“Some things were superb but....”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

Two michelin stars, a reputation and a steep price tag raise the expectations. Some of them were met.

The welcome is great and a cast of thousands seem to really care about the diner's wellbeing. It's not clear what all of them do, and we could have done with a little more guidance with the encyclopaeic wine list but we never felt left out.

The food is superb in places, in others just good or even OK. One pasta dish got the eyebrows shooting upward with delight, some of the others left us not wanting more. By the time orders for pudding were invited, we were not sure we wanted it. The staff swayed us and we were truly glad they did; pudding stood head and shoulders above almost everything else and deserves a recommendation on its own.

The only jarring note was around the visit to the wine cellars. They are worth the walk but I would have left happier without sitting through a sales video about the brand an opportunity to buy some odds & ends. The staff here were also the least warm, perhaps because we didn't feel tempted to purchase.

So this is a good restaurant with some great food. It also has some uninspiring food. We enjoyed the best but expected more.

“Good but a bit cookie-cutter (one size fits all)”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

Let down by the Sommelier, who didn't pay us much attention but rather gave us the stock-standard house wines when asking for suggestions. Otherwise, quite an enjoyable meal.

“Just gorgeous”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

We ate here recently for my birthday and loved it. A very elegant restaurant - far more beautiful that the photographs show and service was both understated and attentive. It was a great choice for a special occasion. The food was amazing - every single course but especially the lamb and of course, the petit fours! The wine cellar was brilliant and well worth the quick dash across the courtyard in torrential rain! It's a classy fine dining experience that avoids being pretentious - the fact that I was encouraged to remove my sandals by Livia, rather than ruin them in the rain negated the fomality! I'm unlikely to leave a 2 star Michelin restaurant barefoot, with shoes in hand twice in a lifetime - a really memorable birthday!

“Best in the are by far.”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

Enjoyed the traditionally tasting menu with some very good wines to match. Very good cooking with first class ingredients. We'll worth the little tricky way to find the village and if you visit the area I recommend to come here. Nice touch to be shown the wine cellar at the end of the evening, most amazing wine cellar I've ever seen.
