“wonderful trail round gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2013

We stayed here for two nights as part of a tour. The room was clean with a giant bath tub but we couldn't work the plug! Breakfast and lunch compared well with other hotels in the area. It was great to hear the dawn chorus with a variety of sounds. The trail round the grounds was amazing as we saw a Motmot bird, coati (like racoons) and giant butterflies plus lines of leaf carrying ants.
Lots to do in the area. Butterfly farms, frog collections and hummingbird areas. Santa Elena was full of backpackers and other places to eat. Staff at the hotel were very helpful when we had transport issues.

Room Tip: rooms facing the forest have a peaceful view

We stayed here for 2 nights , we had 2 rooms and they were sufficient for our needs, they were in the main building nothing fancy. We saw no swimming pool or hot tub or any other amenities. Breakfast was limited not buffet style . The food was brought to your table and you had to ask for more if you wanted more. If you are driving the entrance is hard to see and can be easily missed. There was adequate parking, although there were several bus tours in the days we were booked in. We would probably stay there again as it was quiet, clean and easy to get there, once you knew where the entrance was .

We stayed here with a group of about 25 just after Christmas 2012. We used this as a base of operations for seeing the sights around St. Elena.
We ate dinner here twice. We ordered off the menu and everything was great. Breakfasts were a fixed menu. We were served as we arrived so we didn't need to eat en masse and the food was fresh.
The rooms are in stand-alone units of 4-8 rooms. Some are two-story, some one. Ours had a balcony and we were on the second floor. This gave us a nice breeze and views. The bathroom had a whirpool but we only used the shower. The room was quite spacious and the balcony allowed us to dry wet clothing after a day's adventures.
We went walking around the grounds to see birds, but you could just stand outside your door or on the balcony to see many different species. We saw a beautiful golden-browed chlorophonia in the tree just outside our room, and what we think was a variegated squirrel.
Santa Elena is a small hamlet reached by three dirt roads. It's way off the beaten track and in late December it's nestled right under the clouds. It's cool, wet and very windy. If you want a luxury spa or want to get drunk in the bar, spare everyone and go elsewhere. If you want to see flora and fauna you won't see elsewhere, stay here.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms have a skylight over the shower. This is a nice feature. The winds can be qui...

This hotel is located in between Santa Elena and Monteverde. A bit of a walk to both places. The room was spacious comfortable and had a fridge. No lock box in the room but we felt safe and didn't need one. We had a view of a valley and enjoyed the many birds that came to the tree by our room. As someone else said no shampoo or lotion and soap was in dispensers at the sink and in the shower/tub. Good food in dining room - we ate all three meals there.

Up on a hill, isolated. Nice views, clean. No pool, no hot tub. Towels frayed, some had holes. Bed was like sleeping on a rock.No shampoo, conditioner, or lotion offered. Soap is in dispensers. Would look for something else.

We spent 2 nights here during our trip to Costa Rica. The hotel room was spacious and well equipped and we were able to dry laundry by opening windows to get a breeze through, even though it was raining most of the time. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful.

Room Tip: We were on the lower end of the property with a view over the Gulf of Nicoya. Sunsets were spectact...

Not fancy, but the room was clean and spacious with a porch that looked out over the mountains to the Pacific ocean. The hotel lobby was nicely appointed and open. There is a nice little bar off to the side in a separate building with a TV and chairs - and very reasonable beer. The dining room looks out over the forest to the Pacific. The food was very good. Breakfasts were made to order with lots of fresh fruit and juice. The hotel staff was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable and we could not have made our way down the mountain to Quepos without the help of the manager.
It is cool in the mountains and we were glad we had jeans and our fleece jackets. A scarf is also a good idea. When we were there it was really windy and misty - which made it feel colder We used both extra blankets at night, as the rooms are not heated. We were warned tho, as the literature on this part of our stay said that the lodging in the mountains (Monteverde) is not luxurious.
While the room was simple it was roomy with lots of counter space to put belongings and spread out. Wifi was available in the lobby. Local phone calls were free. We thought this hotel was very adequate and enjoyed our stay. The location was good and getting into Santa Elena was easy as the hotel is right on the main road.

Room Tip: We liked our room which was down the hill a bit. We could drive our car right up to the door which m...
