“Very old fashioned, slightly odd hotel.”
Reviewed 29 October 2012

This hotel was originally an old priory, then a house and became a hotel after the war. In the 1950s a big dining room and many of the bedrooms were added on. Its a slightly odd hotchpotch of a place. Overall the hotel felt like it was in about 1980. The big plus point is an elevated view over the Loire with terraces where you can have a drink and look out over the river and birds swirling around below. There is a really nice pool in the grounds. The restaurant is extremely traditional, the second time only time ever as a lady I have been given a menu without prices in (I'll have the Lobster then?). A bit bizarre in 2012 perhaps. The service was very attentive, the food good but very rich. The bedroom was traditional and a bit stuffy feeling. The breakfast was a low point; I think they had decided to serve cooked food for the foreigners but don't really have their hearts set on it. Quite a bit of the hotel felt like it needed a bit more investment - gardens a bit unmanicured, etc. Overall, quite charming, quirky, but overall felt like someone needs to open the windows, dust it down and shake out of that time warp feeling. (A warning, Saumur itself is really boring.) If you are staying in the area this would be a good bet, I wouldn't choose this as a destination in itself.

We stayed at the Residences, not in the Chateau itself.
Pros: wonderful view (from the reception and bar/restaurant), very calm and peaceful, extremely spacious rooms (my 2 year old daughter had an annex to the room with her own hotel teddy bear and lamp).
Cons: very petit breakfast - we were entitled to one small croissant and one small pain au chocolat for breakfast, apart from juice and hot beverage, as we chose to have the express breakfast, and not the 21-euro buffet breakfast.
In general, very cosy, sympathetic and helpful staff.

we book the most expensive room from slh.com and everything is perfect, great view, perfct garden, staff, food all very nice! but we stay not in the main building( the big castle), but in a small building just opposite the big one. and next wall to us, is a very very large graveyard! I don't know maybe some of you don't care at all but we feel really bad to sleep just a wall next to the whole village's graves!

I wanted to thank you for your kind comments on trip advisor with regards to your recent stay. I’m really pleased to read that you had a very nice stay and you enjoyed to be in our Hotel, except the room located in the Old Chapel! Please note that the room you had is one of the largest.
For your next trip we will be very pleased to propose you another room located in the main building.

We do hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the Prieuré.

Kind regards

Le Prieure was a former monk priory. It was built hundreds of years ago. It is located on a hill overlooking the Loire River. The location was perfect. The hotel includes a main house, the church (which houses rooms) and some motel like rooms. Definitely stay in the main house. We had a good size room with a good sized bathroom. The room was larger than many European hotel rooms. It was decoraged tastefully. We had a view of the Loire River. Service was impeccable. The management staff was helpful, patient and knowledgeable. They made reservations for us at a tourist site we wanted to visit. They also provided information on wineries. More importantly, they were nice and patiently listened to all our questions. The grounds are large with a great open area and a pool. There is also an area outside the check in where you can sit and have cocktails. The hotel also contains a gourmet restaurant. On the negative, this hotel isn't for someone with walking limitations. There is no elevator and there are a lot of stairs. Also, food is expensive. The breakfast was $30/person. Dinner was evern higher. My recommendation is to stay at the hotel but eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: The rooms are all different. Some are in the main building and others are in the church or a motel l...

Restaurants where only the "patriarch" gets a menu with prices are rare (now and in days gone by.) The food was pricey, but exquisitely good, with much attention to artful presentation. As Americans, we're not well versed in Old School French. We had fun making the waiter chuckle, and marveling at practices we're not accustomed to. (Quietly, of course.) I saw someone complained about the breakfast room in another review, but we had our petit dejeuner in the lounge which has absolutely spectacular vistas over the Loire.

The main building hotel rooms are the only ones with wifi, and are also the most expensive. But you can come in the lounge to take care of any online business you must keep up on. The bathroom had a wonderful shower, our favorite of all our stops in France.

Room Tip: Depends what you want - and you pay accordingly.

The nicest of the 3 Grandes Etapes Françaises we stayed at. The views of the Loire were beautiful. The staff was great. the old world charm of the place was awsome. the dinner and the after diiner cheese cart was the best part!

Room Tip: ask to stay in the Main building with a view of the river

Delightful situation with helpful, very pleasant staff who spoke several languages. Will definitely return

However I would say that the set dinner was really rather too large for us so we only ate at the hotel once, but we did find some lovely places to eat in the neighbourhood.

The decoration in the 'bungalow' was a little tired but it was lovely to be able to sit outside on our private veranda and watch the sun set with a glass of wine!
