We came upon this delightful looking pub by accident when looking for accommodation in the Bath area. With charm abounding it was just what we were looking for. The room was large, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Unfortunately there was a damp smell and there was a dehumidifier running in the bathroom.

A lack of a proper shower in the bathroom meant trying to shower using the hand held showerhead over the bathtub, result water everywhere and hence the need for the dehumidifier. Even the prints on the wall above the bathtub were wet and had been wet many times. It was obvious this was an ongoing problem when looking at the water damage in the bathroom.

Our main problem was noise. Unbelievably the extremely loud noise of the pub compressors across the driveway kept us awake all night.

The meals were pleasant if a little expensive and the breakfast was very good.

We would not stay there again.

My girlfriend and i came here on our second visit in October 2013, knowing this inn is a charming and luxurious place to stay when visiting Bath. It's close enough to Bath if you're driving (only a 10 minute drive) but situated in a quintessential West Country village.

Our room was to an excellent standard including a large, comfortable bed, a spacious and clean bathroom and simple but inviting decor, overall very cosy.

The breakfast that's included was delicious with a lot of choice, both from the menu and from the 'breakfast buffet'. We also ordered an evening meal which was also very tasty, along with having very good service throughout the meal. We dined next to an open fire and amused ourselves with the selection of board games on offer.

We found the owner of the Wheelwrights Arms to be very helpful throughout our stay and was always on hand to recommend places to visit in the Bath area.

The next time we visit Bath, we'll definitely be staying here again!

On our christmas market trip to Bath we decided to stop to have some lunch.
What a poor decision we made. On arrival we were shown to our table.
We ordered a very simple lunch. The description on the menu was misleading the caibatta steak consisted on tiny silvers of meat and lots of onions. The bread was tasteless and cold. Obviously they were trying to keep their costs down at the expense of providing a decent sandwich lunch.
The salad arrived minus the main ingredient crispy pigs ears. Also then arrives over cooked potatoes they were cold.
When we asked to see the manager who appears very inexperienced and dismissive of my husbands comments who has been in catering for thirty five years. The manager was rude and disagreed with what he said. This of course is his prerogative but it was obviously devoid his vocabulary did not include the phrase 'customer service'
Nevertheless to say we would not recommend this inn.

Stayed for 1 night at the Wheelwrights Arms earlier this week. Our room was very good - spacious, a very comfortable bed, spotlessly clean, lots of nice touches including bathrobes and bath sheets (rather than the usual bath towels), L'Occitane toiletries etc. The staff were professional, friendly and helpful. We had a very good evening meal and breakfast, and will definitely return next time we're in the area.

We had a dinner there. Based on the web site information, dinner is served 6pm to 9:30pm. We had a reservation for 8pm, hoping that service will be quick.
Firstly, parking lot is quite small. Although restaurant was not full, parking was. We however squeezed into last parking spaces available.
Overall ambience is mixed. They certainly decided to retain pub atmosphere, so there is pub-style bar and the fireplace (which was on). Problem is there are way too many tables so place is quite loud and the service times are mediocre.
I ordered scallops as a starter and a steak as a main. No food at all appeared in first ~hour, then both starter and main appeared one right after another. Scallops were quite modest portion, so the steak. Food tasted alright. Check came out at ~£30 per person.
Check included 10% service charge which I believe is a lot for the place one have to wait food for an hour and step out of one's way to attract waiter's attention.

As a final act of the day, when we already paid and were departing, all smoke from the fireplace started to come out into the restaurant, which triggered fire alarm. Staff however was not surprised at all, as if it happens all the time - they just opened doors to let the smoke out.

in a summary: very average experience

Hi AX9465,

We are sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience at the Wheelwrights Arms. The floor staff from the evening in question have been reminded to always be looking for customers in need of service.

We only have 14 tables in the restaurant, so to have any less wouldn't really work!

Regarding your service times, we can see from our electronic system that you ordered within 20 minutes of being seated, and had finished your starters in 37 minutes from that point. Everything is cooked fresh here at the Wheelwrights and we do not feel that those timings are unreasonable.

As with any pub fireplace, occasionally enthusiastic customers can smother it and lead to an escape of smoke. The staff are trained to handle this calmly - it does happen once or twice during the season. Better we think than enforcing an evacuation to the car park!

We stumbled across Monkton Combe as we travelled through Bath, The Wheelwrights pub was quaint and set in a wonderful surrounding. We negotiated a price for the room which we thought was a little expensive. The room was clean and tidy with a lovely bathroom. Two small complaints, we where given the room opposite the kitchen which was very noisy, and the rather strange behaviour of the operator. They could be a little more discreet around their security, like standing at the doorway taking photos of us checking out!!
The evening meal was lovely and served by a friendly young lady.
We are from New Zealand and dont have this type of village setting with such old world charm, it was such a eye opener to walk around your Church and streets and take in all the views and history. Monkton Combe we would recommend to any person to visit. Just such a lovely place.

Nice pub with good food and lovely staff, spoiled by a rude Fawlty-esq owner who makes sotto-voice comments about customers who sit talking all evening playing with their glasses and blocking up the tables. Woe betide you if you order a glass of tap water with your meal! If you are not a big spender then don't bother - you'll leave having incurred the ire of Basil.
