“Beautiful Abbey”

Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore

Monte Oliveto maggiore is the centre of Benedictine order in the world. You can see a beautiful abbey, with church and religious services as in the Middle Age. it's really fascinating. You see monks at work all around, because their remark is "ora et labora", "pray and work".
You can buy their products, hand made, as wine (I suggest Monaco Rosso), liquors, ointments, beauty creams and so on. An unusual experience, full of sense for religious people, and interesting for other people, that admires the buildings, products, and food.

A very impressive, quiet and uncrowded monastery with a wonderful set of 15th century frescoes (depicting scenes from the the life of St Benedict) adorning the cloisters. As one can also visit the refectory and the library it is possible to get a real feeling for the place. There is interesting woodwork in the choir of the church - although as its a bit dark a small torch would be useful. It is a bit of a hike from the carpark (2 euros) and a climb back on uneven paths, so wear sturdy shoes.

Go see this beautiful monastery. It is not touristy and offers a peaceful look at both the natural and manmade beauty of the monastery. Ask to tour the winery too and see the hundreds of years old casks. do wear sturdy walking shoes as there are hills and cobblestones.

impressive group of buildings in dramatic situation, lots to look at. What I really loved though were the 14th C frescos in the cloisters and the inlaid pictures in the choir stall. Great art!

If you can time your visit to coincide with the Benedictine monks' singing a divine office in Gregorian chant, you will have a sublime experience.
