Rainbow Valley Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 January 2008

I searched and searched online for the perfect place to stay with my husband and parents. When I read about Rainbow Valley Lodge it sounded perfect and it was. We rented both the upper and lower room for 3 nights. It's in a peaceful location - far enough away from Santa Elena, but not too far. The view is amazing, and if you enjoy wildlife you'll have fun with the coatis and capuchin monkeys that frequent the lodge.

Rolf was exceptionally helpful. He helped me make travel arrangements before we arrived and had lots of advice and tips for things to do in the Monteverde area.

If you like big hotels with fancy swimming pools with bar stools, this may not be the place for you, but if you enjoy peace and nature you'll love it.

It's the best deal in all of Costa Rica.

We stayed 2 nights in the Upper Room at Rainbow Valley Resort.. The owner, Rolf, was great and very helpful and the room was spectacular! Considering our $40 payment I wasn't sure what to expect but the room was wonderful. It was all brand new, built into the mountain with an outstanding view. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom very clean, new and had hot water! There was an amazing and comfortable windowed porch with a kitchenette that allowed us to sit, relax, nap, read and just stare at the beauty before us. There was complimentry coffee and a little fridge and monkeys right outside the window! From here we walked into Santa Elena to eat in about 10 minutes. We were so happy with the room we were anxious to get back after a day of exploring and relax. In our 2 week travel of costa rica, Rainbow Valley provided our most favourite room. This is a hidden jem! I would highly recommend this place, especially the upper room for anyone travelling in the monteverde or santa elena area.

My daughter and I stayed three nights at the Rainbow Valley in the upper floor, and it was absolutely wonderful. I did not want to leave. Immaculate, terrific view of the forests including a wonderful thunder storm to watch when we were there, monkeys watching the windows of the incredible porch in the morning, nice little kitchen with complementary Monteverde coffee, quiet, nice linens, very reasonably priced – you won't believe what you will get for your money!! Just can't say enough about the place, and I'm not the type of person to be complimentary if I didn't like it.

And then there is Rolf, the fun and congenial owner, who lives up the hill. He was great at suggesting activities, tour guides, and transportation, and then booking them at the drop of a hat. Seemed to know everyone in town. The Rainbow Valley is about a 10-15 minute pleasant walk from downtown, but Rolf will have his red pickup truck started and ready to take you before you even can open your mouth to ask him to. Taxis are always waiting in town to take you back for a couple of dollars, or you can walk back like we did a few times. You don't need a car to stay there.

All through the rest of our trip in Costa Rica, every time anyone would mention Monteverde, I would tell them to stay at the Rainbow Valley, and then we would pull out our digital camera and show pictures. No kidding, it is terrific, particularly the upper room with the amazing porch with windows on all four sides (one set of windows looks into the bedroom, but that way the bedroom has the view too).

This property is fairly new, so you could probably still get lucky enough to get a room (there's only two rooms, upper and lower). But as the word spreads, I wouldn't doubt Rolf will be booked up almost all year around.

We loved the Rainbow Valley Lodge! We only stayed for 2 days after having travelled throughout other areas of the country and wish we had stayed longer. When we arrived Rolf had a package prepared for us recommending various tours and companies to use. He even booked for us and arranged transportation. We stayed in the lower room, which was beautiful and very clean. We had monkeys and coatis coming right up to the room! And the view is spectacular. It's a relatively short walk into Santa Elena but a taxi is only about $1.50 US if you're tired or in a hurry. All in all I'll definitely be returning to Rainbow Valley Lodge and for a longer stay next time! The value for your money is incredible.

before i got to Monteverde I was so nervous about where we were to be staying ( Rainbow Valley Lodge) it was so inexpensive that I couldnt believe it had everything that its little website declared. But we went any way ,on the assurance and prompting of my son..And I am so glad. Wow! It was spectacular. what a view, ( (from the top of a mountain thru the valley and all the way out to the pacific coast) The owner Rolf was so hospitable and was so sincerely interested in making all of his guests comfortable and in awe of their surroundings and visit. He goes the 2nd mile to get you everything and everywhere you want. The rooms are meticulous and lovely and tastefully decorated. We had several visits outside our room by capachin monkeys and coatis. they were very playful and friendly. Rolf arranged all the tours , taxis and transportaion that we required, And his bookings were always less expensive than ones we had sourced ourselves.
All in All - a great experience. Cant wait to go back

Just south of Santa Elena, we drove right up to the Rainbow Valley Lodge, where we noted the sign "Minnesotan Spoken Here". Rolf, the owner, was extremely helpful during our visit to Monteverde and Selvatura. He arranged a tour of Monteverde with "Rafa", an excellent and experienced guide. We were extremely lucky to spot 5 quetzals during our tour!

While staying at the Rainbow Lodge, expect visits from a family of coati-mundis and white-faced monkeys. The monkeys are quite inquisitive. If they spot a banana in your room, they will hang around your door constantly!

This is an excellent value and ideal location for your stay around Monteverde!

We spent 3 nights in the top room (book this one if you can) at Rolf’ Rainbow Valley Lodge. It was perfect as we saw coatis, vultures, and on the final morning a troupe monkeys including a baby from our “viewing area” in our room. Rolf is the best – he sorted us out with a jeep-boat-jeep from arenal before we arrived and organised a private tour with Rafa (very informative and good guide) at Monteverde National Park and the Aventura canopy tour … each of these trips was great at the best price around and we wholeheartedly recommend Rolf’s advice.

The hotel is less than 15 mins walk to the centre of Santa Elena, though Rolf drove us in with his pick-up probably 3 times and a taxi is about $1.50 one way. There’s not much to Santa Elena as a town but if you need a base to visit the Monteverde region this place is clean, cheap and gives you great views of the valley and wildlife with a really friendly owner!

If you do go, you have to see the Frog Museum (ranario) in the evening
