This time I did not have room 8 where things don't so much go bump in the night as light up as in the television coming on of its own accord at 3 in the morning! Good hotel though it is in need of some tender loving care.

This is the first review I have left before because I felt I had to warn people.

We stayed on Sunday 18th May.

When we arrived we were taken to the room but were not shown in. As soon as we had the key and opened the door the lady was now where to be seen and it was immediately apparent why. The smell of the room was absolutely disgusting. The bathroom was incredibly damp and the shower curtain was dirty. Wallpaper was coming off the ceiling in the main room and the walls were peeling in the bathroom. The sink was in the same room as the bedroom, not in the bathroom. We waited for a couple of minutes before deciding that there was no chance we could stay in the room, especially for £79. To be honest we wouldn't have paid £30.

When we went to complain we were offered another room but only for 1 night, the only option for the second night was a twin room meaning we would have to move the next day. Unfortunately this meant we had to cut our visit short. Funnily enough the lady just said no problem to a room change straight away and declined the opportunity to go view the room so it was clear that they knew the state of the room but obviously were trying there luck.

The room we got in the end was a 4 Poster Bed room which was massive. The decor was tired but it added to the character, after all it is a very old building.

The next day when we went to check out it was a different lady, maybe the manager, who was not welcoming at all. She asked if we had been asked to pay a cancellation charge for the second night, even though it was not our fault that we couldn't stay in the original room. She said she didn't check the rooms, that was up to the maintenance people. At no point did any of the staff apologise for the fact that the room we were put in was completely unacceptable. They must try this all the time in hope that people won't complain.

The only reason we have given this a 'poor rating' rather than 'terrible' is because the restaurant was very nice and the building is very impressive. The food was superb and the waiter very friendly. We had a walk around the building and some of the rooms are fantastic.

Unfortunately we won't be going back here, unless we go for a meal. We came from the north east so it was a long way to travel for such an unpleasant experience.

Room Tip: Make sure you check the room before accepting it as at least 1 of them is not acceptable!

We stayed t this lovely old castle hotel for one night in May, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The room was lovely and full of character with a lovely view of sheep on the hill from the bathroom. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were also very good.

I think this is one of those "you hate it" or "you love it" places.
Luckily we fell into the latter category.
The staff was excellent all round.
The food was very good as was the location.
Staying in a haunted castle was a hoot, getting to poke around the quirky old place.
Ignore the peeling wall paper and enjoy

My family and I recently had a meal at the castle, portions were small, salmon made me I'll for 2 days, when trying to order a drink for my 2 year old, I was told there was no small bottles or cartons or even a straw she could drink though, only a glass! My partner had to go home to fetch her a carton of juice! One of the meals was forgotten about and the girl serving us wasn't very helpful. There was a drunk abusive man in the bar who was swearing in front of my child, no staff asked the man to leave. Overall very disappointing!!

yes the building needs a lot of TLC, but so would you if you were between 500 and 700 years old . however you soon forget the peeling wallpaper, the water damage, and somewhat dated and tired interior , when you meet the staff. Laura and Nicola are without a doubt the friendliest and most welcoming staff i have come across in my travels. Every time they go past you they are checking everything is ok , and if we need anything. Graeme on the bar was a good lad too.

The building needs a lot of care and attention though , but working with buildings of a similar age i do appreciate the cost of such repairs and such, but it will be years , and probably millions before the building can be all that it could be.

Only major complaint was half an hour wait for breakfast, and half an hour wait for a latte

We were warmly welcomed by a friendly receptionist and shown to room 11. Nice view but on the top floor. The room was very comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast was good, sausages could have been better, but other items were fine. A very old building, and querky in places, full of history and a ghost!
