“Good location near town and train station”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2013

We stayed here for a week in June mainly due to the proximity to the train station. Overall we enjoyed our stay but the hotel could definitely use some upgrades and improvements.

Room - Pros - beautfiul view from our balcony - easy to access, a/c
Cons- very small, lacks conveniences such as soap holders in shower, no shelving for toiletries as well as lighting in bathroom is poor; only one bed side lamp, no safe for valuables.

Food - We wondered why there were so few people in the dining room although the hotel was supposedly full. We soon realized that it wasn't very good and all the food was oversalted.
Breakfast is the standard croissants, cereal, yogurt. We noticed a few days later than some guests had omelletes but you had to ask. Lunch and dinner were good for the first couple days and then it was rather mundane consisting of pasta and soup, sometimes a salad. We ate about half of our meals at restaurants and enjoyed the food much better. Wine is typical house wine comparable to homemade wine.

Swimming - pool is very nice and lots of chairs but not as many loungers. No beach towels so bring your own.
You have to walk to the beach and pay $15 if you want an umbrella and chairs to be set up.

Sevice - While servers, and front desk staff were friendly and helpful, we found the hotel management disorganized.
On our last day we asked for breakfast at 6 am. as we were leaving at 7a.m. At 6:40 as we were ready to leave, the manager appeared and when we told her that we didn't get our breakfast as requested, she had the servers open it up but it was too late at that point, Then the manager told us that we owed 7 euros for 2 cappucinos and 2 teas that we had after dinner one night. We were leaving and didn't have time to argue the point but were quite disappointed at this attitude, especially since we weren't told there was an extra charge.

The town of Agropoli - friendly and some cute shops but would be really helpful to practice your Italian
We enjoyed the cafes in town and the Ristorante on the way to train station. Reasonable prices and delish food - a nice change from the hotel food.

Transportation - the ground transportation was 4 hrs and was comfortable.

Overall, we enjoyed our vacation but wouldn't return to this Hotel for the above reasons as well as the 4 hr drive after an 8 or 9 hr flight is exhausting and no washroom aboard.
As well, the management needs to show a presence and interest in the guests.

Room Tip: If you stay here, ask for the Oceanview Room Learn Italian - rent a car because the train and buses...

Stayed here the 2nd week of June. This hotel was part of a package with Air Transat which also included 3 meals and transfers for 7 days. Since I usually travel independently, I don't normally stay in one place more than 3-4 days nor do I take any All inclusive or Almost AI's. This turned out to be great and much better than I expected. We had room 202 with a balcony facing the ocean and the medium sized room was very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful whether for directions or anything we needed during our stay.

AIRPORT TRANSFER: Based on some not so great comments I read on TA, I thought that I mention that there was someone waiting with a sign that said AIR TRANSAT, HOTEL MARE as soon as we collected our luggage and exited. Bus was nearby, air conditioned and with a friendly driver. We stopped for a 20 minute break about halfway there. It took 4 hours. No problems on the way back either.

ROOM:
We only used the A/C the first 30 minutes we arrived and then never had to since there was always a nice breeze coming from the water.
You can leave your hairdryer at home, since the room has one, but don't forget your face cloths (not provided in European countries) and your beach towels (not provided by hotel).

FOOD: The breakfasts were continental, served buffet style: hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, cereal, yogurt, toast and many, many sweet pastries considered by most North Americans as dessert. Although there were several juices available, no fruit was found at the buffet. It took us a couple of days to figure out that you can order an omelet if you wish. If you are going out for the day, then you could order a “Box Lunch” consisting of a sandwich, bottled water, juice and fruit.

At dinner, you are asked to select your choices for the next day. They have 2 courses for each meal of which you select from 2 items. The portions are generous so we had to learn not to eat everything on the 1st course so we could taste the 2nd one! The soups and pasta and seafood were excellent. On two of the nights, we had a BBQ dinner on the patio outdoors. If you really cannot eat what is being offered, just ask what else they could give you as they really want to feed you...no matter what!

LOCATION: A 2 minute walk to the main road with lots of cafes, stores, etc and 10 minutes to train station or Castle. Although it is right on the ocean, there is no swimming beach itself however the public beach is just 5 minutes to the left of the hotel. Since I don't swim in the ocean, the hotel swimming pool was fine by me.

GOOD TO KNOW: We brought folding insulated lunch bags for our Box Lunches along with small ice packs that the hotel let us put in their freezer. Otherwise, the lunch is just packed in a paper bag and we wanted to keep it cool. You can buy your own beer at the local grocery store and just ask the hotel for glasses and an ice bucket. They also let me use their computer to go online. Just ask, and you shall receive....

All in all this turned out to be a great hotel, originally we had also looked into staying at the Darsena (on beachfront but no pool) but were very glad with our choice, preferring a smaller hotel with personalized service and once we saw where the Darsena is located (a good 25 minute hike to train station) we were very pleased with Hotel Mare. Many thanks to all the wonderful staff!

Room Tip: Try to get an ocean view room.

My husband and I lead cycling tours in Italy. We recently took a group of 30 cyclists to Hotel Mare and were so pleased with the hotel, the hospitality and the service! Great location next to the beach and a short walk to the center of town. The pool was beautifully landscaped and the perfect place for our group to relax after a long day on the bike. Will definitely bring groups back!!

Just got back from spending the past 5 days at this quaint, homey hotel. The staff was very accommodating and beyond friendly! They were always trying to please and make us feel at home. The weather was the worst because it rained our entire stay but the hospitality we received was top notch! The room we had was very clean and spacious. The shower was a welcome surprise! It had ample room and the shower head and water pressure were fantastic, which isn't the norm in Europe. The breakfasts were amazing from tasty omelettes to cold meats and cheeses. The lattes were made to perfection! On two occasions we dined at the hotel and all I can say is DELICIOUS!!! The chef is a 5 star cook in my opinion! I can hardly wait to return to this hotel to experience it in its full glory during the Summer months. If it was such a wonderful experience during the colder months I can only imagine what this gem of a hotel has to offer when the pool is open and the beach is accessible. Mille grazie to everyone at Hotel Mare but a particular heartfelt thank you to the very sweet Luanna, hotel manager, and Signor Franco. Al prossimo.. . Sandra

Room Tip: Our room faced the beach and the pool. Room 205 highly recommended!! The balcony was an added bonus...

I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were really delightful and warm and nothing was too hard. Really nice rooms and has all the bits including a pool and great breakfast. My room was right on the ocean and the gentle lapping of the water at night was really nice. There is a dog that lives in the Hotel called Ringo who is really cute. Really close to Paestum and heaps of buffalo mozzarella around which I love.

I traveled solo from Oct. 12-27. LOVED everything about this cozy family-owned hotel. It is conveniently situated (10 min. walk to Train station) ...and right along the beach and boardwalk of Agropoli. THE FOOD was INCREDIBLE (compliments to chef Luigi..wow) The staff (Luanna, Mohammed, and Valentina) are helpful, friendly and corteous. The rooms are spacious, and above all extremely CLEAN...Overall an awesome experience thanx to an awesome staff and place...Grazie Agropoli and Hotel Mare....a la prossima. xo

My husband and I spent the last 2 weeks of July at this fantastic hotel. There are really no negatives. The location was awesome. The train is a 10 minute walk away as is the city centre ( much closer than the Darsena). Our room overlooked the sea, and was clean and equipped ( nothing fancy, but who cares.). The food at the hotel was amazing. No complaints! Lots of seaood, but always a meat alternative. The staff were all wonderful, very friendly and helpful. Valentina(speaks pretty good English), and Angelica helped us plan day trips. The wait staff, all the guys (Mohamed, Sergio and Billy) were quick to serve, funny, efficient and accommodating. Box lunches were awesome (nice to have waters and a sandwich, especially if you are using the trains). We visited Paestum, Salerno, did an Amalfi Coast tour on the ferry as well as one with a driver, Naples, and Pompeii, all on our own....very easy and not far to travel. The town is great, lots of shopping and restaurants. We found this region very inexpensive and very friendly! We would return in a heartbeat! It feels like we have an extended family at this hotel!
