Rainbow Valley Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 1 February 2014

We just finished a month of travelling in Central America which included two weeks in Costa Rica. After staying in numerous places, Rainbow Valley Lodge comes out on top as one of our two favorites. We absolutely loved it.

The owner Rolf was great, taking our booking and giving us information before we arrived. He is extremely personable over email. We rented the cabin and it was awesome. We loved having a break from restaurants and cooking in our kitchen, feeding Diablo the coati, and hanging out on our forested deck. It is slightly out of town but you can easily walk back and forth in ten minutes. The cabin was clean and comfortable and the kitchen had everything you could ever need. Coffee was supplied, there was a little gas stove, a toaster and even a blender. Quite honestly, the photos and videos don't do this little guest house justice. It is even better than that. It has rustic charm but is totally comfortable. The cabin has 2 full bathrooms and a third bedroom sink. As three women travelling together, we loved that.

But what really knocked this place out of the park was the service. The Lodge is run by a lovely man named Christian and his family. Christian goes above and beyond to make your stay amazing. If we needed to go to town he drove us. We told him what we were interested in doing and he made recommendations and booked our tours for us. He knew what we needed before we even knew. Christian is just a personable and awesome guy.

You will get the most personable experience of your travelling life between Rolf and Christian. They really pay attention to every detail. You will love staying here.

We've been to Costa Rica several times, and we loved this place. We stayed in the cabin, which was private, quiet, and comfortable. Sitting on the terrace, looking out at the forest, and being visited by coatimundis was a real treat. We saw both toucans and emerald toucanets from the driveway. We chose the cabin because it has full kitchen facilities, and it was, indeed, well equipped enough to cook meals--although we ended up eating out because we were exhausted every evening after our day's activities. The location--just on the other side of the ridge from the main road--is a huge asset. Santa Elena is pretty junky and noisy--fine if you're a 20-year-old backpacker, but we preferred the quiet and seclusion at Rainbow Valley Lodge, and yet you're only a short drive from everything. Rolf the owner is fantastic: very helpful and friendly. The overseer, Christian, is also an amazing guide. He found quetzels for us, and quite a number of other terrific birds (highland tinamous were a special treat), as well as a lot of wildlife. Christian also set us up with another guide, Raphael, who was equally wonderful. "Rafa" took us on a night tour (which you should definitely do), which included several highlights: he lured a tarantula out of its hole by dangling an insect in front of it; he had us turn off our flashlights and walk through the forest in the dark, holding hands, until he found us glow-worms; and he took us tromping through the forest in search of an armadillo, which we all got a good look at. Christian and Rolf will set you up with tours on your arrival--no need to arrange them in advance. Definitely go into the reserves with a guide--you won't see anything if you don't.

Room Tip: The cabin is fantastic--very private. Well worth it, even if, like us, there are just two of you.

I had no idea what to expect in Sta. Elena or from Rainbow Valley Lodge but what we found was a great experience. After several weeks of outstanding service in Costa Rica, Rolf and Christian at Rainbow Valley Lodge took it to a whole new level. The rooms were clean, simple, private, and with a great morning view. The hotel ownership and management were honest, helpful, and always available.

If you're bound for one of Costa Rica's natural treasures, the cloud forests around Monteverde and want to feel like at home, this is the place to stay. Rolf, Christian and his wife will give you all the information you need to get around in the village of Santa Elena and the rooms may not be huge, but the view will take your breath away.
Everything you need to cook a quick breakfast is there in the small kitchen corner, the ingredients can be found in the supermarket nearby.
A curious Coati (Raccoon) might greet you with a circus show in the tree near your window,
We loved the place!

Stayed in cabin for two nights. Bed was comfortable and access to kitchenette was a nice bonus. Great value for the price. Christian the host was helpful and informative about local attractions. He also works as a local guide. Morning visits by a pair of coatis was cute at first but quickly became annoying when trying to eat outside. Would go back again!

We had a short 3 night stay (too short) at Rainbow Valley Lodge. We were glad we found it. After staying near town on an earlier trip we found Rainbow Lodge to be much more peaceful and quiet than town.

We could walk to town quickly or take an inexpensive cab which would show up I would say within 5 minutes max.

The young man Christian and his wife were way helpful in calling cabs and making sure everything was Ok for us. He gave us great local info and helped us arrange some local tours. Rolf helped us by email with transport and general questions. He got us a shuttle for a few dollars less than the other passengers had paid also.

There was a lot to do in Monteverde. More so than during our last visit 4 years ago. Tip: visit Curi Canha reserve which is new and wonderful!!

Our room was wonderful with a great view of mountains and we had daily visits from a pair of Coatis and we saw a toucan and some mot mots also. The new internet they installed in the rooms worked really well.

Rolf also organized a horseback riding tour with Horse Trek Monteverde which was one of our highlights of our trip to Monteverde!

Overall a great stay and we would highly recommend Rainbow Valley Lodge

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at rainbow valley lodge. Christian and Rolf treated us like family, making sure our stay was extremely enjoyable, booking trips for us and finding us the best deals, and recommending restaurants and activities. We stayed in Room 1, the double bed room with a small kitchenette and view of the forest and part of the cloud forest. It was a gorgeous room, clean and comfortable, with warm water and an amazing view to wake up to. Monkeys and other animals can be viewed on the property. Christian set up several excursions for us, including the canopy tour, night hike, Monteverde cloud forest reserve hike and hummingbird gardens, and bungee jumping. We were even fortunate enough to see Santa Elena's Christmas parade, complete with drummers, dancers, fireworks, and of course Santa. Would highly recommend this lodge for the fantastic service, great recommendations, and proximity to town without hearing the noise from the main town. Would love to return!
