“Family type atmosphere at La Darsena, Agropoli”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

La Darsena is a small hotel in Agropoli, Italy. It is categorized as a 3 star hotel because it doesn't have all the amenities as some of the bigger hotels. There is no pool, coffee maker/tea in the room and the gym is quite small with only a few equipment but the hotel is on the beach with an amazing view from most rooms.

At La Darsena, they try to maintain a homely atmosphere with their home cooked meals and home-style serving of meals at the table. There is a set time for meals, B (7:30-8:30) L (13:00 - 14:00) and D (20:00 - 21:00). Both lunch and dinner include a bottle of wine (white or red) and a bottle of water. Newcomers are assigned a table towards the back and could graduate to a table with a better view of the ocean as tables become available.

Some of the staff do speak English and they were all friendly and aimed to please. Dietary needs are attended to and if you plan a tour and would miss lunch, you can request a take away lunch that is prepared and left at your table before you leave for the day.

While we were in Agropoli we visited, Salerno, Amalfi, Positano and Ravello on our first day, taking the local train to Salerno and then a ferry over to Positano. We then took the Sita bus for the Amalfi coast ride back to Salerno. The view was just beautiful.

Santa Maria S Mare is a quaint little town just south of Agropoli. It is a 20 minute bus ride away and is worth the trip.

Paestum is a 6 minute train ride from Agropoli. This city remained undiscovered until the 18th century thanks to the poets, artists and writers from around the world. I would strongly recommend visiting this archeological site.

There is so much to see in and around Agropoli that one week didn't seem long enough for us. We visited Capri, Pompeii, Naples and went into the old part of Agropoli.

I would recommend a trip to Agropoli and suggest La Darsena for the real Italian experience.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the beach were the best.

The waterfront location is excellent for taking the ferries and breakfast overlooking the waterfront. Rooms are immaculate, large and have wonderful views of Lake Como/Ballagio if upgraded. No problem with road noise if facing the lake. Staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. Would definitely stay again and try to visit Villa Carlotta in March or April when the gardens are in full bloom with azaleas and rhododendron.

Room Tip: Always choose a room on the lakefront for the view and quietness.

Excellent value. Very clean. Right on the sea. Train is close. BUT: Food is not good and so not what you would expect in Italy. So super recommended for accomodations but dont waste your money on their food.

Room Tip: Far from area where people gather at night on the terasse. 2nd floor facing the sea is best.

Our trip to Italy was beyond memorable! The hotel accommodations, staff and location of La Darsena/Agropoli were perfect for enjoying the "real" Italy and leaving the touristy side out of it. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating and the price was fabulous for everything that was included - clean, comfortable, quaint accommodations, all meals included, a bottle of wine at both lunch and dinner, comfortable loungers on the beach with umbrellas, spotless beach bathrooms, lovely outdoor covered lounge area with tables adjacent to the bar, planned outings if interested, maps and local information/internet access available for planning your own trips and personal usage. We have anaphylactic food allergies(fish, seafood & peanuts) and prior to our trip I emailed a translated letter stating this and the kitchen staff were happily prepared for us, and made sure all of our food was safe. The food was simply delicious and there was always plenty of it! We rarely ate all of the courses, as it was just too much for us. When we returned late the one night after our excursion to the Isle of Capri, we had missed supper. The kitchen staff were so kind to prepare a plate of cold meat, cheese, fruit and breads to ease our tired hunger after a wonderful day of exploring. Note if you are from ON, Canada pass by the temptation to spend the $(we spent $90 CAN for 3) on the boat trip to The Blue Grotto on The Isle of Capri; it is not even close to the beauty of The Grotto at The Bruce Peninsula Nat' Park and you are taken in and out of the grotto there in 2 minutes flat and not allowed to swim, dive, etc. The train is an inexpensive, safe way to travel all over Italy and is easy to navigate; scootering in Agropoli was a fantastic way to see all of the amazing views! If traveling to Naples(a must in our minds) once arriving via the train(DON'T scooter in Naples; it is CRAZY for driving, but very entertaining to watch as a pedestrian!HA!HA!) make your way to the tourist information office. They are wonderful and will help you find exactly what you want to see via maps that they will give you for historical sites and shopping areas and of course the best places to enjoy PIZZA! Do not miss out on the treasures to be found in Paestum - the ruins & museum are unbelievable and the town itself is small, uncrowded and quaint. Everyone is soooo friendly in Italy; we made international friends so easily and this helped make our trip even more spectacular as we were allowed to "get inside their lives" and truly experience Italy and all that it has to offer. The only disappointment was that we had to leave very early on our last day to accommodate another Canadian group that had a much earlier flight than ours. I have never been anywhere that I had tears upon departure; words cannot explain how much we enjoyed the culture, the history, the food and the people of Italy!( & don't forget Bella, the friendly little dog that we fell in love with at La Darsena) We'd go again in a minute.

Room Tip: If you are wheelchair bound, there are accessible rooms with ramps and the beach has a ramp going do...

My husband & I stayed at La Darsena last October for 2 weeks. The weather was stilll very warm; often we would sit out on the beach chairs after lunch & soak up the sun. There was plenty to do even though we were the last group there before the hotel closed for the season. The food was fabulous - tons of it, & you could even ask for seconds. The servers were really patient & kind & always served us with a smile, no matter how late we arrived. We used the train & went everywhere - it was only a 10-15 minute walk into town each day to catch the train to Pompei, Baglitella, Sorrento - each beautiful in their own way. Going the other way on the line, we found a little fishing village called Piscata, way up on a hill. We took the train & then caught a bus into town - really worth the trip. Be sure to eat at the restauarnt at the top of the hill - great pasta/pizza & the view is stunning. Going in the same direction on the train, we came to Santa Maria - beautifully situated on top of a hill. Don't forget to see the Basilica there - the view is magnificent. & there's a little pizza place right in the centre of the square that serves magnifico pizza! Walking into the town of Agropoli is also wonderful - we did this everyday, especially after the big meals we ate. This is definitely not a 5 star hotel, but the atmosphere, food & surrounding area, as well the hotel & staff made it a truly memorable vacation. If you go into Pompei, visit Rosarios for his traditional pizza & specialty desserts. PS: It didn't rain one day out of the 14 days we were there.

Room Tip: Book ocean view if you can & avoid the rooms over the kitchen - they tend to be noisy after hour...
