“what a transformation since new broom sweeps clean”

Since Paddy Crerar's Crearar hotels took over the helm this hotel has improved enormously and the ghost of Swallow hotels is a thing of the past. The Crerar six course dinner taster menu which proved a success story in his other hotels is considerably better in terms of both quality and choice than the Swallow offering which was "hard to swallow"to coin a phrase. There was enough on offer on this 6 course table d'hote to avoid paying a supplement for the a la carte, however vegetarians may disagree.
I booked an upgrade to an executive double and we were given the four poster room with jacuzzi bath and power shower and a large flat screen tv with freeview satellite channels.
I asked for a dvd player and this materialised at once along with a complimentary bowl of fruit, bottled water and bathrobes.I suspect that our loyalty as regular visitors was being rewarded .
Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful and dinner and breakfast were excellent.
My wife used the pool which was not overwarm but we both enjoyed the jacuzzis both in the leisure club and the room.

Room Tip: old part of house

Having been here 5 months ago I was reluctant to come back. The place was tired, dirty and the staff didn't know their left from right!!!

However, that being said, this time around was a delight. The hotel is now freshly refurbished and tastefully decorated. A little dark, but that's not a big issue. The front entrance is now welcoming, although the dozens of deer skulls are rather creepy!

Reception girl was lovely, checked us in and we headed to our room. The happiness wavered, as we walked up rickety old stairs that felt unstable in a dusty, smelly setting, but our room was pleasant enough.

We had dinner inclusive, which was a 6 course menu. It was delicious however we were left feeling peckish after the tiny portions!! The service in restaurant was fantastic, if the food was better then I would recommend coming far and wide just for the friendly smiles from the girls! Sheena the waitress gave us some print outs of local walks and attractions and recommended a couple of distilleries to visit which was a great help, herself and the team made our weekend what it was! They were a delight!

The pool is what it is. The roof however is missing!! We were shocked to notice the roof had been replaced with tarpaulin!!

All in all, a good (child free!!!) break was had! Would recommend!

The areas that have been refurbished have been done to a high standard and the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms and some areas not yet done were "tired" but when the rest of the work is finished it should be excellent.
There is a large pool and gym, with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.
The food was excellent and the taster menu gave an opportunity to try new things, but with other choices still available on the a la carte and bar menus.
I look forward to returning when the work is all finished and the hotel is restored to what it clearly once was as a country house hotel sitting in its own large grounds.

Very nice hotel, and location, booked through an online offer. The room was ok, although the "double" room consisted of two single mattresses pushed together, but did make for an awful lot of room in the bed! Food was generally good, although my travelling partner had langoustines which were returned due to being unsatisfactory, and on the second morning the breakfast was decidedly lukewarm (with a similar service level from a rather flustered waitress)

Driving up the tree lined drive i thought i was in for a real treat.lovely country retreat.oh how wrong was i.the whole place inside is dark dinjy and dated accompanied by a damp smell.
My room is a joke 101 on the ground floor with no view.the bed is a fold out bed from what looks like a wardrobe that has damaged slats.the bedding and towels have seen better days and the lighting is so poor its hard to see how grubby it is.i was even more disgusted that they charged £5 for a pint.this is the first and the last time i will be staying here.

Stayed three nights 2/7/13, elderly couple on DBB rate.
Staff lovely, friendly and efficient
We had fresh towels daily-nice large bathroom with shower, clean bathroom and bedroom, tho' bedroom had two windows it did have a sloping roof
We had a view of parkland where a deer came daily to feed
We did not use spa or pool, but it looking inviting.
Six course taster menu was adequate for our appetite, but I can appreciate that it would not satisfy younger folk(tho'the option to purchase from a la carte menu at reduced prices was available)
The food was very well presented, well cookedand very tasty(but yes small taster portions)
We loved the old furnishings, decor and restful seating area.
When makeover is finished this will be Crerar hotels normal standard.

Hotel appears to be mid make-over. We went for dinner only, and did not stay over. The restaurant manager was very friendly and the waiting staff polite and efficient. However the quality of the food was disappointing given the price of the meal and the surroundings. Portion sizing also questionable. Final straw was cheesecake which was crushed digestive next to some "squirty" cream!
