Tulloch Castle Hotel

Stayed there for a weekend and not what expected from a four star hotel. The whole hotel is in need of some TLC, outside paint work needing done. Room 5 had had a leak through the ceiling at one point and the wall paper badly stained and ceiling had had a badly done patch up job. The floor in our bedroom was on a slope obviously with the age of the castle but that adds to the character but the furniture was all sloping forward due to this and the wardrobe door was hard to open, the dressing table drawer fell apart when we tried to open it so decided best left alone. No hair dryer in our room.
On a positive our room was really warm and cosy and clean. Most of the staff were really nice and friendly and went out of their way to help you. Wish we could have said that re the receptionist on Sunday morning 13/4/2014 when we went to check out, tried to overcharge us saying there was a surcharge on the bill to which she could not explain what it was for nor did we get a full breakdown of the account which you would normally get, she eventually removed the surcharge but you could see she was not happy and no other words were spoken from her, found her rude and not a people person not a person you would expect on the reception desk.
When we arrived at the hotel other lovely receptionist told us there was going to be a ceilidh on the Saturday night and we might have some disturbance but we never heard a thing and she also showed us to our room and explained because of alterations one of the restaurants was out of use and explained where else to go.
The food was good apart from the hotel being out of mushrooms and fish and two of the draught lager pumps broken in the bar.
A lovely quite location with plenty of things to see and do in the local area.

Not your typical castle as the building has changed significantly since the 'castle' time. However it does have great history and beautifully furnished rooms. Our room was at the back so no view, the beds were fine and the temperature could be easily changed to suit. The only disappointing thing was the obvious lack of care from the room cleaners - previous occupants food wrappers in top drawer of dresser, beds not made properly and back of toilet not cleaned. Had dinner in the bar and service was very good and just the usual pub fare. Breakfast was great and in the dining room and service again was excellent.

Yes it is in need of attention, but it's very old and there's a lot of it! Reception was efficient and friendly, room was decent size - agreed a bit tired but not worryingly so - a few dinks and nicks here and there, that's all. Very traditional and castley. Few mod cons, as you might expect.

The biggest problem is the sound insulation (lack of) - I heard two different alarms going off, one in the adjacent room and one above mine. The room above was particularly lacking in soundproofing - and boy did those people up there like walking around and around their room! The floors are creaky when people above walk on them and you have to expect that - we'll all get creaky with age - but clearly hearing alarms going off (and people talking, toilet flushing, shower water hitting the floor) is a bit too much.

Breakfast was pretty good too - full Scottish, toast, coffee/tea, crossiants, cereals, juices - a good selection and very friendly service.

The place is interesting, it's not "Adams Family" or "Fawlty Towers" (as claimed in some reviews on here) at all from my experience - it's full of character and feels very Scottish indeed - perhaps overdone for some?

Value for money was excellent - I'd happily stay again - but ask for the room with a vacant room above!!

Efficient and friendly check in with the offer of help for my bags. Would advise anyone staying here to keep luggage to a minimum because of all the stairs you encounter. Room 3 where I stayed this time was bright and cheerful. The bed was comfortable, ensuite was small but did the job ok. Decor a wee bit tired but it is a charming old building and I think you need to take this into consideration. It must be difficult to keep this place up. The one negative I had for my room was that it smelled very strongly of aftershave/deodorant or air freshener and was quite an oppressive gagging smell. However solved easily with opening a window.
WiFi good in this room, reception and the restaurant.
Food in the restaurant was good and simple although portion sizes for the main course were a bit on the small side. Overall very happy and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Some rooms are quite dark..........

I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights for business. The hotel is quite imposing sat half way up a hill over looking Dingwall. I was in room 7 which was up several flights of stairs and didn't have much of a view. The room was spacious clean and pleasant to stay in. A small but functional en suite and modern tv with free view. A desk to work at and free WiFi which worked well. The hotel itself is a little tired in places and the carpets and curtains are a bit rough but if you want character it has that in spades. I think it's slightly under staffed but the staff are very friendly and very helpful when you can find one. The restaurant is very good with quality food from local suppliers. The menu is a little small in no of choices but it's cooked very well. I would stay here again and makes an excellent base to explore from. I have only given 4 stars due to staff shortage and slightly expensive food and drink but you don't have a choice unless you want a trek into Dingwall.
