“Like the trouble free vacations of your childhood ”
Reviewed 7 December 2013 via mobile

Staying at the Elman can be quite N experience if you do not know what to expect. This is a cult 1970s hotel located at the best beach in South West Crete. Truth is, there is no one to carry your luggage and the hotel looks like a block of flats. But you get accustomed to this strange hotel and there is a family atmosphere which builds into you. Strangely, it reminded me of the Adams family series : there is this fat and lazy dog Paulina that you have to jump before you arrive in front of the equally overweight receptionist Mrs Marina. Overweight is also the rest of the staff (probably from the ex Soviet countries) including the owners. The furniture is as if coming from the 1970s and so is the decoration. But who cares? This is a hotel to get lost in time and experience the trouble free vacations of your childhood. There is not much to do in Paleochora but if you like swimming and have some good books, you will be fine. In fact, there are do many crystal clear water beaches all the way to Krios that no one can complain. As to the water temperature it is ideal : around 24 to 25 degrees Celsius.
There is also a beach bar next to the hotel (30 meters away) which is quite handy.
The sea in front of the hotel ("Pahia Ammos": thick sand) is very good albeit quite windy.

We stayed in Hotel Elman for 6 days and got very good service. The hotel is situated on the beach, which is very practial as Paleochoras beach is where families stay whilst in town.
The rooms are so enormous that you actually can get lost in them :o) No disturbing noise at night from the road. We therefore slept well. The beds were good. What our familiy really appreciated about the hotel though, was the breakfast buffets. They are overwhelming. Homemade Greek food of all sorts. The garden and the trees in front of the hotel offer nice shadowy resting opportunities should the sun take its toll during a day on the beach.

Room Tip: Go for the big rooms at little extra cost. They are worth it :o)

The 3 star Hotel Elman catches your eye as you drive into Paleochora. The flapping flags and white painted entrance look quite inviting… and the long marble entrance, leading to the tidy reception area continues the theme, after you step over the gap and the lazy, slightly overweight hotel dog. The elderly management is very polite and pleasant – keen to point out the very extravagant, inclusive breakfast buffet, which offers everything from scrambled egg and bacon to ice cream through a range of very fattening (but deliciously tasty!) cakes. The setting is rather like a wedding reception… with big bronze coloured bows around the chairs. Paleochora is very popular with Austrian tour groups and the Elman is clearly geared towards them, with a Germanic rather than Greek feel, both in the decor and catering. We three weary travellers arrived at dusk and were shown to the air conditioned ground floor apartment (100 euros a night) which was nice enough, but strangely 1970s DIY in decoration and furnishing with a very 21st century marble floor throughout. The GREEN 70s bathroom suite had no shower but a hand-held hose instead, which was a little disappointing. We stepped out on to our patio facing the beach, tantalisingly… but alas couldn't cross over the wall and gap – so we had to go back through the hotel to go around the side to access the beach. There is no pool, but as the beach is pretty close that is not a major issue. And there is no bar, unfortunately. Altogether pleasant enough but a little gloomy… and not particularly Greek! Good location on the beach.

If you are not a bit of a romantic, opt for another hotel. We felt like we were in a MadMen episode staying at the Elman - it serves as proof that good things last. it may be old, but you can see the consistent effort that is made to keep it up and it is definitetely one of the CLEANEST I have stayed in. It is on the beach, has internet, and provides a plethora of spaces on its grounds to sit and enjoy. The breakfast is quirky and fun and you never know what you will get - shrimp today? They are lovely, warm, accommodating and something just keeps us going back for more! A Classic.

Room Tip: Very welcoming to children and very safe grounds for them

We were treated like dogs by the receptionist at the Elman hotel. There had been a misunderstanding with the dates, I grant that, but she just kept yelling at us like a madwoman. ELMAN HOTEL AT PALEOCHORA?? NEVER AGAIN!!
