“Great family hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

Excellent friendly family hotel with great staff, quiet and clean rooms and a very rich and yummy breakfast. This hotel was a great value and very conveniently located in the center of Formigal, close to restaurants and the bus to go to the ski lifts.

In the lobby, there is a ski locker room for storing equipment, and there is also access to the hotel to drop off and pick up luggage. There is also information available about the local restaurants in the lobby. They also have a game room, but we were too tired after skiing to make good use of it.

Hotel Tirol is a fine family hotel that provides excellent value for money in Formigal. There is a very homely bar and salon with a terrace that has splendid views across the ski resort and down the valley towards Panticosa. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and in keeping with the requirements of a ski resort. The front rooms of the hotel has panoramic views of the mountains.
Breakfast is well provided and the buffet is replenished so that there is always a full range of food throughout the breakfast period. Although there is no evening meal, there are restaurants and bars very close by.
The hotel is staffed by excellent people, especially Natacha who was very helpful and friendly.
There is private parking outside the hotel and a secure ski store for equipment.
Altogether, this is a lovely hotel and we enjoyed our experience and stay here. For a ski resort hotel, we couldn´t fault it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view towards the mountains and better still one with a balcony

We stayed at the Hotel Tirol, a basic 2 star which was adequate. Plenty free parking on both sides of the hotel. Free wifi which only worked on the ground floor, despite several attempts by the owner to get it to work upstairs.

We had seen a rate on booking.com for 55 euros per night but were told that the room was 60 a night. When we mentioned the price on Booking they gave us the room for the same price. The first room offered smelt of old cigarettes so we were offered a better room with mountain views (room 206). This was warm, clean and fabulous views. No hairdryer so we asked at reception. They had 4 to loan out, so we were told we had to collect it as needed, but when we asked the owner later she just let us take one. It would be a small investment for them to buy enough for each room and charge a deposit on them.

The breakfast was good with a reasonable selection of breads, pastries, hams, cream cheese, jams etc. toast, juice and coffee. There was a lounge with tv, pool and games room and a nice bar area with reasonably priced drinks.

The staff and owners were friendly and helpful, giving some good advice about the resort.

Prior to arriving we had read reviews about the hotel and one of them mentioned the owner smoking a cigar in the hotel and a dog and cat roaming around. When I checked in I mentioned this to the receptionist, particularly as it is illegal to smoke in the public areas. During our stay we did not see him or any one else smoking inside. However, there was a large dog let loose which kept pestering customers, sniffing at them and jumping up at the doors etc. the door to the kitchen from the dining area and through the bar had swing hinges, so the dog and cat wandered into the kitchen at free will. At breakfast the cat sat on the dining room chairs, and at one point a family entered who were clearly frightened of cats. I lifted the cat off the chair and put it out of the room. This is not hygienic or appropriate for a hotel. When the dog was shut in the family area it barked for attention.

It's definitely a basic, no frills hotel and you get what you pay for. Apart from the animal situation, the hotel was value for money and the location ideal, just a few steps from the ski bus and the bars and restaurants. We would only stay there again if the animals were not in the public areas at all. Other improvements needed are hairdryers in the rooms and radiators that can be thermostatically controlled in the room.

Room Tip: Ask foir rooms 01 to 07 on every floor for mountain views.

Our experience was almost without snow........ but fortunately the hotel is very nice, close to the restaurants, rental ski and bus for ski stations. The staff is really kind and available for needs. Breakfast good.

With the Tirol, what you see is what you get. It doesn't pretend to be more than what it says it is; a decent, clean, family-run hotel smack-dab in the middle of the Formigal 'urbanizacion' about 1km from the lifts. If you're looking for a fancy, luxurious room after a day of skiing, look elsewhere. If all you need is a clean room, well-functioning heat and hot water, a solid Spanish-style breakfast, then Hotel Tirol is a good bet. The family owners are around all day to make sure your stay is satisfactory. We found our first room to smell horribly of smoke and they switched us no problem. Ask for rooms (number 01 through 07) on the south side for good views of the mountains. Free ample parking, stumbling distance to all the bars, 100 meters from the free shuttle to the ski area. Further pluses are free ski storage, free Wifi and the price is nice - our weekend rate was half of the other hotels at Formigal.
