“Best hotel near Monteverde”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

We really enjoyed our stay at Quetzal Inn. The hotel is located in a quite and peaceful part of town, near the rainforest. The rooms were cosy and beautiful. Sergio gave us a private night time jungle tour. We highly recommend to take this tour. Sergio, as a biologist, was the best tour guide we've ever had. He taught us very much about Costa Rican nature and wildlife.

Our stay was excellent. The lodge style hotel was conveniently located in the heart of Monteverde. It is literally a block away from the Main Street, yet it's tucked away on a small private road which is great because you will get a good night's sleep. The noise can get very loud around the area, especially with all the tour bus shuttles passing by.

Rick the owner is very nice, he made sure we were well accommodated. He gives a lot of free tips to his guests, and can point you out to the best restaurants. He also can book tours for you, right in the lobby. The hotel is a great place to unwind, there are even Koi Fish swimming around in the pool. And for all the cooks out there, the community kitchen is a great place to cook if you choose to go that route. It's very clean and well maintained.

**Added bonus**
If you want to see monkeys, this is the place to be. Every morning they are climbing atop the roof. I actually had the chance to feed one with an orange I had in my bag.

Ive heard this place has had some rocky management in the past, but at this point it cannot be beat. Rick really helped make our stay special in Monteverde. It felt like we were meeting up with an old friend when we got there. The Quetzal in over accommodating and will make sure you get the most out of your stay. By far the best hostel I stayed in while in Costa Rica!

This was one of our favorites. We went to quite a few dumpy hotels in Santa Elena before we found this one. We checked out a few rooms before we found the perfect one, which was more of a guest house with a balcony. For $35 a night this place couldn't be beat. As great as this place is, Rick should really get a whole lot of credit for making it what it is. This guy is so cool, I asked him where I could find a cooler for some beers in the room and he gave me his personal mini fridge! That was a stellar move Rick. He also gave us directions and let us know where to find the best food. For a grand finale he took some bananas out front one morning while we were having breakfast inside and got 6 monkeys running around in the courtyard. Thanks Rick, you are the man.

Room Tip: Check out the free standing guest house toward the back. It is way nicer than the other rooms.

We had just taken the jeep-boat-jeep from La Fortuna to Santa Elena and we were completely drenched and really looking forward to a dry room. It turned out the hotel we were going to stay at was completely booked, but they referred us to the Quetzal Inn. I am so glad they did. The people working there were so kind and generous! I work in the service industry and I was blown away by how far above and beyond the staff went to make us feel at home. We got there pretty late and their kitchen was closed, but the chef, Benedicto, insisted on opening up the kitchen for just the two of us and making us an amazing meal out of whatever he had on hand. Benedicto is an awesome chef! He made us 3 meals over the course of our stay and they were always delicious. He had just recently moved to Santa Elena from the west coast of CR to be the chef in the budding restaurant in the Quetzal Inn. I definitely recommend at least having dinner there if you're not going to stay at the Inn.

They gave us a very clean and pretty room for an extremely low price (less than most of the hostels we'd been staying at). Furthermore, the Inn is set in a nice wooded side street, maybe 50 feet off the triangle of main streets that make up Santa Elena. It's peaceful and beautiful, and both my boyfriend and I most definitely would recommend it.

Dorian and his wife (and son) were amazing hosts. Super hospitable and accomodating. They are more than happy to help with anything from organising tours, to late checkouts. The cabins are nice and comfortable, and although its a very central location it has a very relaxing atmosphere. Has a great communal kitchen and a homely dining area with TV and fireplace. Great place to relax and unwind. The best value hostel Ive found in Costa Rica so far, Thank you for having us!
