“Sardinia - to be added to the bucket list of must sees”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

Grand Smeraldo is a beautiful hotel/resort in Costa Smeralda. Great location and beautiful grounds. Very meditteranean looking with its colours and decor. Beautifully nestled in descending boulders. Service by all was absolutely remarkable. Not to be confused with the expectation of American/Carribean resorts however. Breakfast accommodated all cultures, with lots of assortment. We did not opt for full board, which included dinner as there are too many beautiful resturants to choose from both within walking distance and within very close driving distance. Renting a car is ideal in Sardinia and safe- so much beautiful land, towns and the most beautiful beaches in the world to discover. Must visits are Porto Cervo and La Pelosa beach in Stintino (2 1/2 hrs from this hotel, but well worth the drive) and a must do are the boat tours of the island - La Maddelena etc.

I have just returned from a 5 day stay at this hotel. Firstly im a travel agent and have been to many lovely places all over the world and admittedly yes I am a bit fussy. But can not fault this hotel at all. The location is beautiful, a gorgeous little beach surrounded by some spectacular rock formations and probably some of the most crystal clear waters in the med.
The hotel itself is very well laid out with little pools throughout the lovely gardens , very pretty and allows for a quiet relaxing atmosphere. The views from the main bar terrace are stunning, the ideal place for drinks and to gaze at the dream like Sardinian sunsets.
The rooms are what you would expect from a 4star hotel, some people have described them as a little tired, I don't think so!!, this hotel isn't meant to be like some of the high glitz hotels you could find eg in Cannes or Monte Carlo, I would describe it as exuding rustic Sardinian charm but with high standards. This is what Sardinia is all about.
The food standards were excellent, a few have moaned about the breakfast, but I can assure you it is a lot better than some breakfasts I have had in hotels throughout Europe, no complaints at all.
Dinner was superb with good quality food served by friendly, efficient staff. Staff obviously well trained.
Infact all hotel staff were fantastic, nothing ever being too much trouble for them , whilst at the same time very courteous and polite.
Being in the industry, I will certainly recommend this hotel to my clients if they wish to visit Sardinia and would send them there in confidence that they are in good hands.

If I did have a little niggle that I found irritating, it would be the performance every morning of certain nationalities at very early hours, yes Im an early riser, rushing around trying to find the best sunbeds to claim with there towels. Quite amusing actually but just slightly annoying.
Certainly not the hotels fault, but possibly a rule could be put in place to prevent this.

So overall a great visit, I would certainly return again and hopefully have the pleasure of sending some of my valued clients too.
Thank you to everyone for a lovely visit.

We were twice in this hotel. Last year we stayed for two weeks at the room with side - view. This year we have been there for 4 days on our way back home from Corsica at a sea front room 225. We like this hotel due to its perfect location, nice beach and good food. The breakfast is ok to me with a usual set of things: eggs, cheese, ham, bread, butter, cottage-cheese, croissant, jam, fruit, etc. I can survive without juice having fresh fruit instead. This set is not of the same quality as you might have in France for example, but sufficient enough for not to be hungry.
The rooms are specific but clean and nice.
The restaurant staff is very friendly, we love them all! The reception staff is nice - Valentina always settles all your problems, but when she is not there it is more difficult to be satisfied with the level of service. We simply like this hotel!

Ok so this was the hotel for our second week of our two week holiday. We had walked Rome and Venice the week before so were keen for feet up, relax and sun bathe.

From the airport (Olbia) it is only 22 miles, but this is either a well timed bus (google sun lines) or an expensive taxi transfer (80 euros each way for two).

The hotel is beautifully positioned on a rocky coast, it has lovely gardens and rocky beaches. The rest of the decor inside (apart from the reception and main bar which is nice) is very dated in decor. This doesn't mean it's unclean. If your not looking for modern chic then it does the job.

The food ranges from poor to good throughout the day. Poor being breakfast; lots of choice but budget, watered down budget juice, fake scrambled egg, tinned pears/peaches/prunes. We stuck to the cereal and croissants each day which 'did a job'. The coffee is awful, unless you order something e.g. Cappuccino, macchiato etc. The dinner in the evening was completely at the other end of the scale!? Four courses service a la carte style. We found this excellent for choice and quality. The drink prices are really reasonable too.

The service throughout the stay was good. In particular our evening waiter Daniel was very friendly and always very courteous.

The hotel runs a free trip Wednesday and Thursday around the local interested coastal site by minibus. Book on this, it looked good and we missed out!

We had a complimentary upgrade (and prosecco as it was our honeymoon which was a nice touch) to room at the front which meant we could walk out directly to the pools/toward the beach front. This was excellent but a warning. There is a bar along the coast. There were two windy days. On these days the noise from the bar was blown toward our room. The patio doors did help to stop the music waking me at 1am till 2am on these nights. The room was quiet and peaceful every other night.

Overall I would not decide to come back here or recommend it to friends. Breakfast is poor and needs addressing, the lack of sleep during those two nights is not what you would wish for anyone's holiday! If these two things were addressed it would have been a four star from us. Five stars for room decor upgraded.

Room Tip: You will want to stay with a view to the front but read the review and see my unfortunate experience...

We stayed at the hotel the second half of August 2013. The venue is nice but old. The view is stunning. Location wise, I found it perfect.
The breakfast was bland at best, with arguably the worst fresh juice i've tried in a while.
I know one doesn't go Baia Sardinia to check emails, but having the possibility to check work related stuff twice a week sounds like a reasonable request to me, particularly considering it's a 4 star hotel we are talking about. It took me 40 minutes to check one mail. Between the login and the system not working and the isp's speed, a 30 second task (checking one email and forwarding it) took me ages. Still, again, people don't come here to check emails, granted.

The thing that really threw me off was the service: appalling to say the least. I've seen better service at that backpacker's hostel in Khao San Road.
The bar on the beach has a big sign that says "Open till 6:30". Even with an empty bar, the hotel employees staunchly refused to prepare me a cocktail at 6:05, saying it would require, and, i quote, "too much work".

The experience wasn't bad, but i must say it was arguably the worst 4 star hotel i've ever been to.

We stayed here from the 22 - 29 June 13. The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and the grounds are well maintained. Breakfast was suffcient, although the 'fruit juice' was more like fruit squash'. We also had fresh fruit on the first couple of days but this changed to 'tinned'. Our room was clean, but there was a rail missing from the wardrobe which was not fixed - even though we informed our agent. Our main gripe was that he hotel was hosting something called the 'summer games'. We have really little knowlege of what this was but it meant the hotel was taken over by 'sporty types', celebraties and their entourage. This meant that the main restaruant by the terrace was closed for dnner the whole time we were there. This meant you either had to eat in the more expensive Orange restarurant (which was ok, been to better) or make your way down to the nearest off site restaurant which was about a 10 minute walk away down - then up a very steep hill. People with mobility issues should be made aware of this as taxi's like everything else in this area is VERY expensive. The pool bar was also take over by this group - which meant we did not have the quiet and relaxing break we expected.

Room Tip: Check to see if they are hosting any 'Summer Games'!

This is a great hotel, in a perfect Location. Less than a 5 minute walk to the square of Baia Sardinia (left out of the hotel drive entrance, first left and down the hill).
Great little beach area, and plenty of pools with various little sunbathing areas on various levels, which give you a lot more privacy than most hotel pools.
Hotel gardens are beautiful and very well maintained. The rooms are not 4 star by UK standards, but then we were in Italy. My past experiences of Italy has been similar. The rooms were probably slightly old fashioned, but in a nice sort of way. They were very clean with fresh towels and bedding every day. Yes the beds are a bit hard, but I like them this way.
My only real critism of the hotel was the breakfast - it was rubbish! Fine is you like croissants, fruit and yoghurt - but I am a traditional English person! We found the staff to be friendly and helpful the majority of the time.
The resort is a little on the quiet side. Only really a couple of places where you can just drink - the rest is restaurants, although plenty to keep you going for a week. Brilliant if you like fish as this is probably about 80% of each menu.
A night in Porto Cervo is a must, but make sure you take plenty of money. Fantastic Marina, Shop and Bar area to wander round. Although a round of 4 drinks cost us 85 Euro. The taxi there from the hotel cost 25 Euro and back was 35 Euro as it was after midnight.
