“you get what you pay for”
Reviewed 10 December 2013

We spent 2 nights here and the room was very dingy and dark and damp feeling. we shared a bathroom which was also pretty gross, and when it was out of toilet paper, the staff wouldn't replace it until the morning. however, location is great, staff was for the most part very helpful and spoke great english. felt safe here and lots of travellers to hang out with in the area. great restaurant up the hill called Tico something? best price for best food in the main town.
overall, we paid very little to stay here, so we weren't expecting the four seasons, we got what we paid for and it was probably worth it to have more money to spend on the awesome night walks and suspension bridge walks in the area! in a place as beautiful as Monteverde, you won't want to spend much time in your room anyhow.

Room Tip: one room we were shown didn't have any windows, which wasn't ok with me (maybe I worry too m...

We stayed here for two nights. The staff was very helpful in giving information, and we got a discount on a private room. However, the room was next to the main street and there was a lot of traffic. And the first night there were people outside making a lot of noise until 4 am, who turned out to be guests from the hostel, and friends of the staff. I had to tell them to be quiet twice. When I complained the next morning it was denied by the staff, but the noisy guys left anyway. The second night was better, although the beds weren't great. We decided to spend the third night in another hostel anyways. So good for a cheap stay for one night, but by no means comfortable.

Right "downtown" Santa Elena with a good place to sit out front and enjoy a beer or three. Staff were helpful in booking tours which can be paid for right at the hostel reception. Minus a point since the shared washrooms and kitchen could use some TLC. Good option for a hostel.

Overpriced and Unreasonable Service.
We arrived Monteverde and took our washing into El Toucan Hostel. The manager/owner (Tony) insisted on weighing our clothes soaking wet and when we mentioned this would weigh twice as much as dry clothes he said it would not make any difference to the final price.
We picked our clothes up the following day and when we weighed our clothes they weighed half as much as the day before. The manager (Tony) refused our request to recalculate the price based on clothes that were dry and subsequently we had to pay $10 for our washing and not $5. The manager was quite rude and laughed at our request to reweigh our clothes.
We would not recommend this Hostel to anyone given the overpriced and unreasonable service we received from the Manager of El Toucan Hostel.

Randomly stayed here after a nice lady persuaded us to when we got off the bus. We managed to get a discounted room for $7 a night, private room too! And they were so helpful arranging canopy tours and jeep boat jeep services etc. Rooms are clean and bathrooms are fine.
You can cook your own breakfast in the morning and there is free fruit which they also supply.
Would highly recommend this place!
