Ideal Hotel Apartments
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We should have submitted a review before now but better late than never. My wife Julie and I stayed in a first-floor apartment towards the back of the hotel at a time when the weather was a little bit iffy. The no-frills rooms were fine, no problems at all, spacious and clean. When we go on holiday we don't expect luxury so this apartment was ideal.
We were well looked after by Maria and the rest of the family/staff. She provided a service well above that which would have been acceptable. One example was that she discovered that I am vegetarian and one day cooked a special vegetarian meal that wasn't on the restaurant menu for me. This included lovely fresh vegetables from the garden next to the hotel. So much of the food was grown in that garden, so fresh and tasty.
Because of the temperatures when we were there we didn't need the air-conditioning - in fact the sun didn't really heat our rooms up very much and the nights were cool.
Kokini Hani itself has suffered from the recession and problems with the Euro and there are a few empty holiday properties. The main road dominates the resort but if you are mobile and can get around you can find some very good places to eat away from the main drag. The beaches are of different sorts so you can choose what suits you best, again if you are prepared to walk a little. Most of the time we were there the winds and sea movements made swimming uninviting, although some more hardy souls weren't deterred. If you don't fancy the beach then the hotel swimming pool is very clean with about 15-20 loungers and a bar around it.
The buses stop just up the road from the apartments and run regularly along the coastal road to Hersonnisos, Malia and beyond in the east and Heraklion (for Knossos) in the west.
We would recommend the Ideal to anyone who wanted to spend their holiday in Kokkini Hani.

Having just returned from the Ideal Hotel Apartments I feel compelled to write a real review,
We researched these apartments from Trip Advisor having first of all booked for Elounda area. We decided to change to Ideal due to better reviews for the Ideal Apartments but only due to the area!
Having arrived at Heraklion Airport we were escorted onto our coach, told we would be driven to the relevant apartment/hotel by the driver and then dumped on the roadside with no rep and left to make our own way into the hotel. As for the warm friendly greeting mmm.
The Ideal Apartments are basic 2 star apartments that are clean and as expected for a cheap holiday. The food is very good especially the pizzas.however the menu is basic. The pool is small and shallow, so please don't dive in! We were in a basement apartment and had nothing to look out on except legs however we felt everyone could look in! There was no privacy and we needed to keep curtains closed at all times, although it was cooler as people above ground found it extremely hot and the air con was an extra charge. The beds were uncomfortable and we only had one pillow which was flat. The bed linen and towels were changed every other day and were spotlessly clean. The equipment was very basic however as I refuse to cook on holiday this didn't cause me any problems.
At the end of the holiday we could not keep our room and neither could anyone else due to being fully booked. We were all turfed out at 12 noon and although we could leave our cases in reception there was no complementary room to change later, The customer toilets had a shower within them which was small and lacked any locks. there were two of these of which one was out of order.. They were awful!! Water sprayed everywhere soaking the floor so it was impossible to get dry or keep your clothes dry whilst trying to hold the door in case anyone tried to come in. My husband ended up showering at the pool area. I had to dry my hair in the hotel reception and put makeup on at the poolside. It was very very basic. This day and age I don't think this is acceptable. The staff were pleasant enough.
Kokini Hani itself is dilapidated. The recession and introduction of all inclusive has reduced the place to a ghost town. There is one single main road with supermarkets and shops but very few restaurants in fact there seemed to be only three as we could find within walking distance one of them being the Ideal therefore it was busy at times. The beach is clean and safe for swimming and the sunbeds were 5 Euros for two and a brolly. It was a short 5 minute walk across the road.
If you have young children care is needed as the road at the front of the property is rather fast.
There is some aircraft noise due to the close proximity to the airport. This seems to come in waves and can be during the night too, however we enjoyed watching them coming in to land.
I would highly recommend hiring a car as there are some lovely places to explore up in the mountains and although the roads are busy they are quite easy to negotiate. The buses stopped just outside the apartments and run fairly regularly to Aghios Nikolas, Malia and Heraklion..
If I were to return to Crete again I would choose Elounda it is a nicer setting.

Room Tip: The basement rooms are cooler. I would ask for rooms away from the bar although there is no loud...

Stayed in these apartments for 2 weeks in mid July. They are clean and the sheets, towels were changed every 2 days. We had a lovely balcony with a view over the gardens which are very pretty and well maintained. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming on our arrival. However, as we are a bit adventurous and like to see as much as possible of the places we visit, we tended to either cook for ourselves or eat out and we were on a bit of a budget, hence the self catering apartment. So, as the weeks went on we did feel guilty about not eating at the hotel and the staff seemed to be less friendly because of this. Apart from that it is the most relaxing place to stay. If you have small children however there is not a lot to do and the lack of a microwave and toaster may be a bit of a concern..........the 1st self catering place we have stayed in that lacked a microwave! The pool is not big but beatifully clean and is in a great little sun trap. There is also a poolside bar where you can buy drinks and snacks It is a beautiful place to stay, with amenities ie supermarket/bakery etc. just a few paces away. The beach is fabulous and only 5 mins walk. There is an excellent bus service just outside the hotel to the more lively Hersonissos, which has lovely restaraunts, bars and shops. For the younger ones amongst you there are also quite a few clubs. The capital Heraklion is also lively and has a beatiful harbour. Would I return? Yes!!

Room Tip: We like to be away from the pool area so requested this before arrival

We've just returned from 7 nights at the Ideal and I have to say that we were very impressed!!
We usually have a two week break in November when we splurge and do long haul, but every now and again we book a cheap one week break in Europe..

We booked this on line at a bargain price, including flights and transfers and even though I'd done my homework on TA, I wasn't expecting such a superb break....

As we arrived, George bounded out, grabbed our cases and took us to reception where we were checked in within minutes and then he carried the cases to our room, bade us a good holiday and wouldn't accept a tip......

Must admit that I was a bit disappointed for a few mins as I'd emailed a couple of weeks before and asked for a high room with a garden view (as recommended by some on here).. what we had was a ground floor room, but this actually was better since as we later found out, the sun rises very early and the higher rooms at the back get hot early... in comparison, ours was sheltered from early heat and we were able to enjoy our morning tea on our balcony (courtyard) very comfortably....

Two large rooms, one double bedroom, with wall mounted TV - aeriel cable supplied on request (we don't watch TV on holiday) the other a twin bedded room with a table, chairs and kitchen area....

Kettle, two rings, fridge and a brief inspection showed all crockery/pans/utensils that you'd need for S/C.....and all clean..

Bathroom with shower (fantastic power), loo and basin... again, all that you needed...

Some objectors to the ground floor rooms have made a point about the window in the shower being alongside the side walkway and that people could see in... HAHA!! - they'd either have to be lilliputian in size or down on their hands and knees...!

Safe in bedroom wardrobe (pay for) and A/C to be paid, but we actually found that we didn't need it (possibly because of the low room?)

The rooms were well maintained, clean, and serviced well.. clean towels/sheets every other day...

We normally like to spend holidays alternating between the beach and the pool, but we actually didn't like the beach much so it was a week by the pool for us....

AND what a week!

Despite the hotel being full, there was no scramble for sunbeds, no towels out at "silly o'clock"
It was civilised and there was plenty of room every day at all times...

We loved the pool, with it's section for kiddies and the main pool was a good size and depth and at a great temperature!!

The atmosphere was great, everyone seemed to be having a chill...

The only (minor) downside was that on a couple of days there is some sort of class that goes on in one of the ground floor rooms alongside the pool... the "teacher" had a very commanding voice and it was a bit irritating if you were outside the windows... but it finished at lunchtime...

Public areas and toilets spotless!!

Entertainment - well it was the world Cup and the large screen drew big crowds - I hope that they have something now it's over - if only, say some Greek dancing displays, or (dreaded word!) Karaoke...

As for the Cats, well, personally I can't stand them, but they weren't obtrusive, if you don't feed them, then they get the message and won't sit there miaowing at you for very long..AND there wasn't any cat "mess" that I could see...

Last, but in no ways least, I have to mention the family.....so helpful and pleasant and what drives the ethos of the Ideal...Maria leads by example, the head cook but when she's not in the kitchen you'll see (and hear) her either round the pool chatting to guests, or supervising the garden area - where they grow melons and olives and other stuff that she cooks with..

One morning there were a group of students on at teaching session in the gardens and they came back to the pool bar... Maria promptly went to the garden, picked a watermelon, cut it up and gave each of the students a piece before bringing slices around for everyone around the pool!! - Absolutely the freshest and juciest watermelon that I've ever tasted!!

George, front of house in the afternoon and evening - great company and very helpful (back to that later)

Pandelis - he was looking after the pool bar when we were there... I loved our lunchtime chats after a few beers - He's off travelling at the end of the season and , mate, you've got my addy!!

Panos - thanks for all the great lunchtime service!

Well, that's about it..

Was there a downside? - well, yes, but it wasn't the Ideal that caused it - in fact they were our "saviours"... up to the afternoon of the day before our departure there was no notice of our flight home or pick-up time ..I found the rep on his afternoon visit and enquired... he said that he'd be back later in the day and would post the info...

By 1900 there was still no sign and so George tried to phone the rep (landline and mobile) - no answer...

George advised that taking our flight time into account (early morning) that we should be outside the hotel at 0645 and that if the bus hadn't arrived by 0700 (when the maid arrived for work) that we should tell her to knock on his door and HE would drive us to the airport!!!

Actually, the bus arrived at 0705 (still no info on the board) and George's lie-in was safe!! - but what an offer!!
- Typical of the family ethos of great service to their guests!!

Some folks return here year on year and we can see why.... we would , without doubt!!

Any questions, as ever, PM me..

Ok so it's mine and my husbands first time going self catering, we booked last minute for it and got a cheap deal, we arrived in Crete (our 2nd visit to the island) with no expectations.
When we first arrived we were a little unsure what to expect with the restaurant out the front on the main road, however we got taken to our room, a quite room. It was huge! Basic but spotless and all we needed! .. This room was cleaned 3-4 times during our week stay.
A few little points to take into account you have to pay for air-con 7euros per night. We paid for 6 nights but could have got away with paying night by night as we got climatised by night 3 and hardly used it. there also is no toaster.. only a hob so found it a little difficult to buy food to make ourselfs. (But we made do).
We had a mix of our own cooked food brought locally & at the hotel restaurant. The food is amazing in the hotel restaurant! Especially the pizza!!!! The food at the supermarkets proberly wasn't as cheap as we had hoped so ended up spending more money than we anticipated! But never Mind!
The hotel pool is great! It's a brilliant size and during the day very often we were the only 1s in the pool, it was perfect, very relaxing.
The staff at the hotel are ace! Very welcoming & chatty! It's a very traditional hotel they make u feel like family!!
The location couldn't be better the beach is about 1 min walk over the road... the nearest shop is next door and turning left or right out the hotel u have shops, supermarkets alsorts! There is also a bus stop around 15m up the rd (turn right out of hotel) which we got to analipsi beach - where we got married last year. This 15 min bus ride cost us around 3euros! U can go right along the island on this bus it's very cheap.
To the views about animals, if You don't like animals simply don't visit Greece/ Crete there are a lot of stray animals.. We saw a few around the hotel, nice cats, 1 had even recently had kittens!! hopefully people will keep giving them water and some food when we leave! they don't allow them in the restaurant and we didn't once see any in the eating areas. I would defiantly return here if we choose to go self catering again!
This hotel should be 4*!
Poppie and mark! x

We were on family vacation with 3 small children under the age of 6. This hotel suited us perfectly! The rooms and the swimming pool were clean, the beach and the shops were just few minutes away. The best part was that the family who owned the hotel were very freindly and they did their utmost to make our stay as good as possible. I strongly recomend this place to families with small children. The restaurant served good food, and "Mamma" Maria made the best, healthy homemade food for our youngest. We loved our stay there, and consider comming back.

Firstly i must say this hotel is spotless the food is great and all the staff are so helpful.A few things that got on my nerves fristly people feeding the stray cats in the restaurant this lead to them coming around when you had a meal. The next thing was i went to this hotel as it said there was entertainment well 13 nights of football is not what i call entertainment .Apparently this is the usual thing not just for the world cup. Pretty boring every night. Resort is getting a bit run . down due to all inclusive .Beware of the main road in the evening its like a race track. But as i said staff great thanks to tony he is abit of a joker

Room Tip: rooms at the back sunny in the morning cool in the afternoon
