“Clean, efficient and good breakfasts!!”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

Cleanest hostel I've stayed in CR so far! Private bathroom for each 4-bed dorm, great breakfast daily! Yorle is extremely efficient - got me onto a night walk tour the same evening when I arrived at 5.40pm!! Booked a few more tours through the hostel - high quality and fairly priced. Good atmosphere and met great people at the hostel! Recommend to all.

Have been travelling around Central America for 3 months and this is the best all round hostel/backpackers we've stayed in! Breakfast is delicious (and included), showers are hot, prices are very reasonable, rooms are very clean, location is Central and the owner is so super helpful!!! Yorle, the owner, bent over backwards to help us organise our tours of which we changed and cancelled and rearranged a few times... but nothing was too much hassle. I read a previous review from some other travellers about the rates charged for the activities which is actually ridiculous - If they had had a look around they'd realise that these are flat rates around town. Definitely recommend the coffee/chocolate/sugar cane tour - you get you're moneys worth! Yorle is fantastic and makes you feel at home... Did I mention there is also a kitchen that you can use with a great supermarket up the road! We would 100% stay here again if we return to Monteverde! 5 stars for this place!

Me and my friend (both female) were trying to find a "cheap" place to stay and safe for our backpacks to stay during the day. After having arrived, we were told it was a very good option in Monteverde. We checked out the room which was clean, and well taken care of. The only thing was when we started talking to Yorle about the different activites around Monteverde she would continue to "tap, tap, tap" at her calculator and all of a sudden we would have a bill way over $100, which was way too much for us (2 20-year-olds) to be spending. She ended up sending us on our way to a free hike, supposedly 1 hour up, 1 hour down with a beautiful view at top. We went on our way up the mountain, 2 hours later we were standing beside a service tower with the smallest view and the biggest dissapointment. She will try to suck you dry, and if you don't abide, she will send you on your way to dissapointment.

Room Tip: Please, just stand your ground and don't let her push you around with your money. If she see'...

We arrived in the evening on New Years Eve at this hostel, having made reservations for five nights. Having seen the small room, consisting of three beds, a TV on the wall, a minimal bedtable and no space left to move, we started wondering if this was really the place to stay with our five year old and our very active one and a half year old baby. After realizing that the only place left to socialize was the tiny kitchen, we started to blame ourselves for not having made a more thorough research before we made the reservation. When our baby was looking down from a big hole in the fence on the second floor, we made the decision to move for safety reasons. Hoping that the owner, Yorle, would understand our concern with the safety from a babys point of view, we told her that unfortunately we could not stay for more than one night. We where told that we where free to move, but since she'd turned down other requests we had to pay for the whole reservation. This was the first time we'd had to pay for a reservation, having travelled Costa Rica for four months. After having paid, we stayed one night in the room and the morning after we moved to another hotel. We kept the key, since we'd payed for the room. When we came back to return the key the night before checkout, there was another couple staying in our room, unaware of us having a second key. Yorle told us that she was free to rent the room to anyone, since we weren't using the room. When we, as well as the other couple, told her that this was totally wrong for security reasons, she was unwilling to accept our opinions. Our impression of the owner of Sloth Backpackers is that she neither care for the safety of her guests nor is willing to treat them with respect.

I always try to be positive whatever happens. So, when we arrived at the place and the lady told us that the fee was $2 up than the expected, I took a deep breath and payed it. When I saw that the room was too small for us, I took another deep breath and coped with it. But, at some point, the annoying things were so many that I ended up freaking in anger before the day was over.

I'm amazed by all the good reviews because our experience was quite different. After thinking for a while, I found the reason. If you're a foreigner and you book tours, you'll get the best service. But if you plan the trip on your own and have the plus of being costarican, be prepared to have the worst service of your life.

The owner was very rude to us. She didn't give us the free breakfast (and expected us to pay $4 extra for it) alleging that it wasn't included in the private bedroom fee (which we didn't asked). She kept speaking loudly right in front of our bedroom until 11:30 pm (what is curfew?). She even told me through the phone that she threw away some stuff I had left on the bedroom (which wasn't true because she returned it to me, but what is the need to say something like that??). In life, you better treat everyone the best you can, you never know who you are dealing with. One of us is planning on visiting Monteverde again soon and guess which is the last place he's going.

On other aspects, the rooms are not clean. The sound of cars won't let you sleep. The kitchen is nice, but if you use it don't expect any smile.

I know that for the price you can't expect to be treated like a superstar. But still for the same price you can get a decent attention at many other hostels of the area. We stayed at another place and spent a wonderful night, if you were thinking I'm just an overreacter. If you don't want bad reviews don't keep on answering them with excuses, just do your job right.

It's clean, short ways to all the interesting things in santa elena/monteverde. The owner Yorle can book trips to the national reserves for the same price as in the park itself.
Plus she showed us a sloth in the surroundings!

Nice place, beds are good, blankets are warm the room is spacious and the sanitary is good. The only thing this place really lacks is a place to socialize as the kitchen is only open for a limited time.
Ooh and the funniest toilets I have ever seen!
