Visited Porto Moniz during a bus tour of the west of the island. The weather had been wet and misty over the high ground and was overcast and cool when we reached the coast, but my friend and I decided that the lovely clear water was too tempting to miss! Certainly it was chilly when we went in, but we soon acclimatised and had a lovely swim for ten minutes or so - it was the most fantastic experience. The crashing waves in the background added to the feeling of exhiliration, and its a swim we'll both remember for a long time. Note - rocks were very slippy!

our Singing group came by Coach to Porto Moniz, some walked on the track a short drive away & some swam, sampled good ice cream & swam again and again. Once out of the Pool complex we could potter over to some typical souvenir shops and sit outside for tea or coffee. I walked up the hill to another tourist facility where you could see the Lava Pools in ACTION. Our day was hot and relatively calm but when the swell comes over the barrier you certainly feel the force of the sea. The only drawback that I hesitate to mention is that just a few instructions in English would help.
I'll be back in May & do my best to arrange another visit it was so exhilarating.

Re-visited in January after being here in September, what a difference, still beautiful. The seas were wild which gave a completely different outlook to the vista but still wonderful. A must see, when in Madeira.

That is just beautiful! We were there in November, and the sea was quite stormy. Although didn't get an opportunity to swim, but the place is so beautiful that one should not miss it! Take time to walk along the coastline and see all the pools - it's definitely worth it!
