“Amazing staff”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

It is a long time since I stayed in a 'cheapy' place where all the staff were so knowledgeable and giving of their time to the guests. Amazingly helpful and honest, I camped the first night, but as I was almost blown away I then moved into a room - it was comfortable with exceedingly hot water. Great kitchen, and even a place to dry your shoes if you get soaked (it was a theme of my stay). Finally a great cat :-) it will be perfect once the open fire is added!

This hotel/hostel is definitely the nicest I've experienced in traveling. I paid $48 for a room with a private bathroom and it included two double beds (one in a private loft) and a single bed. You can also get a private room with two doubles and private bath for $40. (These are high season prices). Friends of mine had a room with two double beds (one lofted) and used the shared bathroom and only paid $12 a night. I think this was a wonderful value considering the room was really cozy with a big comfy comforter (it gets rather cold at night sometimes), and the bathroom was really nice and super clean. The reception/common area definitely has a cool hostel vibe with couches and tables, cool artwork and music playing, and free coffee all day long. We extended our stay here because we were enjoying the town and our lodging so much. The girls at reception were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Located right in the middle of town.

Room Tip: I would pay a bit extra for a private bath - they're super nice stone showers and very clean.

Yes, they are, otherways review woud be very bad. We arrived to place with on call booking, offered private room so we accepted it. Probably it was last available chance for that day, but we were tired to change place, so we stayed in a something, what never should be used as room ... dark box without window, pure ventilation, ugly shape of walls, minimum room furniture...

As I am in the business, I did talk to owner and ask for a room if they have a next day. We left for day activities, when we came back, all our things have been moved to nice double private room with large window, balcony and nice bed. It means they do care.

But anyway, in this business should never be such room ever offered - especially when price between those 2 rooms differs 3$ per person!

All other services are perfect, especially people at desk are very fast to ansver any question.

Good value, nice atmosphere, highly recomended for backpacker.

Room Tip: Make shure you will get room, not a cube without windows.

The owners at this hostel, Rand and Shannon were fantastic. We arrived, booked into our private rooms and sat down with Rand to discuss all of the things there were to do in Monteverde. Within an hour we were on our Coffee Planatation tour with the local co-op. It was amazing, we were picked up right at the hostel and taken to a local coffee growers farm. His daughter was the tour guide and spoke English very well. At the end of the tour we were served coffee and homemade banana bread right in their home. They were eager to share their personal stories and we learned all about Costa Rican coffee. The next day we did a guided tour of the Cloud forest and saw a Kitzel, which is very rare so we were extremely lucky. We also did a Canopy Tour with Aventura complete with a superman and tarzan swing. Great fun. The hostel was clean, had a common kitchen and eating area and free wi-fi. The staff were extremely helpful and great to talk to. Monteverde should not be missed on your tour through Costa Rica.

Room Tip: We stayed in private rooms, but they also have dorms.

This place is right in the center of town, thus an easy option if you don't have you own car. The staff is very helpful, suggesting places to eat, booking tours and well-priced shuttles. The place has good communal facilities. We booked what was called one of the newer, nicer rooms but didn't like the room at all. It seemed dirty and was full of mosquitos. There also was not enough water to have a proper shower. So we left the next day to go to a better place (which was clearly more pricy - to be fair). Room was quiet though.

The staff working here is really professional and super friendly! They will help you out with just about everything and even give better advice then the tourist information centre on the corner. They book all the tours for you and for some of them you will receive a discount.
They have free coffee & thee and a large sitting area with a great atmosphere in the evening.
You can read a book or magazine or even take one with you for the road if you leave behind yourself.
The kitchen is quite small for the amount of people that can stay in the hostel. They have a little terrace with street view to just sit and relax.
They offer dorms & private rooms with the option of having your own or shared bathroom.
I preferred to have some time on my own and went for the private room with bathroom. The best 12 dollars I’ve spend in CR . The whole room is just so cosy , a nice looking bed with decent mattress and the shower has hot water. It can rain quite a lot in Monteverde and it gets chilly in the evening, so after a long day there is nothing better then a hot shower!
In overall one of the best hostels I have stayed in at Costa Rica. A really good homy atmosphere but can get a bit crowdy in the evenings.

We loved our stay at the Pensione. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly owners that gave us detailed information on all of the area activities. They were so helpful they even arranged our trip to Panama and it included stops and activities along the way!

Our room was clean and bright (in the new building) and the shower had truly hot water.

Central location with lots of activities within walking distance.

The common area was very comfy with lots of activities and they even have an in-house masseuse.

Highly recommended.
