“You just have to try this place”
Reviewed 6 June 2012

This restaurant is reknown for miles around by the locals but you would never guess it from the outside. It is essentially a roadside caff, with lots of parking and plenty of outside seating areas. It is the food they all come for, in particular torta a testo, a kind of pitta bread which is stuffed with sausage, or salami, or cream cheese, or roasted vegatables, or any combination of the above. They also do great fries and chops etc. Totally low key, unpreposssessing place but totally amazing food at great prices. Worth a detour

“Something different on the Lago”
Reviewed 31 May 2012

It looks like a truck stop for a quick cheap bite and it is but it also provides good quality food. To order is a small challenge, take a number & figure out what to try, tip toeing to see what's on offer. Despite the crowd within minutes you will have your tray of food. A raging wood fire heats the popular torta 'bread' which is stuffed with various fillings. We tried the sausage & spinach combo. The huge outdoor eating area is great with a good view of the lake. Many locals frequent this spot which is testament to the quality of the food.

“Low cost fast traditional food”
Reviewed 29 April 2012 via mobile

If you are near there this place is a must!
Traditional heavy food, good value for money. Similar to a "fraschetta".
Ideal for a good of friends.

“Great scene! Fantastic view! Local hangout!”
Reviewed 24 January 2012

This is our favorite local hangout located just beside the south bank of Lago Trasimeno. We try to time our arrival so that we can set on their huge outdoor terrace and watch the sunset fireworks as it sets over Castiglione del Lago. To say that this is a real scene is not enough. Grab a number, watch and wait, crowd up to the counter then point and point and point some more: "Lago" is nicely fried little lake fish; "Mare" is a mix of shrimp and calamari lightly breaded and fried; endless choices of seasonal vegetable. Great torta al testo with an array of fillings, you can see them cooking the tortas on the stone testo beside the roaring fire. A family joint, everyone is there from aging papa bussing the tables, to mama and her boys and their wives cooking away. Love this place. No tourists, all locals. Our guests from L'Antica Vetreria are amazed to see the bill at the end, thinking there must be a mistake, for how can you feed eleven people food and wine for only fifty euro!!!! We come here so often there is no appropriate date for visit....say weekly in the summer since 2008.

“Authentic "torta al testo"”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

La torta della Maria è la più buona che ci sia!
Great simple hearty food. Avoid the fried stuff and go for the traditiona "torta al testo", a yeast-free flat bread which can be filled with anything you want, from cheese and veg to sausages or cold meats. A must if you are in the area!
