“Traditional, Nice Hotel.”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

I don't like to use the word 'nice' when describing things but I feel this is an adequate word to describe this hotel as it was not amazing, neither was it poor. My partner and I arrived at the hotel to be given a room on the side of the hotel facing the road. Needless to say we were disappointed so requested to be moved. We were given a room in the villa adjacent to the hotel which we were happier with. This included a good size bathroom and balcony (much better than the size in the hotels).

The staff in the hotel were generally quite friendly. We did feel though that as a young couple some of the staff did not necessarily know how to communicate with us or maybe did not try as hard to communicate with us?

The food at the hotel isn't bad but I would strongly recommend to try some of the restaurants in Sant Agata and Sorrento as the food is on another level. Mimi's in Sant Agata does probably the best steak I've eaten in my life for 13 Euros. The Parrucchiano in Sorrento is probably the most beautiful restaurant I have ever set foot in as the decor includes surroundings of lemon, orange and lime trees.

Overall this hotel is pleasant but I would definitely say it is more a 3 then 4 star which the hotel states it is.

The pool area is small but clean (the pool is freezing though)! One good point about the pool area was the fact free towels were provided which was very handy.

We stayed at the Hermitage for 10 nights and had a fantastic time. The staff at the hotel went out of their way to ensure we were happy and they really made the hotel a great place to stay. The hotel is a 2 minute walk away from a small village with lovely bars, restaurants and a supermarket. The hotel also offers a shuttle bus into Sorrento which we found suited our needs (first bus approximately 8.30am, last bus about 10.30pm) although local buses were also readily available.

The pool area was always well-kept with great views and no rushing to reserve sunbeds. The breakfasts and dinners at the hotel well great. In particular, the evening meal always offered several different options and the pasta courses were especially good. We also ate at the pool bar for lunch several times and also found the food here to be reasonably priced and tasty. Our room had a fantastic view and was very clean and cool.

I would recommend the hotel to anyone thinking of visiting Sorrento and the Almalfi Coast.

We have just returned from spending 4 wonderful nights at the Grand Hotel Hermitage.

As has been mentioned before the Hermitage affords a stunning location close to the top of a hill overlooking the Bay of Naples, about 20 minutes drive from Sorrento. The complimentary hotel shuttle will take you to and from the middle of Sorrento at pre-arranged times.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were initially greeted by Franco at the lower level who took our bags up to our room. Franco seemed to do many things around the hotel and was really helpful. At reception was the very gracious William, who explained things about the hotel around surrounding area to us. All the staff we met were equally accommodating.

We had a lovely room on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the bay. The view is stunning and a lovely way to wake up in the morning. The hotel, in general, is quite old-fashioned, but this added to the charm. We were not looking for a modern, multi-story hotel, so thankfully the Hermitage was just the right size to be very personal.

What really adds to the hotel’s charm is the staff, the level of service and the guests. A testament to this is how many people come here year after year, including a mother and daughter who had been to the hotel every year for 36 years!

The staff work really hard to provide a very good experience. William, the owner, was often seen working tirelessly at the desk and was so welcoming when we arrived. That continued throughout the stay, even organising me to see a local dentist when I broke a tooth. The restaurant staff were fantastic, especially the manager, and at every meal remembered to give us our jug of water with lemons after we had ordered it the first night. Breakfasts were a treat, and really set us up for the day. We went half-board so the evening meal was a set menu with a choice from 3 starters and 3 main courses + dessert or fruit (sometimes both). Some guests felt that was inadequate but we felt it was fine. There is also a separate a la carte menu, which was presumably, at extra cost.

The local village of Sant Agata was charming and less than a 10 minute walk away, with a number of nice places to sit out and have a drink, snack, etc. We liked the Buenos Aires and the Bar Orlando. Both had outstanding pizza.

We loved our short stay and hope to return, perhaps adding to the list of those returning year after year. Thank you to William and all your staff.

Room Tip: We liked facing the sea.

When our travel company rang us a few days before flying out to Italy and said that as our Sorrento hotel had been overbooked they were moving us to The Hermitage Hotel 7 miles up in the mountains we were somewhat apprehensive. On arrival we were given Room 10 (large and spacious) in the Villa Romita annexe 150 yards away and it has a large two sided verandah with fantastic uninterrupted views of Sorrento, the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius and nearby mountains. (In fact some guests apparently requested to be moved out of the hotel up to the Villa). A courtesy bus runs back and forth to Sorrento but don't forget where to meet it on the return journey. One couple did and the taxi fare was £44! Pros -- Very helpful welcoming staff, large open lounge areas, a lovely pool and wide choices of Italian food at breakfast and evening meals. Cons -- it is a steep walk up to the Villa (but chairs and tables are positioned at two places on the way up). Wifi is a bit iffy in Room 10. Many day tours are available (Capri, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Amalfi coast etc) but they usually entail 7.15-7.30am coach pickups resulting in early wake-up calls and breakfasts!! One final comment--we are so pleased that our original hotel was overbooked.

Room Tip: Villa Romita Room 10

This is a beautiful hotel. It is actually not in Sorrento. It is in Massa Lubrense, up on the hillside. Way up on the hillside !!! They have a free shuttle to town and back that takes about 15 minutes. Almost every room has a gorgeous view of the Bay of Naples and the island of Capri. The rooms are spacious by European standards as are the bathrooms. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The free breakfast was outstanding. The restaurant offered many options for dinner. We ate there once and the food was good. The one drawback is the shuttle. It only starts running at 0900 AM. So you can't get an early start unless you order a taxi. It is too far too walk to town. So, you are held captive by their shuttle schedule. That varies on a daily basis. Other than that, we had a great stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room facing the Bay of Naples
