“Awesome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2012

My friends and I have just returned from a week's stay at Santa Catherina and we could not believe what a fantastic place this, and Samos, is. We experienced a warm and friendly welcome from Nelly and from there our holiday just got better and better. The reception to the hotel is stunning, clean and cool, and just beyond the balcony is the most amazing views imaginable! A fabulous hillscape with blue seas and Turkey just an arm's length away.
We were immediately shown to our room (23), again clean, and very spacious. Although not the most luxurious of accommodation, this is typical Greece and certainly met with expectations and with air con at only €5 a day and a safe at €10 a week, we had all we needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is equipped with everything you may need when self-catering and if food was required it could be purchased on site. In addition, George and his girls were more than willing to either take you to his tavern, bring the food to you or for a small charge, €3, take you in to Pythagoria. Drinks could be bought from the bar throughout the day and whilst there was not always someone right there, there was always someone close by to assist you as required.
The pool was clean and well maintained and there was always sunbeds available, the atmosphere was relaxed and just busy enough to create an atmosphere without being too loud. Sunbathing was a joy, the views alone were enough to keep you by the pool all day!
After eight hours sun, there was plenty to do by night, the stunning walk into town is downhill but very manageable. A path cuts thought the most difficult terrain and even those who find walking tricky would be able to manage much of the route. I would say get to the bottom of the path and on to the road before nightfall though as the short walk on the road can be a little hairy in the dark.
The vast number of tavernas in town were all incredible and we did not experience bad service or food in any of those that we tried, in fact, some of the best food that we have ever had was eaten on our holiday.
After dinner, and before cocktails, there are plenty of shops to keep you busy, especially jewellery shops which you can browse at your leisure without being hassled. At the end of your night there is time to grab a croissant from one of the 24/7 bakeries or pick up food for the next day. The mini-markets are open as late as you need them and taxis are freely available and will take you safely home for only €6.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful Santa Catherina and Samos is, from start to finish it was incredible and somewhere I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone wanting a quiet, beautiful taste of untainted Greece.

We (a group of 4 females) have just return from a fantastic week at these apartments. We were blown away by the views from the hotel and enjoyed many days sunbathing by the pool. Our apartment was spacious and clean and also had beautiful views from our balconys. We enjoyed the walk into town on an evening and George was on hand to give us lift if we needed. A tax back on an evening was reasonable for 6 euros. We are at George's restaurant on a couple of occasions. The foods was excellent and the restaurant was right next to the beach overlooking the sea which was wonderful! We were told by Thompsons that check out was 9 o'clock but after speaking to one of the ladies we didn't check out new until half 11. They were extremely helpful! A fantastic holiday and we would definitely return!

We have just come back from a weeks stay at this resort. Would like to say how pleased we are with George who was very helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. We were in room 22 and we had fantastic views of the harbour and sea. The room was big and very clean. We had a/c but wasn't essential as there was lovely sea breeze during the day and night. The two girls looking after the resort worked very hard and were always helpful. The resort was up a hill so you could benefit from hiring a car, otherwise a 6 euro taxi trip one way. George would take you to town at night time for a small charge or free if you use his restaurant. Lovely town and beach very pleasant. An amazing island, and would like to finish be saying thank you George for looking after us, from room 22.

We have just spent a week at these Apartments and agree with a lot of the comments already written. The Island of Samos is amazing and the views from our room (21) and from the Pool area were awesome! We too enjoyed the quietness and the ease of getting a sun bed by the Pool even at midday. Although the location is the positive it can also be the big negative if you didn't hire a car as the long windy road to me would have been very dangerous to walk, especially at night as it was pitch black. The rooms were very big, very basic but pretty well cleaned each day. Most of our plug sockets were hanging off the wall but trying to get a warm shower was almost impossible. First thing in the morning was your only chance as it was cold for the rest of the day and night, Serious! Totally agree with how hard the two girls worked otherwise this place would be a disaster. One final disappointment was our room check out time 9AM! Totally out of order for a 4 Star .
If you haven't already booked, my advice would be to come to Samos but stay at the Doryssa Seaside Resort, you won't be disappointed! Its lush.

We stayed at the Santa Catharina for 1 week in early August, this hotel has a 4 star rating and even Thompson give it 4 'T's. Now this hotel has apartments with a large kitchen/diner plus seperate bedroom and kitchen, a gym with sauna, a pool with ample loungers and shades and a lovely lobby. Four stars would probably have been well deserved when it was new but we felt that the owner, George, is fighting a losing battle with the law of entropy; anything left to it's own devices will break/rot/fall off etc. Lack of maintenance is what's letting this hotel down. The unfinished building mentioned in other reviews is a hotel that got stopped due to the Greek economic crisis, I wonder if this is the same reason for the maintenance problem? There was air con' in the bedroom only and this was an extra 5€ per day! There is also a good room safe for 10€ per week.
Everything in our apartment worked so we had no reason to have a run in with George, in fact our experience with him was very positive, he even spotted us walking back in the dark one night and gave us a lift back to the hotel. He was certainly more friendly than the majority of Londoners staying during our week! We did have ants getting though cracked tiles in the bathroom but this was sorted with some bug spray, the spray did not however have any effect the Londoners.
We had a middle level apartment over the pool and facing the sea so we got the stunning views mentioned in other reviews, I can see why some were unhappy with their room location as you could end up looking at a grass bank or the aforementioned unfinished building, room location could be a deal breaker here.
The hotel is located just under a mile up a steep and windy road off the main route into Pythagoria, we hired a car when we booked and if you like to explore I would recommend doing so if possible. With no car you can walk to the main town in about 25-30 minutes and a taxi back is 6€. If you eat in Georges Pythagoria restaurant you get a free lift into town at 7-7.30, if you don't eat there you still get a lift for 3€ per couple. This is the time the hotel staff, both of them, leave the hotel for the night, after this reception and the main building is closed for the night. Some reviewers saw this as an issue, we did not.
If you do hire a car there is a Lidle supermarket 3.5 miles down the main road going left at the end of the windy road, this is well worth a trip as food here is vastly cheaper than the many smaller supermarkets dotted around town. Having said that we only ate snacks in the apartment as we would eat out for main meals.
If you are the type that likes to tan all day you can plant yourself by that lovely pool with no worries about finding a lounger and fry away, you can even pop back to your hotel for food/drink or just buy some from the pool side bar, which was manned mainly by a 10 year old boy! Really!
Samos is a great Island and Pythagoria is a great resort, we really liked the Santa Catherina but 4 stars - no. It wouldn't take that much work to justify that extra star though. The trouble with a high rating is that it gives you high expectations and lets you down when it falls short. We would go to this hotel again but only if we knew what room we were in.
Final word goes to Nelly and Sylvia, the two lovely and very hard working ladies who man the reception, clean the rooms and generally help guests with any and all issues. I don't know how much they get paid but it's not enough!

Room Tip: Ask for a hig level apartment with a view of the Marina

My girlfriend and I stayed at these apartments during the latter part of July. The other reviewers are right when they talk about the magnificent views from this hotel. I’m not sure if anywhere in Samos would offer these kind of views – you are very high up in the hills. We could walk out of our room (25), walk a few steps forward and see way way below us a beautifully clear blue sea and Samos Marina. The sunsets were incredible. It is true that the hotel is quiet and secluded – but we saw this as a positive, not a negative.

It is also true that the hotel is not very well manned. After 8-9pm-ish, we would walk to the reception and there would be nobody to be seen. You are fairly high up in the hills and getting to the main harbour where the bars and restaurants are located, is easily a half hour walk or 7/8 minute drive. The road is dark and windy. So we would need to get a taxi (which was impossible to book if there was nobody around to book one for you). However, if we were lucky, which was most evenings, we would get driven down by the hotels’ owner George, who happened to just be milling around the hotel somewhere at most times and would take us down even if we had missed the regular 7pm / 730pm ride down.

It is true that George is a real character. Yes he is surly, and we could see why people thought he was miserable but we actually warmed to him – he was a little stressed at the time and is just the sort of character that wears his heart on his sleeve - he seemed to take things very personally but equally treated us like family members rather than customers. If he saw us walking up the hill, he would stop his van and just pick us up, and one evening drove us to his restaurant where the food wasn’t bad at all, and the atmosphere and live music made the evening one of the best of our holiday.

The rooms are clean, and very very spacious. I had stayed in self catering apartments before on other greek islands and this was the roomiest I have seen.

During our stay, the hotel pool was not working, so there was no bar service or restaurant open, but this problem was fixed the day that we left, and we were compensated. Whilst this was an issue for a lot of guests, this wasn’t for us as we had hired a car (which is essential if you want to do anything BUT sit by the pool all day), and drove around the island during the days finding amazing beaches to relax on. Samos is a beautiful island.

To summarise, it is essential to hire a car if you are staying at this hotel and want to get out of the hotel. Be prepared for a VERY quiet hotel, sometimes with nobody around, but with amazing views away from everything. If you can keep an open mind and not expect much but great views, a clean room, and can organise your transport if you want to get around outside of the hotel, then you will have a great stay here. We thought it was a waste of a great location that it was so quiet there, and there was not much happening on the food, drinks and entertainments front, but didn’t let this bother us as we had much more fun going to different places each night in the town area. For the price that we paid for the holiday, we would definitely go back.

the stay at this hotel has to be the worst i have had anywhere.
the rooms were not of a good level of cleanliness, the 2 young girls running the site were inexperienced, and the owner is miserable and surly.
the pool was out of action with an algae problem, and after 3 days with no pool we were moved to another hotel.this i have to say came at a high cost!!
the views are stunning - you could not ask for a better one, however it takes more than that to make a great place.
the bar is not open both the indoor or outdoor one, the gym is available to you but they do not clean it - the staff will quite happily tell you that- and the whole site is like a ghost town after 8pm as the reception is locked up and both staff members go to their room in town.
to top everything off, they had a piglet wandering around that they thought was great!! - however that soon changed when it had an upset tummy around the site - i will leave the rest to your imagination.
