“Excellent apartments for your holiday at Stalis”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Just returned from another stunning holiday in Crete staying at Irilena Apartments run by Irini and her mum. We wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Unlike a lot of apartments, Irilena is situated a few minutes walk from the beach and just a couple of minutes from the nearest Supermarket and Tavernas.

Irini, although always busy is an amazing host and is always keen to help with hints on what to see, where to go, what to eat and so on.

The apartments and studios are light and airy, cleaned every few days. Air conditioning is available as are room safes.

The pool is superb going from 1m to 2m. There are plenty of sunbeds but the sea is only a few minutes walk away with all sorts of aqua sports or you can just lay in the sun and have beer or any other drink bought to your sun lounger.

The Irilena pool bar serves a variety of snacks and you can always be sure of an interesting cocktail or two. There is free wifi in the pool area.

Stalis itself is full of shops and places to eat and drink. If you want to experience Cretan hospitality at its best then I recommend Irilena Apartments.

We will be back next year!

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Stalis Crete where we stayed at the Irilena Studios / Apartments. The complex is situated approx 100 yards off the main road into Stalis and approx 400 yards from the beach, bars and restaurants off the main resort road.

We have travelled to so many Greek Islands over the last 20 years it's fair to claim that we have a great deal of experience to compare the "Irilena" with, however this year for the very first time on arrival we found that our 1 bedroom apartment had been "double" booked and was not available to us. We were offered a studio which in fairness was very nice, but not what we had booked and paid for, and it was disappointing that the owners could not tell us either if or when an apartment would be available. We booked through an internet based holiday company in the UK and after contacting them we were provided with our correct accomodation on the third day of our holiday. That experience will make this review difficult however, as always, I will endeavour to make it a fair one.

Overall the studios and apartments whilst "Basic" (experienced visitors to Greece will understand what that means) offer, in our experience, fantastic value for money. If your expectations are to have either a kettle or toaster then the Irilena is not for you. However if you want clean and well presented accomodation at fantastic value for money then look no further.

There is a nice pool area where you can enjoy a nice swim and where sunbeds are available free of charge, there is also a snack bar adjacent to the pool which although small does offer a variety of snacks and drinks through the day.

Free WiFi is available, but not in your room, and the funiest sight most days are people rushing to the snack bar the try and get a connection which in fairness is decent and reasonably quick around the pool area.

The pool area, like many other areas in Greece, is also available to people from other nearby apartments, so at times it can get busy but overall not so busy that you can'tenjoy the pool.

There are both air conditioning and a safe in each room available at an extra cost, about 40 euros for AC and 10 euros a week for the safe. However each room are fitted with both double glazed windows and shutters so it is possible to leave the windows open with the shutters closed a night to help cool the rooms. As regards the safe it's clear there are no security issues at the Irilena so you need hire the safe only for your own piece of mind.

The Irilena is very well placed for easy access to the bars, tavernas and restaurants of Stlais with most only a 5 minute or so walk away.

The most positive thing about the Irilena, in our opinion, is the owner Irena who is a charming and extremely hardworking young lady who wants only to make sure that everything is OK with your holiday.

One evening just before we were going out we lost all water pressure in our apartment and whilst leaving we bumped into Irena and told her, this was about 8pm and she promised to look into it straight away. When we returned at about 11.30pm she was still there, with a plumber, and assured us the water would be back on within 30 minutes, and it was.

The problem was caused by a group of Russians who had damaged the shower unit in thier room, causing a flood and then gone out on the razz leaving chaos behind them. Irena just dealt with it and that's her, the customer always comes first.

Things weren't perfect for us but this was far from the worst holiday we have experienced and overall we would have no hesitation in booking another holiday at the Irilena apartments.

Thank you Irena and your lovely mother Anna for working so hard to make our stay an enjoyable one overall.

Just returned from a weeks self catering here. The family that run the hotel are fantastic - couldn't be more accommodating and are ever so friendly. They allowed us to leave our cases in reception on our departure date, and confirmed our coach transfers, which was a load off of our minds for our return journey.

The studios are large, clean, airy and bright. Although there were no mattress protectors or pillow protectors on the beds, the sheets and towels provided were clean and fresh. There was a safe installed in the room, but we didn't feel the need to use it as the hotel felt so safe and secure.

The room has a full sized under the counter fridge, a sink and a 2 ring electric hot plate. I would advise you bring a travel kettle if you want home made cuppas, a can opener (although I'm sure you could borrow one from reception), a teatowel/dishcloth for the washing up, and a couple of clothes pegs for the airer on the balcony.

The pool and bar area has free Wifi and the food served is lovely. We had some tasty home made cake. The pool is clean with a number of sun loungers and umbrellas - we found there to be enough for everyone.

The hotels' water is heated by solar panels, so don't expect hot water first thing in your rooms.

There were numerous notices posted around by the hotel owners asking for people to show consideration when closing room doors, however, I was woken by the sound of crashing and banging noises on a couple of occasions, so if you're a light sleeper pack some earplugs. We stayed on English time which was probably out of sync with the others staying in the hotel.

There is a separate charge for aircon (40 euros for our weeks stay which was well worth it and advisable) and there is no lift (if you have any mobility issues, request a ground floor room)

The location was lovely - 2 restaurants that really stood out for us were the Kalina Mare and the Anatolia, both within a 5 minute walk. The bakery opposite the Hotel Akti (you can't miss it!) has the best apple doughnuts - 1euro 50 each.

There are a number of restaurants and cafes on the beach - we loved going to Cocos (5 mins walk to the left of the Aktia hotel as you face it) - and for 3 euros pp you could have a sunbed, umbrella and table for the whole day, and they threw in either a free small beer or soft drink each.

Watch out for the scooters and quadbikes - they're absolutely everywhere and can come pretty close when you're out and about.

The Happy Train at 10 euros pp is a nice day out. After driving through Malia, we decided to stay on the train, and instead we hopped off at Star Beach in Hersonissos - a massive, free resort which had a real family vibe with live poolside DJ's, watersports, play areas and bungee jumping. There's a lovely cafe as you enter. The mini train runs at regular 1 &1/2 hour intervals into the evening - but remember to hang onto your ticket to get back to Stalis again.

All in all, we loved Crete and would love to go again. The people are so kind, the atmosphere relaxed and the resort is extremely family friendly.Just wish we went before it hit the Euro as it was way too easy to get through our holiday spends!

Room Tip: We were very happy with our room facing towards the sea. Wifi not in the rooms but available around...

Returned to Stalis, 13th June 2014 14nts self catering, booked on line and stayed at the Irilena Apartments which is situated within an olive grove just off the main beach road and all the shops, bars, restaurants the nearest one is the Katrina restaurant family run and a really nice value for money place to visit which my friends and I did on a few occasions lovely food here.
So going back to the Irilena Apartments, a family run business and a very nice polite family too, the rooms are cleaned regularly as are the towels and bedding I'm pleased to say. there is a snack bar that also serves drinks hot or cold bottled beers, just off the pool area which is kept clean and tidy it is a smallish pool and serves it's purpose well, If you have any problems with your stay just tell them and they will do their best to make your stay a pleasant one. when you arrive your transfer coach will drop you off at the top of a pathway which leads you to the apartments you will be met by a member of staff who will take you to reception don't be put off by the pathway you will be welcomed. Each apartment has either a patio area or balcony, basic accommodation, but clean don't expect 5* FOR 2/3 STAR PRICES and enjoy your holiday.
Plenty to see and do on the beach road area the beach is approx 500 meters walk away from the Irilena Apartments and very nice and clean ..

Room Tip: Their are a variety of rooms just remember if you don't like say so you will be surprised. check...

The pool bar was fabulous and served lovely snacks and Irina made the most beautiful homemade strawberry lemonade! The pool area was lovely and quiet with lots of so loungers to choose from. The location was perfect just round he corner from the Stalis strip and the beach. Overall we had a lovely holiday and we would definitely book to come here again!

This is the second year me and my friends have been to Stalis and we wouldn't stay anywhere else!
Irilena and her Mum who own the apartments are lovely and they can never do enough for you.
The apartments are very central and two minutes away from the beautiful beach bars and restaurants.
The rooms were always tidy and very good maid service too.
Rooms also very spacious and ours overlooked the pool which is plenty big enough for these apartments and you never struggle to get a sunbed.
Also you have to make sure you try Irilenas homemade strawberry lemonade and biscuits they are great!
Definitely go to Themis Beach Bar whilst your there to see Sarah and her lovely cocktails and go to Kaliana Bar for drinks or food and meet Jan Luke and the rest of them...they make you feel so welcome.
There is also a restaurant at the end of the road which does mouth wateringly good food and a lovely curry thai and chinese down the road which also did amazing food.
Once you have been to Stalis and stayed in these apartments you wouldnt want to not go back.
Great people who always make you feel at home :)
xx

Room Tip: We asked for a pool view and we got it

Stayed here for two weeks with 7 people. The rooms were lovely, spacious and clean, and were cleaned every 2 days. If there was anything you needed you could go to irena and she would give you excellent advice. Location is perfect and right next to the stalis strip. Would definitely stay here again!
