We stayed at the Sporting Hotel or Hotel Sporting however you want to put it, 14th Feb to 21st Feb, having booked with Neilson for our family (Me, Wife, 18yr old son & 12yr old son) to go skiing for the week.
Neilson as a travel agent were rubbish, but that's another review....
The Sporting Hotel is situated on the main drag through Tonale at what is probably the end farthest from ski school meeting place & the official lift pass office, however that only makes it approx 200metres away.
It's not really a ski in/ski out property but pretty close, come out of the ski locker room, walk 50yds carrying your gear up a slight incline, strap your skis/board on & ski the next 50yds to the nearest lift (Valbiolo) & ski from there to the "main" resort area, which is a nice warm up for the 1st ski of the day on a windy blue run.
The hotel itself is about averagely sized for the area with about 52 rooms on 3-4 floors & a lift, it has a ski locker room too for all your gear in the basement, the key for the locker comes with your room key when you check in.
The hotel is family run by Francesco & his family, Francesco being the son & one of the few English speakers in the hotel, having said that the waiting staff at meal times were very good & there were no communication issues & above all, each & everyone of the staff there were very friendly there were no problems at all.
The rooms we had were spacious & warm, there was plenty of hot running water no matter what time you seemed to have a shower (no baths in either room we booked) & the heating worked fine too.
The public areas were clean, well decorated & modern, the rooms were a bit dated & tired but clean, warm, dry & comfortable nonetheless & the beds very comfy too, daily maid service & towel change if you wanted it...
The food served is traditional Italian, with continental breakfast buffet & tea/coffee/hot chocolate brought to your table as required.
Dinner was more of a traditional rural Italian affair with a salad buffet, followed by a starter of soup of pasta course, main course of meat/veg & then dessert, you are expected to pick your following nights meal the night you eat from a menu that is left on your table, not a problem once you get used to the idea...
There is a "wellness centre" there which is basically a spa, looks nice but didn't use it so can't comment, was only in Tonale for the skiing & the snow conditions were nigh on perfect, complimented by a nice stay in a great hotel.
