“Great Room,Great People,Great Food!”
Reviewed 8 November 2012

We decided to try The Down Inn as I had a couple of people to visit in the area.

It was a last minute decision to stay and as soon as I called up to see if they had any rooms I knew that this place would be good. The lady was so friendly and helpful and we got a great deal by booking direct with the hotel.

Our check in was seemless and the lady who checked us in seemed genuinely happy to see us. She was a breath of fresh air after a long journey in the cold and dark. The roaring log fire was a lovely welcoming touch also.

Our room ( Room 2 ) was perfect. Spotlessly clean, warm, spacious and very well equipped. The bed was so comfortable.

We decided to have a carvery in the evening ( having read the reviews on TA ) and we were so impressed. I always remember being taken to a carvery in the 1970's as a child by my parents and remember how much of a treat that seemed. ( Thick slices af meat, crispy roast potatoes and perfect vegetables ! ) My opinion of carveries has been somewhat tainted during adulthood due to the "cheap and nasty" chains that have appeared everywhere. That was until I had The Downs Inn carvery...it brought back all those happy childhood memories of what a "real" carvery should be.

It was perfect and so filling...not to mention great value at £8.50!

Due to the really comfortable bed we actually overslept and missed breakfast! I was so impressed that the lady who checked us in offered to make us one despite our late showing! We declined but what about that for quality of service and kindness.

With so many inns closing and struggling I always ask myself what is the formula for success. I honestly do not know what the answer is but one thing is for sure....The Downs Inn knows the answer! It is a blue print for everything that is good about the traditional British Inn.

We loved every minute of our stay.

Thank you all for making our stay so pleasant. We will certainly stay again.

Room Tip: Room 2 is lovely.

We recently visited The Downs for Sunday Lunch, and found the place to be great value for money.
Having had a bad experience at The Punchbowl, we decided to give The Downs a try, and so glad we did, nice people, very welcoming, great food, highly recommended.

Do yourself a favour, give the Punchbowl a miss, not worth it, and pay a visit to this establishment, you will not be disappointed, a lovely welcoming business.

Stayed twice at the Down Inn while in the area forwork, each time the room was very spacious and clean.
The staff are helpfull and efficient.
Breakfast served from 7 am and is good quality.
Beer is good and fresh , twisted spire kept well.
Carvery is ample but maybe the beef was a little over done for my taste.
Will certainly stay here again.

My partner and I stayed at The Down Inn for one night during October 2012 and when we visit the area again will look no further than The Down Inn for accommodation. On arrival we were booked in and shown to our room straight away by a charming young women. The room on the first floor was excellent, large and beautifully decorated with a lovely bathroom. Plenty of tea, coffee and chocolate together with lovely biscuits. The bar had a very good selection of beers and all very well served. After having a really good carvery we retired to a very comfortable bed. The FULL english breakfast was so good we did not feel the need to eat until early evening that day. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff on duty.

As we were unable to get a last minute table at The Punchbowl on sunday we called the Down Inn and they managed to fit in our large party for an early lunch. Our family have been enjoying sunday lunch at The Punchbowl for over 5 years now and, although it's very good and we have never had a problem with it, we were all exceptionally pleased with The Down Inn. The roast meats on offer were turkey, beef and pork. They were all cooked perfectly and you were given a very generous portion. The vegetables on offer were excellent too, with a big choice to suit all. The roast potaotes were real proper homemade crispy ones, very rare to find in a pub/restaurant these days. All in all we found the service and lunch very good, so good in fact that we will be visiting The Down for sunday lunch from now on. We have already spread the word to our family and friends.

Title says it all, we used to be regular visitors to the Punchbowl just a mile away, it was on one of the many occasions that we called at the Punchbowl and it was closed that we ventured a little further and happened upon the Down Inn. We havent been back to the Punchbowl since. The choice of meat and vegetables is always enormous and consistantly tasty. The Carvery itself seems to be available whenever the Pub is open, weve recently called in at 7pm on a Sunday and 12.30 on a Monday Lunchtime, the Carvery was in full swing on both occasions. I would recommend booking if wishing to dine on a Sunday Lunchtime, especially if you would like the much coveted window tables. All in all, excellent food at excellent prices.

Used The Down Inn for our daughter and son in laws wedding breakfast and evening party, the food was devine from starters to coffee, staff were professional, pleasant and service was efficient, our day run like clock work, the buffet was presented with perfection and was to a very high standard. We had booked all the upstair rooms in the hotel, and on taking the bags up we found wonderful rooms, beautifully decorated, squeaky clean bathrooms, with humungus fluffy towels, and comlimentary soaps. The bed was clearly new and dressed in crisp white sheets and good pillows, there was a kettle with a selection of beverage and two types of biscuits which looked delicious. Breakfast was equally as good as everything before, a selection of fresh juice, cereal and hot toast, the full english breakfast was piping hot, well presented and cooked to order, again faultlesss. We will be back thank you.

Room Tip: none of the rooms are over the funtion room
