommend and arrange all of our activities while in Monteverde with honest opinions and without being pushy (and he even booked our travel arrangements for our time in Arenal/La Fortuna - which was a huge help!). We found Evan to be so valuable that when our friends flew into Cost Rica we all went back to the Tucan because I knew Evan would make sure we had a good time.

I would like to start off and say, bring your umbrella or rain coat. In the monteverde/saint elana area it always rains. So to Hotel Tucan, the main worker at the front desk is a great guy. Born and raised in monteverde knows the ins and outs. He told us about a hollow tree in which you can climb. It took my girlfriend a few wrong turns and a more then happy tico to show us the 'real tree.' Well worth the trip. Hotel El Tucan served its purpose and more. With rockbottom prices and its perfect location it comes well recommended. Granted you dont get the best setup but the workers will bend over backwards to help out.

P.S. We never received hot water but the owner swears we turned the 'knob' all the way up and if you only turn it slightly, the hot water will turn on . To be determined

Chose to stay at El Tucan after leaving another nearby hotel. El Tucan was a far better value. The rooms are very clean and cozy, all dark wood, a great cabin feel. The staff is very knowledgeable and can arrange tours, but are not pushy. We loved having the communal kitchen to make dinner for a change and meet other guests. The supermarket is very close and it a great way to save a few dollars on going out to eat. The owner Tony is very happy and concerned that all of his guests enjoy their stay. Also Evan who works here is very helpful and friendly. Just a good vibe all around!

I stayed in hotel El Tucan in the summer of 2009 with three other girlfriends. I had moved there after a horrible experience in another hotel in Monteverde - wet rooms, bugs everywhere, no service whatsoever. Tony, the owner of El Tucan, and his family were extremely welcoming, booked us an excellent ziplining tour, and provided us with extremely clean, comfortable rooms. Everything was very basic, but clean. It was probably one of the best hostels I stayed in during my two weeks in Costa Rica. I would absolutely recommend staying here if you're in Monteverde.
