Hotel Vulcano Lindenhof
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Wittlich
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 August 2013

We stayed in the Vulcano hotel for 5 days in May 2013. Our stay was just great.

The hotel is situated 1 - 2 km from Wittlich. It is easy to find it and to get there by foot or by car. There is a huge free car parking alongside with the hotel. In general everything was perfect in the hotel. Very friendly and nice staff, at the reception, restaurant and cleaning ladies. The receptionists were at hand, always ready and willing to provide any information and replying to our questions any time we asked. At our request we got a room at the top of the hotel with amazing view of Wittlich town and of nice landscape around.

Everyday we were hiking around Wittlich, we were probably first turists in Spring in the forests around, as all day long we meet nobody there ?! Anyway, we enjoyed our walks very much following turists` paths we found on map we got in the Information office in the centre of Wittlich. We also went on short walks around the hotel.

Our stay was fantastic, relaxing and sportive. We certainly will come back in the future.

The hotel is very modern but has the feel of a ski chalet about it. The rooms were basic but clean and warm - essential in February. They did have a slightly 'musty smell' , probably due to lack of use in the off season. Each one has a balcony with views across the valley. The indoor pool is small but looked very nice - sadly didn't have time to use it. There is an outdoor pool and bbq area (covered in snow when we were there) but looks like it would be great in summer.

We ate dinner in the restaurant and the menu choice was great for meat lovers. The quality of food was good and the staff were friendly. We were laughing about my bad German. Do make the effort to speak German as it is much appreciated.

PREFACE AND WARNING:
I was present at the very same period as the bloke below that wrote the awfully bad review. We were only 11 people to celebrate Christmas evening in this hotel and I am afraid the frustrated old man that wrote the review below has serious problems.

OUR VISIT:
We had a great and warm welcome, and were greeted with an extensive explanation on the hotel and the spa. We had booked the slightly larger room as we were with a kid and this was just like a big apartment. Nice warm temperature, fake fireplace, flatscreen, perfect working wifi, free for all three devices we brought.
The spa was almost private, switched on on demand. If somebody below says a steambath is too hot, how can this be possible, steam is steam, normally at 100 degrees. maybe old people from West-Vlaanderen don't know that... The steam bath was perfect, as was the small but cosy 4 persons sauna. pool was perfect, also temperature around 30 degrees.
Menu food was fantastic, I commented the chef he should own a star for what he did on Christmas eve, great presentation, good quantities, and super friendly waiters and waitresses.
Next two days we had a buffet, with abundant choices, plenty of food and choice, not the same fine stuff as on Christmas eve but normal with buffets.
House keeping was perfect, clean and discrete. Planned forest walk was cancelled due to bad weather, we went on our own and they were right to cancel, as it was really dangerous for the other old people at the hotel. The drink and pastries were fine.
During lunchtime the restaurant was intensively visited by locals for Christmas celebration. They managed to do this fine with a limited staff, understandable regarding the low booking rate of the hotel (only 11 people)
Breakfast was fine, changing staff all the time but all so friendly.
On Christmas eve everything closed at 21:00 but we were welcomed at our room by a huge bottle of quality sekt and fresh pastries and chocolates, too much to eat.
Please disregard the review below, these old people must have been completely frustrated because of the rain. the hotel is really good, and all servants, cooks and reception people are doing their very best to get things ok. they do not deserve this. It is a great place with good quality for money. I would overall rate it 9/10.

Reception : This hotel was our 5th choice as the rest that we saw from Jetair brochure were all fully booked. On 24th Dec, the weather was bad to drive up from Belgium to the hotel. We called the hotel to inform them that we might be late and if we'd get any dinner upon arrival. The receptionist told us that we had to arrive on time at 6pm as that's when dinner would be served. If we arrived at 8pm or later, we would not be served any dinner. This was pretty absurb as we couldn't control mother nature and the way to Germany was dangerous and slippery. When we arrived at 5.45pm, we were not even given the chance to rest and take a shower. We were told by the recptionist that dinner would be served puctunally ay 6pm. We just dropped our luggages and rushed to the hotel. We booked the apartment and it was dark, cold and slippery. No one from the hotel even bothered to show us the way, just showed us the map which was confusing for us. To our disappointment, we saw pple arriving at 7pm to the restaurant. We really felt deceived by the hotel, with no compassion at all for their hotel guests who drove from Belgium to Germany (300km) and in that kind of weather.

Facilities : Swimming pool was too cold, steam bath was too hot and there's no massage on the spot. We had to order and not sure if the masseur would come.

Information : As part of the X'mas arrangement we booked, we were supposed to have a guided walk, gluhwein and cake after. There's no information at all on anything. Not even when the dinner would be served on X'mas day, etc.

Food : Food was simple and not bad but not festive enough. The owner of the hotel was not there on X'mas eve or X'mas day to welcome the guests.

Atmosphere : The atmosphere at the hotel, reception and bar was very cold. More a business hotel than a hotel for pple to be there to relax and enjoy. There was no activity after 9pm. Everyone is expected to go back to their room.

Service : When we checked out, we were told that we had to pay Euro14.50 for drinks we consumed on 26th Dec when we had settled everything by cash with the restaurant each day. The receptionist was so rude and didn't even apologise for the mistake and was unhappy when we refused to pay. In short, this is not a hotel we would recommend to families especially in the winter period. Some other hotel guests and us do not find that this hotel deserves a 4 star.
