“Blackwater Lodge Hotel Wexford great Weekend away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2010

Myself and Partner took a chance on going to BLackwater Lodge Hotel in Wexford after hearing it been reopened. We stayed in the Hotel Sat & Sun Night. The Hotel has a new owner and has been fully refurbished. We had great food in the Hotel Resturant and there was live music both nights. There is also three other Pubs in the village which we visited. We are looking forward to revisiting Blackwater. The hotel is under www.blackwaterlodgehotel.com

Great Coastal drive down from Dublin, the sunny south east definitely excelled for our weekend. The village itself is very quaint and with a river flowing through it, adds to the ambiance. Checking in we were met by a most friendly enthusiastic lady, who told us the Hotel was just opened after a year and half closure. with the fresh smell of paint we had a look around the Hotel, where we found a fabuklous function room ideal for any occasion. The interior of this room drew my attention with the fabulous colour scheme, wallpaper and paint, their interior designer definitely has good taste. The room is alongside the River, so its quiet and also romantic for a Wedding Party of any size. Afer our Tour of the Hotel, the lady, I believe to be the General Manager Barbara, brought us into the Sports Bar where my boyfriend fell into heaven!!! Dragging him from the sports bars showing several different screens, we relaxed in the lounge where again we were met by friendly staff, the lounge menu had a lot to offer at great prices, a steak for €14.95, where would you get it? and with a Chef cooking it perfect....that night we were entertained by local musicians which were also good comedians as well as singers...The next morning we had our breakfast by the River in the Waterside Cafe, which also shows off the works of an excellent pastry.....as we were leaving, the sunday lunch menu was being placed out on the boards which looked very tempting and very reasonable at €22.50.... We would definitely return to this sweet hotel, with a great friendly atmosphere where it shows the staff really enjoy working there. Well done all keep up the good work !!!!!

your reviews of the above place are confusing various blackwater lodges, understandable when there are so many 'blackwaters. Blackwater Lodge and Fishery-which features in 2 highly unfavourable reviews written by anglers-is an old railway station unsympathetically converted in the 1970s.It owns/leases a number of salmon beats on the Cork Blackwater, which cane be a prolific river in the right conditions. The Lodge is postally in Co.Waterford near the picturesque village of Upper Ballyduff.
I stayed there often in the early 2000s and concurr with your 2 reviewers experiences.

We visited the lodge to take advantage of a couple of days salmon fishing. I know that anglers are not fussy but get reall even we would not expect to pay 5 star accommodation prices for what is effectively no more than a youth hostel. I am afraid the owners hire costs for fishing gear etc are just as ridiculous. and it would have been cheaper to buy some new gear at Dublin.

Under normal circumstances I would have inspected the room and said "your must be joking" and go elsewhere.

Unfortunately complaining would have antagonised the owner and likely to have compromised our chance of getting a good beat for salmon fishing. I cannot ever remember getting a hotel room that does not have a tv, radio of suitable drink making facilities, we were also extremely dismayed at the state of decoration and other facilities. The fact that there was a rat trap that could be viewed from the bedroom and at other areas around the hotel did not give us much more confidence either !

Unfortunately the proprietor is far more interested in going fishing than catering for his guests or investing in the property so be warned !

One thing is for sure there is no chance of us returning for another visit

This fishing lodge has pretty much seen it's best days behind it.
Though the people were personable the experience of staying there was not a good one. There was no way to get heat in the rooms, shower water was the merest trickle and the furniture including beds were something you'd see in some garage sale nightmare. Speaking of nightmares I awoke in the middle of the night to find large spiders all over my room! There was no bar ,no restaurant except for breakfast and precious few ammenities. other than a nice view. The whole experience other than the fly fishing lessons was a real disappointment. This may be more of a good deal for really avid fishermen who don't need to stay at the lodge or don't require the most fundamental of ammenities. I would not go back!
It was indeed the only disappointing time we spent in Ireland>

Just back from an overnight stay at the Blackwater - we decided to drive up to Wexford on a whim and after passing through Gorey - way too overcrowded and Enniscorthy - nice but not quiet enough, we drove onto Blackwater. It is a tiny village with four pubs including the hotel, a chip shop and a road to the beach.

I wasn't too sure from the outside but the room was very clean, although basic. No frills here, the shower gel and soap are nailed to the wall and the telly is tiny, but the staff were friendly and the room had everything we needed.

The hotel has car parking out the back, a pub and a restaurant, which we only used for breakfast, and is across from another three pubs. There is not really much to do there except drink, but one of the pubs had live music and that was good. During the day, you would be looking at visiting one of the empty, beautiful beaches nearby, or driving into Enniscorthy which takes about 20 mins.

I went to bed around midnight but obviously one of the pubs was open later and there were a lot of people out on the street in front of the hotel - I thought I heard a few fights starting so it wasn't the quiet rural place I had hoped for.

All in all though a nice hotel with b and b in summer for ninety euro between two - not as cheap as I would have liked but with nowhere else to stay out here who are you going to argue with?
