“Been here before.”

First the positives. Really looking forward to buffet dinner and it did not disappoint. Great waitress service and the food was excellent. Plenty of it and piping hot. Again the breakfast was well presented and well cooked. No excuse to go hungry. The seating area in the lounge is comfortable with plenty of room.
Now the negatives- The room was too warm and having one that was downstairs and facing the road unable to open a window as no small window to open only full size. No hot water despite leaving it to run for several minutes- staff aware but failed to warn us that this is common in the older part of the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose one on the first floor and overlooking lake as ground level noisy.

This hotel could be great, it is in a stunning location close by the bridge at St Ives, our family stayed two years ago and very little has changed, staff could be more helpful as one of our familys shower did not get hot after leaving it running for over five minutes, and all the reception could say that it needed running for longer, it never got hot.
The evening meal was from a buffet style which we found to be hot and good value, breakfast again was buffet type with lots of choices and very good.
This hotel needs better decor and modern furnishings, more helpful staff then it would be great.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a river view if possible, not by the road and car park.

We travelled from Preston Lancs as we were spending a night in St Ives to celebrate our Son's 40th birthday. We had booked only a standard room as it was for only 1 night. Saw some reviews and hoped we had not made a mistake about booking at The Dolphin. Our room was very clean, along with the bathroom. The shower was brilliant powerful and as hot as you wanted it. admittedly it was a shower curtain and the towels were not thick and fluffy but then what hotel is different in reasonable price range. The breaakfast was very good also. the staff were very friendly and helpful. I think this was tremendous value for money and would recommend it to anyone.

Had to stay there as everywhere else was full....
Poor quality rooms, awful service, mouldy bathroom suites in bile yellow, no hot water..
Wished I'd slept in my car.

As my partner is in a wheelchair we booked the bedroom with the 'roll in shower'. The bedroom itself had enough room to manoever a wheelchair but it really needed updating, and the bathroom was very badly laid out. The grab rails by the toilet were in the wrong place and the drop down one was no use at all. The whole bathroom area looked dirty, the grouting was black, the wall and floor tiles looked gruby, the shower seat had one foot broken off and there were no emergency call facilities. The shower just dribbled out as it needed a new shower head. It is very difficult to find good hotels with good facilities for wheelchair users and although the location is excellent I would not recommend this hotel for anyone who uses a wheelchair.

Location : amazing. Right on the river next to St Ives historic bridge. Beautiful
Food : Carvary most nights, large lounge bar however sometimes its hard to get a drink as bar staff disappear regularly. St Ives restaurants a stones through away.
Rooms: Very grotty. Yellow grout, Stale smell. Some rooms smell damp. Hot water a real problem.. i waited 40min to get hot water through and hotel staff just shrug. There was 10 of us staying .. only 3 still there as the rest of us moved.. all due to grotty rooms and lack of hot water. Towels you can spit through.. very worn and thin. Pity.. could have been a great hotel if not for the rooms. On one occassion I got moved to exec room - and i have to say this was a good room and hot water in abundance.

Room Tip: Eat here .. but dont stay

We met up with friends for a birthday reunion having booked well in advance. The web site creates the impression that it might be worth paying extra for an 'Executive ' room. When we enquired we were told that the rooms were better with views over the fields but that there was a wedding reception that evening and these rooms were above the function room and might be noisy. We appreciated the fact we were told this and opted for a standard room.
The room turned out to be shabby, one light did not work, the extractor in the bathroom was broken and some of the long life milk on the tea tray had solidified. The beds were very uncomfortable and the duvets barely covered the bed. In addition the room was stuffy without air conditioning and without windows that could be left open as the room overlooked the street. I barely slept a wink and my wife emerged the following morning with backache.
Breakfast (included) was fine but staff shortages meant that the service was slow and we had to constantly ask for additional items as they frequently ran out, particularly coffee.
The big plus is the location. Very pretty and in the heart of the town on the river. Staff were very friendly and when we did get service it was acceptable. There turned out to be no noise from the wedding party so with hindsight we should have upgraded, that would have taken the price from £85 to £105. We never saw an upgraded room so cannot comment on whether or not it would have been worth it.
One final point point, in the bathroom there was a sign saying that when showering one must close the bathroom door as the steam can set off the fire alarms! Thank goodness it didn't happen when we were there but really this sums the place up.

Room Tip: Check out the room before accepting and if possible before booking.
