Aubagne is not on the main tourist trail, being about 30min from the coast, and not the sort of place you are tempted to stop at when you pass it on the motorway. But it has a hidden gem, les Aromes, nestled in the pedestrian-only old town center. Les Aromes is run by a couple. The chef used to work in a well known parisian restaurant but got fed up with the rat race, so they set up this loverly restaurant in Aubagne. SImple menu, 2 choices for starter, main and dessert. Menu changes every day depending what they find at the market and what takes their fancy. I had a salmon tartare with mangues, then an "echine de porc". The only "fausse note" was dessert, lightly cooker strawberries with ginger ice-cream, not a great mix in my opinion. Staff are very nice, and the place was full Tuesday lunchtime. Weekends you need to book ahead as people come out specially from Marseille for lunch.
