“Excellent for family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

We've been traveling in cr for 6 weeks, this has been our favorite hotel. We are in a detached, 2 bedroom house, so there is room for us to spread out. Plus, there is a kitchenette where I've been able to prepare some meals. Service and staff have been very attentive.

The name of the house was Susanna's house. The hotel does have wifi, but this house is furthest from the reception, so our wifi coverage was not great in the house, but it is good from the porch and excellent from the reception area. I asked the other travelers and they said wifi coverage was excellent from their rooms. So of you need to get some work done, you might want a room closer to the main reception.

It is up on a hill, so if you are unsteady on your feet (require a cane) this is probably not the hotel for you. Our transport bus would not come up the driveway, while this was not an issue for us, if you are traveling with someone with a disability I would go with another hotel.

We were so comfortable here, I am sure you will be too.

My bride and I had a great time in the honeymoon suite of this wonderful European lodge. The accommodations were wonderful and we had a beautiful hilltop vista of the rest of the area. The only drawback was that some of the late night revelers in town kept us up late Friday night with their partying. It seems sound travels well in that area and not all the wildlife is in the forest. The lodge itself and the honeymoon cabin were absolutely terrific, however. We were there in April of 2013 (despite what the rest of the review said).

Room Tip: Try to pick a room/lodge away from the crowd/restaurant noise.

There are a lot of places to stay in the Monteverde/Santa Elena area but I would definitely recommend this one! I stayed here with my parents, and we had a small room with two bunk beds but it worked out perfectly. It is in a beautiful location and the included breakfast was AMAZING. A great way to start off a day with lots of activity. At one point I was the only one in the breakfast room and some white-faced monkeys came by to visit! The staff were very friendly and joined me in feeding them some bananas.

This was the first place we stayed in Costa Rica while on our honeymoon and it blew us away. We arrived after an extremely long days travel and were quite grumpy and tired as the drive up is very intense and quite a thrill, especially after the long flight. It is hours on a very bumpy unimproved dirt road with lots and lots of ruts and crazy corners, no guardrail and VERY long cliffside drops. Don't expect to get any sleep on the way to Monteverde, but who goes on vacation to sleep? :-) If you are well endowed as I am, I highly reccommend a sports bra for the drive to save you from a lot of unnecessary discomfort! ;-)

Driving through town and passing many of the other places we had considered my expectations we EXTREMELY low for Arco Iris. Boy was I wrong!

We arrived and were completely blown away by their grounds and location. It is situated a five minute walk up the hill from town and is so beautiful! Very close proximity to groceries, shops, bars (Bar Amigos is so much fun!) and restaurants yet it feels a bit secluded and is much quieter than the places that are down the hill. We were greeted by a friendly expat named Michael who gave us many recommendations of where to go and what to eat, super helpful! He gave us a map of town and marked a few places on it for us, gave us the rundown on breakfast and the services offered and then walked us to our room.

We splurged on the honeymoon cabin and have to say, we LOVED IT! It was secluded on the back of the property, impeccably clean (not a single bug in the room until the hubby left the only window without a screen open for 10 minutes. The following spider hunt was quite hilarious!) and extremely well appointed. The furniture and all of the hand made woodwork are so beautiful and the bed was so comfortable it was hard to tear ourselves from it the next morning!

We arrived to flowers, fresh fruit in the kitchenette, chocolates by the bed and a bottle of sparkling wine in the refrigerator, unexpected touches that really made us smile. Unfortunately we didn't have time to enjoy the whirlpool tub but it looked amazing. The bathroom is gorgeous with stone from floor to ceiling and the shower had fairly consistent hot water, which was fabulous and a great surprise. It was well lit from a large solar tube in the ceiling negating the need to use any lights during the day. Large windows that look out on the town make this cozy cabin feel even larger than it is!

We truly enjoyed sitting on the private patio watching the lightning show occurring over town and waking up to the sounds of the jungle. The included breakfast was good and service was fantastic. They grow a lot of the food they serve in a very neat onsite green house and they strive to be as eco-conscious as possible. The location felt very safe, the resident dogs were very sweet and mostly stayed to themselves but would love a pat or two. :-) There is a large white one who sadly has a case of mange but the employees truly care for them and are doing everything they can to heal it up.

We will be back and will be referring this Lodge to anyone who goes to Monteverde!

This is a little gem very close to the center of Santa Elena, built on a hillside. Very short walk to town center. Be prepared, this is not a flat city - you either go up or down, rarely level! Staff is very attentive and happy to book tours with no commission that many places add in. We were able to book the night tour the day we arrived, and other tours on very short notice. The taxis/vans always arrived promptly. We had hoped to see the monkeys, but they did not appear the two of three days we chose to eat their wonderful breakfast. Definitely do the breakfast buffet- $7.50/person with wide assortment of hot dishes (the ever present rice and beans, egg "pancakes" with chopped green beans, fried plantains, etc) and cold items, eggs cooked to order, homemade jams, abundant fresh fruit, assortment of breads, granola, yogurt. They have laundry service which we took advantage of as we were soaked and clothes will not dry by hanging in the shower. Believe me, we tried! Charge was $8/load, but it is done promptly and returned within hours to your room, folded, in a laundry basket, and as expected in Latin America "slightly damp and reeking of soap!" - not a negative, just the way it is!
Very clean, even an outside concrete fountain/sink to wash off muddy shoes.
Do wish they had been a way to block out the light better, especially in the main room where there is a security light that cannot be turned off on the front porch.
Overall, beautiful clean and unique. Three friendly dogs (one did like to acknowledge everyone by barking), a few cats and some horses out back. Nice hike on the property too.
If you pay cash you do get a very small discount of $5/night. (Some places offered a discount of no 13% tax for cash.)
Info about room #20 below.

Room Tip: We were in room #20. Queen bed in separate bedroom, bunk beds and a sofa bed in main room with full...

The service was outstanding, they even rushed to wash our clothes after we got caught in the rain while zip lining. We stayed in the budget rooms which were simple but very clean. This hotel is a very good value for money and has an excellent location. The hotel is located right in the center of town, but sits on a hill, so you feel like you are in nature. We saw monkeys and toucans sitting at breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel for value, friendly staff and superb location.

We only spent one night here, but the room was spotless. The staff was helpful scheduling our canopy tour, and they gladly cancelled it and refunded us when a thunderstorm came along. Their breakfast was a highlight of our trip!
