Just back from our weekend stay at the Lodge in Doonbeg this weekend. From the friendly greeting at reception to the excellent accomadation it was excellent from start to finish. We stayed in one of the Courtyard Suites which was just perfect. The room and sitting room were spotless with everything you could possibly need there for your use.The golf course is just beautiful and well worth a visit on it's own.Darby's bar is a hidden gem with excellent food and staff with John behind the bar and Bridie & Doriese on the floor looking after all our needs.Top class staff looking after everybody so Mr Trump look after them they make the place what it is.Breakfast is very good with a great selection of fruits, juices & hot dishes. The setting of the hotel is ideal with sea views to die for.Overall it's a place to visit if you can and with a bit of luck I look forward to coming back here again.

Room Tip: The courtyard suites are ideal and close to the main building.

If you want to stay in a 5 star hotel then don't stay here. The term hotel does not apply here which perhaps was my mistake when booking. Doonbeg is a delux holiday village for golfers. If you don't play golf then there's nothing to do and there's nowhere to hang out other than Darby's bar and your own cottage which is not what I like when I go away.
I ate in Darby's for lunch and dinner and had to sit in my cottage the rest of the time. There are no grounds, its all links course. You can walk the beach which we did but the weather was bad so it was back to the cottage again. The way down to the beach is littered with rubbish.
I didn't know id be staying in a cottage and although it was very nice and finished to a high standard, it wasn't the hotel feeling I wanted when I booked a suite. It was a self catering holiday feel. We were lucky to be staying in the courtyard. If I had to walk to the links cottages or ask for a lift every time then I wouldn't have stayed at all. The links cottages also looked very run down when you are driving towards them. I'm sure they are nice inside but the outsides are terrible looking.
If you don't want to eat in the Long Room for dinner then you have to have lunch and dinner in Darby's, which is a nice bar and the food is nice but its no way 5 star, although the prices are.
The atmosphere at breakfast in the Long Room was AWFUL. The room was fab but none of the guests who were all couples were speaking to each other. My partner and I had to whisper to each other as there was no background noise. The music should be turned up in this instance. Breakfast was nice but I couldn't wait to get out of there afterwards which was a shame as I loved the room. Also, its a bit mean giving someone half a muffin with eggs benedict.
The staff we encountered in all departments were really good.
Overall I would say Doonbeg is a very good 4 stars for what it is. But its not for me.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the links cottages unless its summer and you mind walking. you can get a shuttle b...

Bring your sat nav!!! It is remote, tucked away beside the beach and a pure heavenly place. We just spent the weekend here, two nights, we stayed in a links cottage. I first thought it was a little odd not to be staying in the hotel and wondered how i would get up to the hotel in the evenings and back again, but never fear. The hotel shuttle was only ever 2 minutes wait away, and is on hand to bring you to the hotel and back and even in to the village if you needed. The Cottage itself is like something out of the movies. Had i known it would be that fab, i would have stayed longer and just chilled for a whole day in the cottage. Picturesque certainly fits the bill here. I've stayed in 5 star hotels before, but this one - OMG. And you could eat off the bathroom floor, i have never been to a place that was so clean before. At the hotel itself, you can either eat in the restaurant (the long room) or in the pub (Darby's). The staff were just outstanding. The barman was the best i've ever come across. The food was of course lovely, with a great selection. I have to give a special mention to the brown bread. I've never tasted anything like it, it was just to die for! We did not use the spa facility nor did we golf while we stayed as we really went to visit nearby areas such as the cliffs of Moher and the Aliwee caves, but i will be going back, and will certainly partake in both when i do. So you can gather from the review so far, we enjoyed ourselves!!! I will always write a review after any trip, and i am brutally honest, so this is the best review i've ever given and it deserves it.

Having looked forward to a 5 star weekend in Doonbeg I was extremely disappointed with the facilities and service in the hotel. Unless you're staying in a suite you have no option but to stay in an apartment and brave the weather each time you want to go to the bar for a drink or to the hotel for breakfast/dinner. There is no reception area to speak of so if you'd like to relax in a comfy hotel reception reading the paper and enjoying a coffee then you will be disappointed. We did have a lovely dinner on the Sat night (once we dried out from the dash across the courtyard in the lashing rain) and had even picked out what we were going to order the following night only to find out that the restaurant was closed and the only option was to eat in the golf house (fish and chips type menu). We were woken early on Sat morning by a rattling electricity box. We subsequently found out that there was no electricity in the block of apartments and no hot water. The staff seems unsurprised and came up with 3 different versions of what the problem was. Their solution was for us to gather up our toiletries and shower somewhere in the main hotel. It reminded me of staying in a hostel many years ago when hot water wasn't always a given. Two nights with dinner cost about €600 (including two bottles of wine and one or two beers) so Doonbeg know how to charge 5 star prices. I had expected an apology, a bowl of fruit or even dessert being removed off the bill but nothing was forthcoming. Good service in any hotel (5 star or otherwise) recognise that its cheap to rectify problems that invariably arise and put guests at ease. Having paid the bill and packed up I decided to go back into the receptionist and voice my disappointment. I got a defensive response (on this occasion ESB were blamed) however she did say she'd pass my comment on to the manager but I heard nothing further. Doonbeg have some way to go to bring their service up to 5 star standard. While Co Clare is beautiful and well worth visiting, I wouldn't choose Doonbeg.

This is my 4th time staying in Doonbeg and it just gets better every time I stay there. The staff could not have been more helpful and nothing was too much. We arrived at our Links Cottage suit to discover a bottle of wine and a lovely card welcoming us back which was such a wonderful touch. The food in Darbys was fantastic and the staff again could not have been nicer.
I am already planning my next trip.
