“A Hotel to Avoid”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We spent the month of June traveling around Italy with another couple, and staying in many B&B's and hotels; a joyous experience in every respect. PItigliano is a fascinating town with a haunting history and intriguing atmosphere; well worth a visit. This hotel, however, is another story.

We had reserved Albergo Guastini, initially intending to stay 2 nights and explore the surrounding Estruscan region. However, our first night's stay was unpleasant to say the least, so we left early. The hotel is extremely tired in every respect, and shows every sign of a place which needs a major overhaul or a complete shut-down.

Our room was extremely small (not unusual; we deal with that often), but also had a bad odor emanating from the bathroom when we returned at night; rather like a cesspool odor. There was no AC, and (again typical) no screens. We kept the windows open, given the smell, and during the night a bat flew into our room which ended our sleep. Our friends were up all night too, unable to sleep in their uncomfortable bed with broken springs.

Having paid an extra 7 Euros for a hotel breakfast, and expecting the usual lovely feast, we were disappointed with paltry offerings of some yoghurt, cereal, and burnt toast (no cornetti, pastry, or fresh fruit!).

The management was okay with us leaving after one night - I think they know there are problems.

It appeared that we two couples were the only guests in the hotel, and now I understand why it is not heavily booked. Perhaps the family is deciding to close the hotel; they give every indication of no interest in maintaining it.

Stayed here with my wife, sister and husband. Albergo Guastino is an old style hotel located near the entrance to Pitigliano's old town-in fact, it is walking distance away. Its location is the best feature of the hotel. We had a room with a wonderful view of the old town particularly at night. However, the room itself was quite basic, and the bathroom was not any different. We had booked half board--so we had breakfast and dinner at Albergo Guastini. The food at both meals was very good--not great, but definitely above average. Our visit to the old town was extremely enjoyable, particularly the old synagogue which, in our minds, was the highlight of the old town. Pitigliano has an old Jewish heritage that we found quite fascinating. We had picked Pitigliano to stay at as it was only a little over an hour away from Civitavecchia where we were catching a cruise ship. Again, Pitigliano's location and Albergo Guastini were just what we needed.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room with a view of the old town.

We have been there off season. Located at the center of the town, right by the old city. The parking is near the hotel (70 m). The staff was nice, the breakfast was good. Wifi in the room. We didn't like the "towels" in the bathroom (a piece of hard fabric).

A visit to Pitigliano is a very worthwhile experience and staying a night or two in the old part of town only makes it so much more worthwhile. To experience this one has to make do with the local accommodation on offer and so our group of four couples chose to stay in the Albergo Guastini hotel right at the entrance to the old part of town.
We had no complaints nor anything to write home about. Good, basic and spotlessly clean rooms were enjoyed by all during our two nights although those on the third floor suffered from poor water pressure when showering. Breakfasts were good and offered a wide range of choices although we were lucky that our group contained previous visitors who were able to explain how best to combine the various choices on offer - for instance the fresh ricotta cheese goes on top of the jam which you first spread generously on the local bread.
In summary an good clean, unpretentious hotel that covers all the basic needs.

I stayed here for two nights and found the hotel to be pretty basic. Unfortunately we did not have one of the rooms with a view which was a shame in such a beautiful setting. The breakfast was the bare minimum - some cereal and milk, cakes, bread and spreads. It was a shame to not get any fruit. Staff were reasonably helpful, though we did find the hotel manager smoking in the kitchen and at the hotel desk when we looked for him to pay (surrounded by no smoking signs!). The free wifi is a bonus, though the signal strength was not so strong.

We spent one night in a superior room. The hotel was clean, well located and good value. It is somewhat basic but has everything you need. Good wifi access. The breakfast is also basic but offers good choices. I would stay again. The only reason I didn't give more stars is that there wasn't any "extras" or special touches that made it stand out for me. There wasn't elevator access to the room I stayed in.

Stayed for one night in this charming hotel in mid September. It was much nicer than we expected, with a lovely room overlooking the immense cliff setting of the town. Breakfast was very generous and delicious. Room was spotlessly clean, bed comfortable, bathroom was spacious, clean. The location is ideal for access to and from the hotel. After many years traveling in Italy, we were pleasantly surprised...much nicer than their website shows!
