Floorboards directly above reception dont block any noise. So we heard everything - most if noise came from reception. That said tour and bus organisation was helpful and was cheap with mediocre breakfast.

You get free breakfast and free use of the internet...so these are both pluses. And they also have laundry service for a small fee. However, My sister and I were both attacked my bed bug while staying there, Evan at the front desk hit on every girl and by night fall he was hooking up with tourist girls in the main room. It was a good price and in a good location, so if you dont mind being hit on or bed bugs you should go! However, there are many other hostels in the area that are a little less sketchy.

Upon arriving to the Toucan we met the wonderul owner, the place was clean, rooms were nice, free wifi and computers offered for guests, and an okay free breakfast. The only problem was that employee seemed to take the owners absence as a chance to hit on every girl, instead of helping us plan he hit on every girl and at 10 the hostel turned into a late night local hotspot (if you think that sounds appealing, trust me it's not ) he has the potential to be the best but was side tracked. One of the members of our group booked a zip lining trip with him and when the taxi was an hour late she had come to find out that he never actually told them about my reservation. With a few lessons in personal space he could be a wonderful employee Oh and hot water is non existent

Staff very friendly.
Free net and breakfast.
Good location for seeing the sights, very short walk from the bus stop from San Jose.
Rooms are interesting, bit like 'the house that jack built' but clean & tidy none the less. It has character.
Kitchen is well equipped.
Only minor gripe is it can be a bit noisy as it seems you can hear every drunk, barking dog and boy racer in town from your bed...! Town does go quiet around midnight, but we had a 13 hour journey from Manzanillo and wanted some shut eye!

Hey,
me and my girlfriend were staying at "el tucan" for a night. We wanted to stay longer, cuz we wanted to do some trips the next days.
When we woke up the next moring there was a piece of paper at our door that said that we had to leave untill 10pm, cuz there are "reservations". The owner and (!) the guy at the reception knew that we wanted to stay longer (we told them the evening before) but they also know that we did not book a tour at their place (we found a cheaper one). So they just kicked us out!!!

Incredible. And in the morning nobody was there to tell us why. Just a woman at the reception, who didn't know anythink and wasn't able to read and understand at least the paper that was on our door...

Poor service, unfriendly and just looking for profit.
Thanks for nothing!

I travelled alone and therefore got a tiny room with just 1 big bed and windows to the corridor with breakfast (real MILK and coffee all day; toast, jam, butter, pineapple, bananas and eggs for frying yourself) for about 12 dollars per night. In general all rooms are really small and there is no own bathroom to rent - there are only 2 shared bathrooms with warm water as well - and the whole hotel is made out of wood therefore windy and not that quite. There are no dorms, but a chilling room with a kitchen, some tables, hammocks and 3 computers. the staff is nice, but NOT available the whole day (only from about 7 am to 10 pm), and offers lots of tours (which are expensive in whole monteverde). the hotel is in the center (2 banks, the bus station, bars and restaurants are really near) and in the opposite restaurant "el morpho" you get your 1st drink combinating with dinner for free when you are guest of el tucan.
ALL IN ALL: small, nice, good breakfast, good position, but maybe there are better places...i didnt check.
