“Superb place to stay”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

Three co-workers and I stayed here while visiting Normandy ahead of a conference in Paris. It was the week of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and Le Grand Hard was able to accommodate us even though we booked fairly late.

This place is fantastic. The owners are a lovely couple from the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, and they speak several languages (English, French, and Dutch for sure, and I think also some German). They are very friendly and take time to talk to each guest. This place is located a few kilometers outside Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, between the village center and Utah Beach. It is probably too far to walk to either the village center or Utah Beach except for the most intrepid people, but it is easily done by bicycle (although it is a little hilly). Happily, Le Grand Hard rents bicycles. Additionally, it is very close to Sainte-Mere-Eglise. The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring the western end of the D-Day sites.

The hotel itself is a beautiful country manor with the buildings arranged around a central courtyard. The rooms are simple and in the style of the manor, so if you are looking for an ultra-modern room with lots of amenities, this is not the place for you. I don't think my room even had a TV, which was fine because I wasn't there to watch TV. Enjoying a few beers outside at a courtyard table, and then having a fine meal in the restaurant, were the best parts of the experience. Being away from the village center, it is exceptionally quiet, so you will enjoy a good night's sleep.

If and when I am in the area again, I will stay here again without question.

Room Tip: One co-worker and I stayed in rooms above the main office (south end of the property, as you come in...

We chose this hotel for a short trip to Normandy and we based our choice mostly on the previous reviews however it was a bit of a disappointment. There were definitely some very good bits but overall it was just SO SO.
First the good bits, the hosts are very pleasant and speak several languages, the location is away from everything else and provided a superb quiet night. The buildings themselves are exactly as described an old farm house with a refurbished barn.
The house is huge and has wooden floors but night noise is minimal and did not disturb our sleep, I suspect the barn accommodation is better but it is closer to the restaurant so may have some noise. The rooms in general are very big and have good décor, not modern, but with suitable pictures etc. The bathrooms are also quite big in general and vast in the old house, water was hot and plentiful for a bath or long shower.
The restaurant gets much praise and seems to draw outside visitors. The price is competitive at € 24 per person for a set meal. If you upgrade to half board the breakfast is proportionately cheaper. There is horse riding as part of the hotel complex if you want that sort of thing and of course it is only 3km from Utah beach if WW2 is your reason to visit. The free wi-fi is very strong in the house.

Now the not so good, The shower in our room leaked water all over the floor as the door had dropped and made a gap near the wall, we used all the bath mats and the towels to mop up, the maid never noticed this despite leaving the towels on the floor and we had the same towels for our whole stay, just hung up. The weather was not hot so they stayed damp all the time.
The maid never 'made' the bed just pulled the duvet up, even left the pillows in disarray.
There are no tea or coffee making things in the rooms so you are reliant on the restaurant/bar if you want a cup, not practical at midnight or 7am.
The breakfast is very expensive compared with any other hotels in the area € 15.00 against 5.50 - 7.50 commonly. Sure you can have as much as you like but croissants and bread fill you up at next to no cost. The staff at breakfast are quite indifferent and you have to ask for anything not put out.
The TV in the room only has two English speaking channels both News (Euro & CNN).
Another point which was annoying was the Booking.com 'deal'. This is down to both the hotel and the web site but we bought a 'value deal' which is put there by the hotel however there was no 'deal' just the normal room charges. This is misleading and sours the experience somewhat.
Overall this place works out on the expensive side of average for the area and we think you can do much better. Come to the restaurant for a meal one evening.

In the beginning of August, my mother, father, 2 brothers and I all traveled to the Normandy Beaches. My father picked out the spot, and I didn't have any worries because he picks very nice B&B feel hotels. This one was close to my favorite places to stay. Plenty of room, no noise, and most of all, a wonderful meal. The local beef was full of taste and the chocolate moose was extremely rich. The table is set up outside of your room, and that was extremely helpful to quickly run into your room to grab a coat if it gets cold. We woke up to a breakfast with many foods to choose from. The croissants were wonderful. We had to leave for our next destination quickly, but I would have been completely content with staying longer! (14-year-old point of view)

A nice stop over when I'm with a group visiting Utah beach landing sites
The food is great in a beautiful surrounding
The waiter could be more attentive as you need to ask him to bring you bread, butter and/or mustard!

Nevertheless a place I recommend

Le Grand Hard is a lovely hotel with friendly staff and a great restaurant with a relaxed approach. Our apartment was clean and comfortable and the terrace outside the door was great. Food in the restaurant is excellent, and the staff are all very chilled. I will return again.

My husband and I stayed here with our 14 year old son on a recent trip to visit the D-Day beaches. The Inn is situated in a beautiful spot very near Utah Beach. We arrived later than expected, at 9:45pm but the chef prepared us a quick dinner of delicious spaghetti Bolognese anyway. Our room was spacious with a large bathroom with separate shower and soaking tub. On recommendations from the Inn, we had a wonderful time touring the area each day after breakfast at the Inn and returned in the evening for exceptional food again for dinner. The food is so superior to what you might expect at a small inn not only in taste but also in presentation. The dining room is casual but the food is first class. Our waiter made wine recommendations each evening which also enhanced our experience. Everyone was very friendly and spoke fluent English. It was very family friendly but also could lend itself to a romantic getaway. For those who enjoy horseback riding, Le Grand Hard also has a stable with an indoor arena. Also a fitness area and yoga room and bicycles available. We hope to return with all of our children soon. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Found Le Grand Hard whilst researching a trip,to Normandy to visit D-Day beaches etc. We are so glad that we found this gem of an hotel. From the moment we drove up the short driveway we were happy with our choice of hotel and location. We were greeted with a friendly smile and made to feel at home. We were also given some fantastic suggestions on routes to follow and sites to see for each of our 2 full days in Normandy.
When we were shown to our room,we'll what can I say, the view was over the courtyard, the room was huge and had a huge ensuite bathroom (we had paid the extra and chosen a deluxe room). Whilst we were pleased with our initial impressions of our room and the hotel itself, the best was to come over the next 3 evenings.
The staff in the restaurant were extremely helpful and as with everyone else at the hotel spoke fluent English (at least I did not have to make them suffer my very bad French). The food in the restaurant was fantastic. It was hot, well presented and the flavours were mouth watering. The chef exceeded expectations every night. When we offered our compliments to the chef via the waiter, he invited us into the kitchen to tell the chef personally which we gladly did as the food was exceptional.
Sad to be leaving, but we will be back as this is a fantastic place to stay. Thank you all for making our short vacation to Normandy suc a pleasant one.
