Before assuming that I am just a miserable bad customer, please look at my other reviews for hotels and restaurants which are on the whole extremely positive. We stay in a variety of places and feel that our comments below are justified.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have a very enjoyable stay in this hotel at all. The day before we were due to arrive I had a voicemail saying that there was “technical fault” and they didn’t have a double for us was would we be ok with a single or twin. I called them back when I could a few hours later and they said the problem had been dealt with and the room was all ok as it was just a problem with plumbing. Why hadn’t they bothered to call me to tell me this and leave me to call them back? You would think after this, they would ensure our room was in good shape.

During our stay there were many things wrong with our room;
1) The carpets were horribly stained, filthy and very well worn
2) There was no lock on the bathroom door and there had quite clearly been before
3) The bedroom door was broken and took real shoulder shoving to open – even the man who took us to the room struggled
4) The pillows had stains on them and there was only three pillows and none in the cupboard
5) We woke up each morning with very bad backs and covered in bites on our legs and arms
6) The shower took 10 mins to warm up and the power was pathetic – very difficult to wash hair well.
7) The TV barely worked and the remote was filthy
8) There were receipts and plastic in the radiator, biscuit packets under the bed and loose maltesears and sweets packets behind the bedside table.
9) Bedside lamp didn’t work – probably because it is covered in filth and dust!
10) There was no guest information in the room whatsoever – no map of town, time of check out, no phone or reception number, no time for breakfast etc.
11) Mirrors although pretty are entirely unusable and unstable.
12) There was only one toilet roll provided – even after our room was “cleaned” on second morning and we were clearly down to the last few sheets it was not replaced.
13) The fan in the bathroom (which went on every time you went in or had the light on) is deafening and you could hear the fans in the other rooms too.
14) Very bad night sleeps – could hear doors banging, neighbours chatting or coughing, engines running outside in the early mornings (vans delivering to the hotel!) constant traffic on road
15) breakfast tasted like tinned food – mushrooms etc.
16) Overall poor decor – holes in walls and bad finishes
17) There was one tiny main room light but couldn't have curtains open as overlooked
18) No wifi?

Something that is key in the hotel business is customer service and this hotel massively lacked this. We found ourselves feeling stupid and a hassle. At breakfast on the first morning we felt very neglected and ignored. It was quite clear we didn’t know whether we were to sit or wait and waited at the stand by the door as we could see the waitress coming. The waitress walked past us four times ignoring us despite us trying to get her attention. We sat ourselves in the end (on the last day – we had a very attentive waitress). The man on reception when we arrived also didn’t really explain anything fully – just made us fill in details and make us follow him. He didn’t really welcome us at all. (The man on check out was very nice!)

There is a reason this place was the last place with spaces when we booked late. It is laughable that this hotel was REDUCED to £75. The price of this place is no more than £50 a night. And if was priced at this we wouldn’t have stayed as we would have expected all of the above for that price!

I'm not sure how long ago the AA gave this a 3* rating but on current form this hotel is a long way short of expectation. Whilst all of the staff were friendly and helpful the place itself was very disappointing. We arrived at lunchtime on Saturday on a damp but mild day and initial impressions count a lot. The lobby/reception area was really stuffy, the air stale and not at all welcoming. In late June you'd think that doors and windows might be open and that some fresh flowers wouldn't have broken the bank, but there was nothing to improve the atmosphere and relieve the tired and shabby look. Our room was perfectly acceptable for the price and the bed and linen extremely comfortable, but lying there, staring up at the ceiling revealed that attention to cleaning detail did not come top of the list as the threat of cobwebs above our heads descending in the night was ever present. The en suite was, again, adequate but the temperature of the water from the hot taps was dangerously high and should have carried a warning. The basin taps, themselves, were either lacking, or about to lack grips on the tap handle, most of which simply unscrewed with ease. As far as breakfast was concerned, the scrambled egg was overcooked (in my opinion) and I thought I had ordered 'grilled tomatoes' until it arrived, not a tomato (singular) but just half one medium-sized tomato! For a one night stay this was a tolerable experience, but I cannot possibly recommend this hotel to anyone and if you've booked your wedding reception here this summer I really do pity you.

Dropped in for leaving party of work colleague.Barman was engaged in conversation with person at end of bar.Served me when he was ready,no greeting very sullen and unfriendly.

I requested a PEPSI COLA as I was driving. He dispensed 200ml from bar mixer plonked in a lump of ice and uttered £2.No please or thank you.Absolute rip off! with bad manners thrown in.I bought 2 litre bottle of Pepsi from Tesco today for 99p.I appreciate they have to make a profit but that is extortion.

Certainly will not be visiting this establishment again. My advise keep clear of Olivers Lodge.

For one night only this is passable. Looks tired both inside and out and as other contributors have suggested Mr Carpet needs to be introduced to Mr Vacuum. Breakfast was fine and plentiful and the staff were all very pleasant. However, this hotel does leave itself open to the constant complainers.

My parents 50 wedding anniversary nearly ruined by this place! Room was filthy. Huge amounts of dust. About half a cm thick in places. Could not believe they said it had been cleaned. Even the replacement room needed attention. Staff ok but didn't seem to be familiar with good hotel practices. Never again.

I was worried reading some of the reviews on this hotel after my husband had booked it as a last minute option. However it was nowhere near as bad as I had anticipated. Staff were really pleasant, on arrival we were shown to a room in an annexe and it was a bit dusty, and windows and net curtains looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a while. However, the bathroom (only a shower in it) and the bedding was spotless. They'd upgraded us to a superior room so bottled water and biscuits provided. Toiletries were provided, and there were plenty of towels and pillows. A problem was sorted quickly with the tv. Breakfast was fresh and cooked to order but the fruit option consisted of tinned oranges, we didn't eat in the hotel restaurant as the only vegetarian option was pasta and I'm not a huge fan so gave it a miss. The location is good, five minute walk into town, supermarket nearby and lots of places to eat and drink. This is a family run hotel and they're working hard to survive in a challenging climate but they need to up their cleaning standards and look for the cobwebs and clean windows. The prices are on the low end though so have to say it's good value for money. We've stayed in a lot worse and paid a lot more!

We booked this last minute via the web. The transaction was very easy and reception staff very welcoming and efficient. We were shown to our room with an offer of bag carrying, very unusual these days. The room was large, bright and well equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, bottled water (no glasses though),fan etc. The bed was large and extremely comfortable with beautiful fresh, crisp linen but with only 3 pillows. The furniture was dated both in the room and in the public areas but it kind of worked. The public lounge was filled with squashy red sofas but no cushions but they were comfortable and the bar prices were very reasonable. We didn't use the restaurant but the cooked breakfast was superb and freshly cooked with an impressive additional choice of cereals, dried fruit and fresh fruit and toppings for toast. This was a last minute visit due to our daughters hospital admission and when we finally got our good news the barman bought us out a bottle of bubbles which was a lovely touch and very thoughtful. We did ask on night two for another pillow and more milk, we were advised as they were fully booked they weren't sure another pillow could be supplied but within minutes this and the milk were delivered. Our only complaint here was the dust in our room on all the skirting boards, door panelling and the furniture panels in our room and some of the grouting would have benefitted from some bleach/limescale remover. We paid a reduced fee of £58 nightly which we were satisfied with although at the full price of £90 we would have been disappointed and felt that the room did not warrant this cost.
