We stayed there two nights in a large comfortable well appointed room in period furniture. The room and ensuite was clean and warm and the bed comfortable. We had the carvery both nights which was excellent and found breakfasts equally as good. The staff were helpful and attentive.

The Down Inn has been pretty much the venue for all occasions in my family. My parents who met here 33 years ago have been coming back ever since. At 23 years old I have been coming here all my life every few months or so. In that time the Down has always lived up to expectations, unfortunately something has gone awfully wrong!

The service & food (apart from the carvery) was appauling!
We were seated and handed menus. A table of 5 we decided what we wanted pretty sharply. Closed the menus and placed them to one side. 15 minutes went by and no one came to take our order. 3 waitresses were stood 4/5 metres away at the bar talking. Eventually a waitress who looked like she had better things to be doing arrived and took our order....Food arrives shortly afterwards (quick service) but the waitress literally dumped the food and shot off. No "would you like any sauces or any more drinks?" When we did ask for sauce it took her 10 minutes, by that time we had all finished anyway.
The portions were dreadful. In the past, the Scampi and Chips came with an abundance of salad, a wedge of lemon, a big ramakin of Tartar sauce, chips and peas. This time, just scampi, a few chips and pease and a drizzle of sauce. No effort had gone into it. Vegetarian lasagne although tastey was just thrown onto the plate, again such a small portion!
The waitress literally dumped the food and shot off. No "would you like any sauces or any more drinks?" When we did ask for sauce it took her 10 minutes, by that time we had all finished anyway.
Credit where credit is due, my Dad had the carvery and it looked magnificant as always. Smelt good and apparently tasted fantastic. Gutted I didnt chose it.

After we finished out meals, which didnt take long apart from the carvery main, we asked for deserts. Baring in mind we had no food check, no request for more drinks or anything, the waitress again vanished. 20 minutes went by and we had all had enough of waiting. 5 coffees and 5 desserts were all on the cards. We asked for the bill and left.

Our conclusion - Carvery is fantastic, if you visit please go for it as I havnt found one equivilent as of yet. As for the main menu? Unless you are a child or enjoy small portions of frozen ready made food, then stay well clear.
The waitress seems to spend more time stood infront of the hot plate in the kitchen rather than tending to the diners.

Having checked out trip advisor, The Down appeared to be the only decent option in the Bridgnorth area for good rooms and nice food. We were very happy with our accommodation! Both the family room (1) and the single room (7) were excellent with room (1) being large enough for two extra beds if needed.
The food was excellent, we all opted for the Carvery which was great value, crunchy veges and good meat.
The beer was also up to scratch, with a landlord happy to offer free tasting.

The Down Inn lived up to all high expectations following the reading of earlier reports. It is probably unusual for guests to stay for almost a week as we and six friends did and it was in this way that we came to appreciate the wonderful warm welcome from all the staff. Our experience of establishments where the patron is present is that they can have the edge over those which are run by big business, good though they can be, and it is certainly true in this case.

This was our 3rd visit to the Down Inn & we have recommended the Down Inn to friends previously. This visit didn't start too well though...We visited with our youngest child this time & on entering our room noticed there was no bed made up for him...In fact we had to search for the bed finding it in the wardrobe...had to make up the bed & use what bedding we could find. On using the shower the shower head fell apart in my hands & when I'd pieced it together had to play around for about 20 mins to find a position where the showerhead didn't spray all over the bathroom floor. Despite this "Fawlty Towers" beginning to our stay we did have a good break with some excellent food served & will put this down as a "one off" & maybe return later this year

I was impressed by the TA reviews, but frankly the place did not live up to it. While the room itself was brand new, spacious, clean and comfortable, the general atmosphere was just average. Thinnest duvets i have ever come across. I guess it all depends on what you are expecting, and if you were looking forward to any form of elegance or touch you will be disappointed. We also felt it was over priced given what it offered having stayed recently in places for just a little more that knock the Down Inn into a cocked hat. We did not eat in the "restaurant" (ie bar area). Cooked breakfast was also average - nothing out of the ordinary. I guess that sums up the establishment, just meets minimum expectations and shows absolutley no imagination in touch or going just a tad further than that. Staff were decent, but like the rest of the place, nothing out of the ordinary.

Room Tip: Room 1 was a good size. Quiet.
