Two michelin stars, a reputation and a steep price tag raise the expectations. Some of them were met.
The welcome is great and a cast of thousands seem to really care about the diner's wellbeing. It's not clear what all of them do, and we could have done with a little more guidance with the encyclopaeic wine list but we never felt left out.
The food is superb in places, in others just good or even OK. One pasta dish got the eyebrows shooting upward with delight, some of the others left us not wanting more. By the time orders for pudding were invited, we were not sure we wanted it. The staff swayed us and we were truly glad they did; pudding stood head and shoulders above almost everything else and deserves a recommendation on its own.
The only jarring note was around the visit to the wine cellars. They are worth the walk but I would have left happier without sitting through a sales video about the brand an opportunity to buy some odds & ends. The staff here were also the least warm, perhaps because we didn't feel tempted to purchase.
So this is a good restaurant with some great food. It also has some uninspiring food. We enjoyed the best but expected more.
