Dropped in for a lunch on the ground floor restaurant on the waterfront. Exceptional service, wonderful wine and really good food. The perfect place to have a relaxing meal with a fantastic view. It´s pricey, but worth it.

Although this hotel has a few drawbacks the setting and views make up for all it's flaws. Santa Maria is a small town, and there is not much to do other than tour the surrounding area (Paestum is a 30 minute drive), and sit on the beach. The hotel is located 100 meters from the center of town, directly on the sea. There are 12 (superior) rooms on the sea side (Golfo di Salerno) all with nice balconies and views of Capri and the Almalfi Coast (at a distance). The other 7 rooms are in the back, and I would definitely opt for the sea side. We had dinner brought to our room terrace the first night, and the experience was tough to beat as we watched the moon set over Capri.
The physical plant of the hotel is quite nice (an old villa converted into a hotel), in particular the common areas. Lunch can be had outside on the terrace right on the sea. The lunch and dinner selections are limited, and if you intend to stay for more than a few days I would avoid committing to eating at the hotel every day.
The other problem is that there are not a lot of restaurant choices in Santa Maria. We had lunch at Per Baca, and I would definitely recommend it for either lunch or dinner. For a change try Nello for pizza take out one block away. The local tabac carries the IHT and the FT a day late.
We had room #103 on the first floor, and I would avoid it as it faces the reception desk which for whatever reason can be noisy at night.
We spent 5 nights at VS in May. Fortunately, the weather was spectacular until the day we left. I understand that the town is very crowded in July and August, and a crowded small town most likely is not very pleasant.
The owner, his son and other members of the family couldn't have been more accommodating and pleasant.

Room Tip: I would ask for the second (top) floor facing the sea. It should be very quiet. There is an elevator.

We stayed here in August. The room was clean and comfortable and the seaview unbelievable. You couldnt have got any closer to the sea. The key element of this hotel (apart from the fantastic view) is the service. Nothing is too much trouble and they really do treat you like a member of the family. We ate at the hotel regularly and found the food to be of a very good standard. Typical southern italian cuisine. I would definately recommend this hotel as a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a room with a sea view, its well worth the money and will make your holiday really special

The service provided was exceptional. The rooms were delightful, clean, beautifully decorated, with the best possible views. The location is second to none, I think all balconies overlook the sea. There is plenty to see and do, beach is 5 minutes away, small harbour 1 minute, small town 5 minutes walk to bars and restraunts. Hotel food we found to be very good , all local produce, ie fish, meat, and vegetables, also the wine from the Cilento is superb. All staff were charming, as were the Tortora family who also catered for us admirably, nothing to much trouble. Paradise, we will go back. David Starkey

Room Tip: Ithink all rooms have perfect sea views.
