“Lovely place!”
Reviewed 9 December 2010

I was surprised by how spacious our double room was, with an adjacent breakfast room. We slept well in the comfortable bed and enjoyed the nice hot shower. Pienza is quite small, so our room was a short walk from the bus stop and everything we wanted to see in town. The decor was charming and everything was perfectly clean. Breakfast was two yogurts left in the small room refrigerator and some shrink-wrapped pastries and jelly. There was an espresso machine for our use by the check in area--after some tries I got it to work. The wifi was free. We paid 65 euros for one night through Booking.com. I'd be happy to return!

My wife and just stayed four nights at Giardino Segreto based on Tripadvisor reviews and it everything positive that was reviewed. The room was nice, clean, very roomy with a second sitting area and the bathroom was quite large for Europe. The included breakfast was a little skimpy, but a short walk away were several places to get croissants and there is a very nice espresso maker on the first floor. We knew that parking was not included and we found a free lot a short walk down the hill. It was often full, but if we waited a few minutes, someone always was along to leave and give us a spot.

PIenza is a wonderful medieval city which was fun to stay in and to use as a base to visit the surrounding countryside. We visited Sienna, Montepulciano, Montalcino, and St. Antimo.

Based on the reviews I knew Rosella would not speak English and we got along fine. Someone said that she is a prima donna, but we just found her to be Italian.

As the other reviews said, if you are somewhat independent, you will love this place. If you are looking for a concierge and need lots of support and service, you probably want a hotel with English speaking staff. And you will pay lots more.

There are several excellent restaurants close by including the absolute gem La Buca di Enea and also Tratoria la Cucina di Fiorella.

High speed wireless was included and it worked like a champ.

I just came back from two delightful weeks at Il Giardino Secreto. It was exactly what we were looking for: a home base to explore Val d’Orcia and it fit perfectly. From the beginning we knew that it was not a hotel, but an apartment building, and therefore no concierge at all. However, Rossella was there every morning and afternoon and we could ask for supplies for our breakfast (yogurt, jelly, toast, instant coffee, muffins etc). There are many shops and two grocery stores nearby so we could come home at the end of the day, shop, cook and sit outside in the garden and sip a bottle of great wine…Rossella was very friendly and helpful and despite the fact that she only speaks Italian, we were able to communicate pretty well. We stayed at Il Corbezollo and the apartment was cozy, spacious, clean, with a nice shower. I am already planning to go back next year.

Pienza was a wonderful town to stay in! You probably could find lodging with the same amount of charm as Il Giardino and with much better service. The owner was difficult to contact and not very friendly or helpful when we checked in; our interactions were moderately more positive with her over the next couple days. But as other reviewers said, for the price, this was a great choice if you are independent and not needing a lot of travel advice or assistance during your stay. The apartments are small but clean and the garden is cute and full of spaces to relax (tables, benches, grass, even a hammock!). The bathroom was tiny and could probably use an update; but it was clean. There is no A/C. Breakfast was minimal--packaged crackers/toast and juice/instant coffee. The bed and linens were very comfortable. But again, for the price I'm not complaining! You spend most of your time wandering around beautiful Pienza and enjoying Tuscany anyway!

Pienza is a great base for exploring southern Tuscany and northern Umbria. My older husband w/joint problems appreciated that it's flat! Also interesting, very pretty, very charming. We loved our stay at this guesthouse. We were in the tiny studio, which for 2 people requires a bit of choreography to stay out of each others way, but we spent very little time in the room, so that was fine. The bedroom is a loft. Apt very clean and functional. You should be able to cope with limited office hours and the manager, Rosella, who is very helpful but also monolingual. The wireless internet only worked if I sat in a particular spot in the garden.

We booked Il Giardino Segreto based on TA reviews and the amazing price. I feel the price was worth it, however looking back I wish we stayed somewhere else. First of all, there are "office hours." You can't check in before 4pm and you MUST check out by 10am. Out of the 7 cities we called home over a 3 week time frame, we didn't find this to be the case anywhere else! Rosella speaks no English so be ready to nod your head a lot. She also doesn't slow her Italian down. She is definitely a diva and doesn't have any compassion for travelers staying at her place.

Side story: We left our camera charger and one adapter plugged into the wall and realized when we arrived in Minori. Our hosts in Minori (who were FABULOUS - Agriturismo Villa Maria), called Rosella who gave them the 20 question game about who we were, what we looked like, and even asked, "oh it's the young American couple and the man is attractive, right?" RUDE! It was only after this ODD conversation that she remembered she had found our items plugged into the wall, but unfortunately was unable to forward them to our other locations in Italy, or send them back to the US for us because previous travelers didn't reimburse her shipping costs! We offered to pay with a credit card, she stopped answering calls, said she had to go to a funeral and was unavailable, long story short, it was ridiculous and I got an email 2 days ago from Minori hosts saying it appeared at their place (this is over 2 weeks later). It was just ODD.

I definitely would not stay here again because we found it to be the opposite of the awesome Italian hospitality we received in EVERY other location we stayed. Pienza is a beautiful place to do a day trip, but there isn't enough to do there to spend multiple days.

If you do stay here the restaurant right next door is amazing! They had some kind of appetizer that

We've just returned (my wife and I) from a 4-night long stay in Giardino Segreto.
Rosella, the owner, has created a small paradise in the very heart of Pienza.A small,
but very well kept garden, surrounded by apartments with immediate access to the
garden.
We stayed in Biancospino(aprtm for 2 persons-ground level).Spacius kitchen, with everything you might need, big fire-place and TV.Bedroom with double bed, warmly decorated with wooden furniture and window facing the garden. Finally the bath, with entrance from the bedroom.
Usually in holiday apartments (at least in my experience) don't serve breakfast. But in
that case, there was a full disk with enough and varius stuff:varius kind of coffee and tea,
honey, jum, toast, cake, juice, etc. to enjoy them during our whole stay.Some...steps away
there are 2 bakeries and less than 200m away a big store(super market).
And just around the corner of the building(via de la Buca,if I'm right) there is a small
restaurant with the most delicius creps ever!!!
There is not daily cleaning service(usual and expected so).Rosella is very kind and
helpful. And although doesn't speak English,it's easy to understand the basic.
By the time we were leaving she gave us a 'Rosso'(local wine) as a gift!!!
The garden is beautiful and you can enjoy your breakfast, find a shade to relax during noon,or enjoy the aromas of the evening.Pienza is the jasminus village. You can see
and smell jasmines almost everyway. And,also, you can enjoy some giantic orchid-
gigaflores!!!
There is a free parking, just on the main road, 30m away from the garden-door of
Giardino Segreto. The places in front of the garden-door is for the locals.50m away
there is a parking with payment and finally opposite of the super market,I mentioned
before, there is big parking place for free.
The panorama of the Southern side of Pienza (just behind the popish church) is
amazing.Enjoy it without the "mornin visitors" just before sunset......
Near Pienza there are a lot of thermal sources. We visited Bagno Vignoni(15Km) non-
sulfated,no smell and Bagni San Filippo(30Km) sulfated, with smell. Both of them are
tiny villages and you can choose to swim either in a hotel pool with a small cost,or in
the nature for free.
Pienza is the ideal base to explore Southern Tuscany(the most unspoiled part of
Tuscany)avoiding crowds.Additionally,is situated in a reasonable,for a daily trip,
distance from cities with great interest such as Siena,Orvieto,Perugia and Assisi.
And of course if you decide to stay in Pienza,Giardino Segreto is the perfect choise!!!
