“We had a great time”
Reviewed 22 August 2011

We had a great time in Stalis, even when we found out it's a pretty busy place. Matamy Beach is a fine apartment to stay in. We rented a 2 room apartment which was on the ground floor. The view was all but perfect (no view) and the mattrasses on the bed where extremely hard. Music in the bar was sometimes pretty loud until late, but that didn't really bother us. All in all it's a good place to stay, because it's clean and the service is great.

Arriving in the night is always daunting on a holiday, and we weren't sure what to expect. However, these apartments were fabulous, including all that was needed as a base during your holiday. Costas and Stella were so kind and always there to help, at any time! The apartments were slap bang in the middle of Stalis' main strip, with many, many restaurants to choose from either end, two beautiful beaches, the happy train station and much more! The room we were in fitted 4 people, two adults and two grown up kids, and whilst the apartments may have seemed quite basic, it was all that could be expected of self catering apartments - a great place to sleep and shower! It was a great help that our thomas cook rep (Laura) was an absolute superstar!! Thankyou Matamy Beach!!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a balcony/view or you may get a ground floor with not alot of outside space

My friend and I stayed at the Matamy Beach in July 2011 for a week and loved it! The hotel is ideally placed in the centre of Stalis yet there is no noise from the resort when you're in your room. Our room was a studio on the ground floor, didn't look like the photos on the website which was a little disappointing but it was a perfectly good room for the two of us, was very clean and all the kitchen equipment worked. The hotel is run by Costa and Stella (with help from their gorgeous little girls Eleni and Sophia!) who were so friendly and helpful, they made us feel really welcome and like nothing was too much trouble. The pool area isn't very big but there are sun loungers (free of charge) and we managed to get one every day without any problems, the beach is less than a five minute walk in either direction and sun loungers here range from 2-5 euros per day, some of them include lunch so look out for a bargain! If you want air conditioning in your room you do have to pay (7 euros per day) which adds quite a bit to your holiday if you're not expecting it (we weren't - should probably read the small print!); whilst we were there the temperature was high 30's to low 40's so air con was a definite must and we had to shell out for it...that would be my only criticism of the whole stay.

There are some snacks available at the bar but these are limited, however there is a pub immediately next door called the Rovers Return and this has a great snack menu, all the other bars and restaurants are also on the doorstep and Lambros which is a restaurant next door-but-one serves a wide range of delicious food and cocktails right on the sea front. Knossos which is opposite the hotel served the best meal we had all week and also one of the cheapest so I would definitely recommend this one. The best bar we found for evening entertainment was Dwyers which is an Irish bar and they do amazing cocktails and have live music every night. Themis was another really nice bar, again with a good food menu during the day and lovely cocktails!

As we booked it as a package holiday with Thomas Cook we did of course have a rep, her name was Laura and she was the most helpful rep I have ever met on holiday! She had great knowledge of everything to do with Crete, was at the hotel every day and came looking for you to check everything was OK, left a note for you if she couldn't find you just so you knew she'd been...I can't praise her enough for how helpful she was!

Overall I would definitely recommend the Matamy Beach to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday by the sea with basic but pleasant rooms, easy access to good bars and restaurants and a warm, friendly atmosphere - can't wait to go again!

My friend and I stayed at the Matamy very recently and completely loved it! Situated in the heart of Stalis, it is directly on the seafront, with it's own 'mini beach' directly in front of the apartments and larger beaches 50m either side.

The owners Costa and Stella couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming! The apartments are clean and well equipped and could only have been improved by an extra pillow and the air con being free! The pool is small, but very clean and the bar is stocked full of drinks, snacks and cocktails.

Rooms were cleaned everyday, but Sunday, with fresh bedding and towels and the rooms all have a balcony/terrace, many with sea views. Bathrooms have a bath and a shower.

The larger public beaches are chock full of loungers for around 5 Euros for two, with umbrella and are very close to many bars for lunch and drinks.

There are many bars and eateries in Stalis, yet it still manages to remain peaceful. If you want a livlier night, check out Malia, twenty minutes up the road.

Recommended eateries are The Rovers Return for a hangover busting brekkie, Lambros for fresh meat and fish, Knossos for the most AMAZING seafood spagetti ever, Themis bar for sandwiches and strawberry daquiris and Dwyer's Irish Bar for awesome two for 7 Euro's cocktails and live music!

Had a wonderful time, would go back tomorrow!

Having looked at the picture of the apartments in the Thomas Cook brochue, it appeared to look very nice from the outside. However we were very disappointed upon arrival. The reception was within the "Drunken Duck Bar" full of various football shirts hanging from the ceiling. Both the reception area and bar were very unclean and disorderly. When we were shown to our room we were shocked by the smell of stale smoke. There was only a single sheet on the bed with no bed linen, the beds also stank of smoke and made us itch. The kitchen area was only 3 foot from the bed! We only spent 3 hours at here before we complained along with others who had arrived at the same time as ourselves. We paid to be upgraded to a better standard of hotel. Kostas the owner does not like confronitation and believes his apartments are of the highest standard! Having stayed in many Greek resorts we fully appreciate what to expect from the accommodation-Matamy Beach had a marque of excellence in the brochure but cannot work out why?
