We spent the month of June traveling around Italy with another couple, and staying in many B&B's and hotels; a joyous experience in every respect. PItigliano is a fascinating town with a haunting history and intriguing atmosphere; well worth a visit. This hotel, however, is another story.
We had reserved Albergo Guastini, initially intending to stay 2 nights and explore the surrounding Estruscan region. However, our first night's stay was unpleasant to say the least, so we left early. The hotel is extremely tired in every respect, and shows every sign of a place which needs a major overhaul or a complete shut-down.
Our room was extremely small (not unusual; we deal with that often), but also had a bad odor emanating from the bathroom when we returned at night; rather like a cesspool odor. There was no AC, and (again typical) no screens. We kept the windows open, given the smell, and during the night a bat flew into our room which ended our sleep. Our friends were up all night too, unable to sleep in their uncomfortable bed with broken springs.
Having paid an extra 7 Euros for a hotel breakfast, and expecting the usual lovely feast, we were disappointed with paltry offerings of some yoghurt, cereal, and burnt toast (no cornetti, pastry, or fresh fruit!).
The management was okay with us leaving after one night - I think they know there are problems.
It appeared that we two couples were the only guests in the hotel, and now I understand why it is not heavily booked. Perhaps the family is deciding to close the hotel; they give every indication of no interest in maintaining it.
