“Hugely impressive piazza”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

The Piazza Pio II boasts an amazing ensemble of buildings that would grace a major city, and yet Pienza is a very small hill-top town. Its renaissance cathedral and various palazzi - particularly the Palazzo Piccolomini - form a harmonious whole, but ideally need more space to show themselves off. The guided tours of the Palazzo Piccolomini are a must - its loggia and garden with stunning views offer a perfect marriage of nature and art.

“A most charming hilltop village in Tuscany”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Pienza is a delight to visit. Among the hilltop towns of Tuscany, for me this one felt like it had the most character, being small enough to be manageable, yet large enough to be interesting. What is most striking besides the architecture typical of this type of Tuscan town, is the notable presence of floral plantings everywhere. The town is simply prettier and more charming than many of its neighboring villages. The approach is dramatic, first a glorious stretch of Tuscan countryside through the Val D'Orcia, and then a winding and rising road towards the hilltop town. The views of the surrounding vistas are breathtaking and worth the ride alone. The town also possesses some lovely shops and restaurants, as well as a Cathedral and some other "official" structures. As the apparent home of pecorino cheese, cheese shops and other food emporiums abound as well.
