This was an early Xmas present for my husband. The staff and service provided throughout was exceptional. The food which is cooked on board the train was very good. Despite staff warning all passengers to be back on the platform in plenty of time, 21 passengers somehow missed the train back from Edinburgh! These passengers were then taken by Virgin train to Carlisle where the West Coast train picked them up. The West Coast company had to pay Virgin trains to do this. The staff also made sure that these passengers did not miss out on their meal when they got back on board! If that is not going the extra mile, I don't know what is! I sincerely hope those tardy passengers expressed their gratitude to the staff. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves despite the very early start!

Just had to write a review on an amazing festive trip to Edinburgh..Nothing was too much trouble for the hard working staff from the moment we boarded the train. They were helpful, polite and enthusiastic all day even though it was a long hard day for them, they smiled. The food was fantastic, piping hot and very tasty---- thanks chef. The service was excellent.
We were kept informed at all times of any delays ( as there was a landslide on the return journey) the staff were very helpful to the few people who missed the return train and ensured they got home safely
Would highly recommend this company and will definitely be travelling with them again in 2016!!

Having been on similar days out to Edinburgh and Carlisle we were looking forward to the trip even though it was a very early start. We opted for First Class which was very comfortable and which provided us with tea/coffee and pastries on the way down and afternoon tea on our return journey which included tea/coffee, sandwiches and scones with cream. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful throughout the journey. The only problem occurred on the return journey when for some unknown reason the trains driver decided to carry on to Preston missing out Leyland Station where over 40 passengers intended to alight the train and where they like us had left there cars. We were the only train on the station as it was midnight when we arrived. We received a genuine apology from the train manager but nonetheless hanging about for more than 30 mins until a decision was made to arrange a bus to take everyone back to Leyland. Rather a disappointing end to what had been a lovely day out. As an aside if you do decide to try one of these days out avoid the bacon barmcakes. These are ready made and warmed up in a microwave so 'soggy' and not very appetizing.

We travelled on the Spirit of the Lakes on the Edinburgh Christmas Special from our local village of Cottingham. The whole day from start to finish was perfect. We treat ourselves to Pullman Dining seats and were not disappointed. The carriage was elegant and had been dressed for Christmas with bright decorations. We soon got in the Christmas mood. The service, staff and food were all excellent and we could not fault anything. Coming home everyone was chatting and laughing together. it was like a great party train! I would highly recommend West Coast Railways and in particular the special festive trip to Edinburgh from Bridlington.

We've been on a number of these trips in the past and always had a fantastic day with excellent service, yesterday was no different.

Originally planned to go from Preston to Bath/Bristol pickups included at Chorley. Due to rail works the route was changed and we were picked up early morning at Leyland. We knew it would be a long day due to the distance but were prepared for that and decided to treat ourselves to the premier dining and luxury seating.

Within 10 minutes of boarding we were offered tea/coffee followed by breakfast served to our table. Excellent food- full of flavour and well cooked- perfect. As others continued to board we could sit back and watch the world wake up as the towns passed by- very relaxing. The carriage was a bit hot and the steward quickly rectified once informed. All staff chatty, friendly and very attentive. We had tea/coffee & Danish's for eleven's to put us on for the day. It was very nice but not sure we needed it after the big breakfast- there again it was a long day and we had been up early.

We arrived in Bath- our chosen place to alight, approximately 5 minutes late due to another train behind time which we needed to follow into Bath. Overall a brilliant journey down and we now had approximately 5 hours to explore the Christmas markets and city of Bath.

Back to the station in time for our return, the train was 10 minutes late getting to the platform due to additional London trains and a huge volume of local passengers visiting the city. Once aboard normal perfect service resumed. The tables had been set with pre-ordered drinks, crackers and gifts of chocolate to take home, very festive. Within 20 minutes our meal was beginning to be served. Excellent food- well cooked, full of flavour, great service. Choice of three starters and the main was a traditional turkey dinner with a twist, cooked and presented to a 5*level. There was pudding, cheese & biscuits, mince pie plus tea/coffee. Nothing looked a great size but we were full, all of us having good appetites so plenty had been given.

Now to sit back/nod off until drop offs begin.

Our hiccup was that we missed our drop off, the driver being unable to stop due to a paperwork issue. This has never happened before in the 14 years travelling with this and other similar companies. When we, along with approx 40 others got off at the next stop, staff were very apologetic and quickly attempted to put things right. It's now past midnight and all local trains parked up so this is not an easy task. We were kept warm & well informed whilst taxi's were arranged and we were eventually returned back to Leyland. Overall 2 hrs later in bed than planned but all had a happy ending. We 'd had a great day out, we were safe and now an adventure to talk about to add to the bargain.

Our trip was a very long day but you can be realistic in your expectations as approximate timings are given. There are shorter trips available too.

Would we travel again with this company due to our extended long day & unexpected problems- yes we would.

If Network rail had allowed us the use of the lines for a further 20 minutes to go back with permission, our delay would not have been as long. No doubt they had their reasons not to help/co-operate, they have schedules to follow too and not all is always that simple.
