I LOVE Villa Pitiana and was absolutely delighted with every part of our stay. The house is grand, beautiful, and enormous with the best chandeliers I have ever seen. Faded grandeur with the right mix of charm, tranquility and cool. Its high up in the hills with breathtaking views and so relaxing. I didn't want to leave. We had a self-catering apartment for one night (for us and two young children) and it was perfect. Spotlessly clean, crisp white sheets, air con, split level with mezzanine, separate bedroom and 2 bathrooms. Much larger than I was expecting when I booked a 'Standard' family room. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and hope to return. Our kids (4 and 2) loved the pool and exploring the grounds and maze.

It far exceeded my expectations after seeing some less positive reviews of Trip Advisor. Don't let them put you off – its a real gem.

We had 2 classic rooms (28 and 27) on the second floor. There is a small lift. The rooms were spacious, clean, had a safe, minibar and comfortable beds (twin beds put together but we had no problem with gaps opening between them). Spacious bathroom too with shower over bath so you had to handhold as no shower curtain. Pool is outdoors, relatively large as hotel pools go but the water was not that warm, ok if you kept moving. There are a lot of cracked tiles around the pool (not in it though). Towels are provided at reception and there are sun loungers, a few deck chairs and umbrellas available. The grounds are lovely and the views over the surrounding countryside stunning. The bar is often only manned in the evening so if no one is there just go to reception and ask and they will send someone. Lunch is served from the bar for 2.5 hours until about 2pm, eg. sandwiches, pizza. We ate in the restaurant twice, having the Florentine T-bone steak once which is shown to you before cooking and then the chef comes out and carves it in front of you, a nice experience. The food is a generous portion size. My husband and I had the Tuscan menu on the first occasion and we were very full by the end of the meal. Other reviewers have said they found the restaurant expensive but for what you get and the quality of the food, I think you pay a fair price given you are in Italy. Wifi is available only in the main lobby room and is often slow. There are other eating places a short distance away and we ate several times in Il Cacciatore, a pizzeria, 5 minutes drive away or 20 minutes walk in the village of Donnini down the hill.
We think having a car is necessary if you are going to stay here. There is a train station in S. Ellero about 6 km away but when we asked about getting a taxi to this station the hotel reception staff told us we would need to book it well in advance as it takes at least half an hour and would cost 30 euros to the station. So we drove to Florence on the occasions we went to the city. It would be very helpful if the hotel were to run a shuttle bus to the rail station.
This is a charming hotel in an attractive historical building.
Our only negative comment is that my daughter sent e-mails to them prior to our arrival asking about transport to the hotel from the Florence airport and wine tastings that they say they arrange and never got a response to any of them.

This was one of our highlights stay of our 5 week holiday in Italy .
Not everything has to be luxury as some people think . This place has so much charm . Firstly it is in the country which we loved and with this comes the internet that was not always up to speed and maybe a few less staff that you would find in the big hotels .
The gardens and pool area we though were very relaxing . May be not the most manicured area around the pool but it was lovely soaking up the sun and being in the lovely country air .
But for all these few things did not distract from a beautiful 5 days .
We has a self contained suite in the oldest part so made our own breakfast and even made a lovely past meal one night . Good little kitchen .Also had use of washer and drier which was very welcome .
Staff very helpful . Did not need large staff during day as every one is usually out and about .
My suggestion is hire a car from Florence and use this for getting to train and driving around the beautiful country side.Take your own GPS with local Italian maps loaded as they do not always have them in hire cars . Then your set to drive which is not difficult to do as long as you know where your going !!!
Also visit the designer town of Lecchio for great brands outlet shops which is nearby .

Room Tip: Self contained if your staying a few days . Lovely and quiet and lots if room

First of all, after the views of this property you will be spoiled for any other views in tuscany. I'm not sure it gets better than this, it is a true stunning postcard come to life. So it's about 30 to 40 minutes outside of Florence in a tiny town. You can go the freeway or the scenic way into Florence and we did both. It's also a good base for other hill town exploration and the outlet malls. We used it as a base to explore tuscany and also go into Florence many days.

The building itself is wonderful and full of history and charm. I will say it felt in need of some updating and a good scrub. My kids loved going on a hike around the property. The pool area was okay but not that inviting or clean feeling. The restaurant is excellent for dinner though a bit pricey more of a destination dinner for locals or those just checking in. The breakfast buffet was nice and had most things you could want in a cold buffet. Both take place in the lovely dining room with wonderful views to enjoy while you eat.

The rooms vary, but we had three and i was unhappy with the lack of good air conditioning in our 'suite' as the second floor was really hot even with a fan they put in. I didn't love the bathroom either, and felt the furniture was dusty and needed updating. That said, for the view and other amenities of the property this may not matter to you. My kids loved their rooms and i was just expecting a little more lux accommodations like a Torre del Bellasquardo than this place provides.

They also seem very understaffed. They had excellent people there but not enough of them. Many times you couldn't find folks at the bar etc. The wi fi is the biggest issue i discussed with many guests that were all trying to get wi fi to work in the main room and a tiny computer room that always had some kitchen staffer sitting at, so we couldn't even get to it some nights. I didn't get to do as much prep on the next day's restaurants, food, and cities because the wi fi and connections were so bad and spotty i would give up sitting in the lobby trying to get to one site.

While i understand huge old stone walls aren't going to be conducive to wi fi and it's also up a big hill and above sea level, the wi fi makes a big difference to some of us trying to organize ourselves and the next part of our journeys, airlines, trains, etc. I would not call this a four star experience, but i would call it a great place on many levels as long as you know what you are getting.

This hotel is absolutely lovely. Located in the hills in Tuscany you couldnt hope to find anywhere better the room we had was at the front and didn't have a view of the hills but it was large with the bed on a mezzanine level above. The rooms are really large and airy and were very cool at night. The breakfast was good and the staff lovely. It is perfectly located for Florence, Chianti and Sienna. We are booking our holiday in the Italian lakes and Milan right now and we are looking for "another villa pitiana" as the charm and out of the way location is great. The hotel sells its own olive oil and wine which are great too. One thing to note was the pool was freezing cold even on boiling hot days as it is very very deep and not really maintained well this is the only let down.

My husband and I recent went here for our honeymoon. We were stunned by the beautiful Villa and the amazing views of the Tuscany hills from our bedroom window. The staff were very friendly and the morning buffet was very nice, but the restaurant was a bit disappointing for evening meals as we thought it was a little bit pricey. Donnini has a very good Pizza restaurant which is great value. We recommend you find out the bus times and use them from Donnini to get to the local train station as the taxi's have to come a long way and charge a lot for what is really just a short journey. From the train station we had wonderful trips to Florence, Rome and Pisa. All in all a fabulous location for a honeymoon!!!!

Room Tip: We were on the top floor looking out towards the swimming pool and the view was amazing. Very quiet...
