“not a good hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2006

The hotel is very poorly run with less than helpful staff. The restaurant serves poor quality food in a dark dingy canteen.
If you want to go out for food be prepared for a long walk, the hotel is not in a good location
The lifts break down all the time, when this happened to us the emergency alarm was ignored until I pushed the doors opened and shouted for assistance. The lift was then left in service to trap more people.

On arrival Hotel looked ok from the outside. Bar and reception area looked basic. Room was ok but view from balcony was that of a building site.

Restaurant resembled a works canteen if that's not an insult to works canteens. Food was poor.

After 4 days we moved out to the Playa Sol

Grand Looking hotel externally but reception resembles a Jailhouse in the wildwest.
Reception staff helpful, but management poor . Rooms good especially if pool view.

Excellent large pool situated within large garden area adjacent to gravel beach (bring walking boots) Promenade approx. five miles long and leave an hour to walk to the centre of Roquetas De Mar. We travelled by Taxi every night approx 7 euros to Mediterrean Ave in centre of tourist area which is very pleasant and family oriented.

However thre dining room is poorly decorated and the food is even worse of a poor quality and variety. breakfast has lukewarm coffe pots covered in a cloth and the cooked breakfast is unedible. No fresh fruit jucie just one bowl of tinned fruit with a few flies daily for flavour.

Evening meals are basic and not what you would expect of a four star so a new chef is definately required. Unfortunately there is no where in the immediate area to eat as the entire area is like a building site around the hotel.

On arrival at the hotel there was no doubt that the hotel had the "Wow" factor. It looked like (as the kids described) Ali Baba's Palace!!

I have to say that there were 26 in our party, with a total of 11 rooms, and it was the quickest check-in I have ever experienced so full marks to the reception staff as this has been most time consuming in the past. The only downside was that I e-mailed the hotel direct to warn them of our arrival and in plenty of time with the request that our rooms were as close together as possible - this didn't work but it really didn't matter at the end of the day.

The Rooms
The rooms were undoubtedly superior and of 4 star quality. They had huge beds, dark wood/wicker furniture, lovely new and very clean bathrooms, gorgeous tiled floors. Try and get a sea view if you can as the sunrise is unbelievable in Almeria. In the room you will find a hairdryer, a fridge which is most useful, and a free safety deposit box which is activitated by using your room key card and entering a PIN so no worrying about losing the safe key! The rooms were cleaned everyday and towels were also changed daily. A first rate maid service. I don't think the air con was working as it only blowed out hot air - perhaps because of the time of year?

The Food
Now for the not so good part - the food. It really wasn't 4* quality. There wasn't very much variety, the chips were cold, most of it didn't look edible. The only things my kids would eat was the bread. If you like an English breakfast - well forget it! It was either scrambled egg which was cold, or hard boiled eggs with a different type of spanish sausage every day. Bacon was only offered once in the 8 days we were there which was a shame. The orange juice isn't fresh. As for pastries - there were only cakes and no croissants unfortunately. Also expect a punch up at the toasting machine - The Spanish pensioners love to push in and take your toast so beware!
For a typical breakfast you will find, breads and rolls, cereals like cornflakes & musli, jams, fruit salad - not fresh, yoghurt (not in tubs) eggs and sausages as mentioned above, cakes and biscuits, teas or coffee. This is the same everyday.
For a typical Dinner you'll find soup of the day, breads, salads, meat (mainly veal) and fish, one type of potato, a pasta and sauce dish, little tubs of ice cream, cakes - the same as breakfast, & crème caramel. For the kids it's cold chips and pizza only. All 26 of us didn't think that this was 4* quality and so most of the party ate out. I on the other hand put up with it as we got such a good deal.

The Pool Area
Lots of sunbeds, lovely and clean, great pool but it's not heated so it was too cold to swim in during April. There's a jacuzzi area and a fountain - quite spectacular. Unfortunately the pool/snack bar area was closed so there was nowhere locally to have lunch. We found out that there were a stack of lovely thick cushions for the sunbeds in one of the huts. On enquiring we found out we had to pay 3 euros each per day for the hire. They did make sunbathing a more relaxing experience! Another downer was that the Indoor Pool was closed which was a shame as the main pool was f-r-r-reezing! There is also a gym at the hotel but the equipment is a bit dated.

Entertainment
There were two girls who looked after the daytime entertainment and I have to say they were excellent. Unfortunately entertainment was limited and geared towards the Spanish. But we did have a go at rifle shooting, patanca, and tiki-tiki. Evening entertainment - forget it - it's all ballroom and for the elderly Spanish customers only. There was a good magic show while we were there and we worked hard to persuade the "girls" to put on "Cha cha slide" during the interval!

So all in all we had a good time here. The Gran Plaza shopping centre is about 10 mins walking distance from the hotel. It's full of lovely designer shops and restaurants, even a Burger King! There's also a Bowling Alley - which we went to a couple of times. Not far from the hotel is the Roquetas Karting - Go-Kart track which cost 6 euros by cab and is well worth a visit if you want something different to do. Going into the centre of Roquetas by cab will also cost 6 euros - try the English M25 bar which is where we went to eat most of the time! I would go back but probably on a bed and breakfast basis only.

Just got back Saturday 19th November after 1 week, yes out of season I know.

Hotel room ok, room cleaning very efficient, ranked Highly (left a good tip).

Environment ok, Gym poor for the more active people, as running machine has seen better days (unstable/rickety).

Swimming pool (internal) fine nice and no cold shock when entering water.

Beach close, not sandy, very tiny pebbles , big sand, no sand sticking to feet.

Lots of local idiots, on small loud mini bikes which needed picking off by someone with good aiming skills!!.

Restaurant was a complete disaster.
If you like hot food, forget it, it will be stewed, overdone and tasteless. I would advise booking bed only and sorting yourself out elsewhere for grub.

A four star hotel, that serves orange squash instead of real Orange juice (especially in SPAIN) for breakfast... come on!!.
(we took our own from the local supermarket to breakfast most mornings).

If you like meat for breakfast, you will commonly get Cold Salami slices, and maybe luke warm hot dog sausages, watch out for the either underdone german style sausages or overdone ones, again luke warm.
Never saw any bacon, however one English new arrival said he had some on Saturday......

I recommend the comedia restaurant just down the road as we tried it last Friday, 30-35.00 each for a really tasty/varied menu.

HOTEL COLONIAL MAR ROQUETAS DE MAR, just returned from this hotel first impression very palatial don,t be fooled, restaurant is worse than a school canteen, food although varied choice SAME every day.Staff very hostile to English, particularly in the bar. This hotel is 4km out of resort centre with nothing but building sites surrounding it therefore a car is essential. We certainly NEVER return to this hotel again.
