“Giordano's Tower”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

This holiday will stay in memory for a long time to come. I'm sorry it had to come to an end.

I found this Tower on the holidaylettings website almost 18 months ago and although we opted for a holiday in Sicily in 2012, I am so happy that I recollected this property for a summer holiday in 2013.

The fact you able to stay in a property with such a longstanding history is memorable in itself, but its location is ideal if you want to soak up ambience in the cities such as Siena and Florence, tour the local vineyards, hill-towns and wine producing areas or use it as a base for walking or touring on a bike.

Each night, following our meal on the roof terrace we were able to see the starry sky and many shooting stars each evening. A privilege in most places but something too easily taken for granted.

The community of Asciano is truly welcoming and it is always helpful to learn a few phrases in Italian to help you on your way, because your host community will always warm to anyone who shows even the briefest knowledge of their culture.

The property wouldn't be ideal for anybody who cannot handle climbing a staircase, but this doesn't need to be elaborated, since its a Tower! The property is kept in excellent order and throughout our stay we were taken good care of by our hosts. If driving, a private parking area will be shown to you away from the tower just a short distance away.

The town itself is equipped with bakeries, butchers, a gelaterie, various bars and restaurants and a small supermarket. There is also a train station, museum and tourist information centre if you require this. For such a well eqipped place, it has retained its charm as a rural village.

For everything I've commented on in this review, this property represents astonishing value for money.

The Tower is absolutely fantastic! A beautiful week was spent in a superb location right in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany. The roof was incredible: private and unique, with excellent views - an amazing place to enjoy some quality wine and the Sunset! We cannot recommend this place highly enough. The Owner is very nice indeed and very helpful. Exquisite fresh local produce even in the local supermarket!

This place is great! Such a unique experience being able to stay in a watch tower that's been converted into a lovely apartment. The best part is the rooftop terrace! The view is great, and it's such a great place to start your morning or end your evening! The town is very charming also, although it's important to know which nights the restaurants are closed. Roberto was extremely nice and helpful. I would recommend this location for anyone wanting a quiet, peaceful place to stay in Tuscany!

We (me and my partner) combined a city trip Milan with a week Tuscany and back a weekend Milan. After a short weekend we rented a car and drove circa 400 km to Asciano (20 km from Siena). The drive was quick and easy. The tower is situated in de wall of the town (private parking). From the roof terrace you have a fine view over the town and the landscape. We had breakfast every morning on the roof. The bakery is 200 m from the tower at a square where you can get free wifi with super speed. The tower is top. 100% privacy. Well equipped, modern and authentic. Beds are good. Clean and fresh. The walls are thick so it is always cool in the tower. It’s the place to be in summer. The owner is very helpful. When the thermostat of the shower broke we had a new one in two hours. Is that service?!
Asciano has is own train station. So you don’t need a car.
I think we will comeback in April or September.

We had a wonderful staying in Giordano's tower. The area of "Crete Senesi" is just astonishing and people in Asciano are extremely welcoming. The tower itself is built on 3 floors with quite steep stairs, but if you are looking for a suggestive italian middle ages experience this is your best bet. Probably this is not a "total comfort" location, but the unique romantic atmosphere is well worth the price.

Roberto, the owner, is one of the nicest person, he has been extremely kind. If you have any issue ask him and he will bend over backwards to help.

Worth visiting nearby locations: Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza and of course Siena.

Last month we went for the fourth time to the Torre Giordano in Asciano. We really like to comeback to this special place: the ancient house is well restored and has a roof from which you can see the landscape as well as the roofs of Asciano. There is a well equiped kitchen. To have a meal on the roof is really an experience! The owners are friendly and helpful. The posibilities of visiting places of cultural interest are many: by train you get easy to Siena and Florence. The town is quiet and still authentic.

On the plus side, the tower is part of an old wall that used to enclose Asciano, which is very cool. It has a rooftop terrace that overlooks the town, and it has been renovated with modern appliances and features. However, all of these pluses were cancelled out by the grime and the smell. Everything in it was mucky -- as if it had been used for several months without someone taking a clean cloth to it. The smell came partly from the general grime and partly from the mould that is flourishing in the bathroom. We kept the bathroom fan running 24/7 just to make the smell tolerable. Finally, there were little green bugs that flew in whenever we opened a window to air out the place because there are no screens. Hundreds of them. They like to hide in your clean underwear to surprise you when you put them on. At 500 euros a week, this place is no bargain.

When we returned home, we emailed the agency that rented us this place to advise them of the problems we had experienced. The agent, Giuseppe Bertini, who works for Datitour or Tuscany Rent (both names appear on his email) contacted the owner who, not surprisingly, denied that it was dirty or that the bathroom was mouldy. (He acknowledged the bugs but didn't seem to feel that they warranted window screens). The owner said we should have told him that we had a problem; he speaks zero English or French, our two languages. As far as the agency was concerned, the owner's response meant there was no problem. So, not only would we not recommend this accomodation, we wouldn't recommend the rental agency either.
