“Great potential, but highly disappointing”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

We stayed at this hotel for one night in May for a weekend trip to the highlands. From pictures we saw online of the hotel and our initial impressions of its outside quaintness when we first arrived, we had high expectations of our stay. However, as time went on, this optimism did not last long. Once entering the hotel, we could see many areas where minor repairs are needed and in some cases, short term solutions, such as carpet squares on the ceiling to cover up water leaks in the bar area were clear to see. Our room was basic, but clean. However, the TV reception was terrible and when it came to the evening, we were unable to close the curtains. Additionally, that night we could hear everything that was going on downstairs on a busy Saturday evening in a pub; shouting and very loud music reverberated around the room. We were aware that the room did not have an en-suit toilet, however we would have expected it to be cleaner, have hand soap to wash our hands with and a toilet paper dispenser of some kind. Also, the shower (a tube connected to the bath tap) temperature was very difficult to control, so much so that I badly burnt the top of my scalp. We were also fortunate enough to have eaten at the Conon Bridge Hotel. This entailed a three course meal of warm microwaved dishes in an empty restaurant area with the owners, who were not the most friendly to their new guests. Just a word of warning to other travellers - If you are staying this area, make sure you get to a restaurant by 7:30pm at the latest as every restaurant we tried to go to in surrounding area (15 miles), closed its kitchen at 8pm or earlier. On a positive note, our breakfast was adequate (only slightly greasy) and was served in a nicer room to that of dinner. Overall, we were very disappointed with our stay at this hotel. The building is located in a lovely location and has great architecture. It has such potential to be a top rate hotel, but invariably falls far short of that description. For what we paid, I would expect far more and a much cleaner & better kept establishment. It is safe to say I will not be returning to this hotel in the future.

Spent three nights there in room 14 which has not improved since the previous reviews. The bed was the worst we have ever slept in, the corridors smelt of mould and the ceiling mould was still there but had been painted over. For the price you can do a LOT, LOT, LOT better.
The food was excellent and the staff we dealt with most obliging .. but the hotel decor and fittings let them down badly!!

This hotel makes Fawlty Towers look like a 5 star hotel! We booked a double en-suite room and a twin en-suite room for one night on Sat 7th Sep '13. The back door entrance is shabby and overgrown with weeds and trees and the unfriendly welcome from the receptionist is a put-off right away. Our sons had room 9 the twin room, which looked out onto a rusty, moss covered fire escape (surely a health and safety issue in itself?). The en-suite is awful, dirty and the shower is held together with a piece of string and doesn't work properly. I advised the boys to use our shower as I was concerned about how safe it was, only to find out next morning that our shower didn't work either - the temperature control for the cold was missing and it would have scalded you. So we had to use the mixer shower in the disgusting communal bathroom. The bath and shower curtain were really dirty. The hotel had signs of damp everywhere and smelt of stale smoke. Our room 14 had a large mould patch on ceiling and the bed was hard and lumpy. The noise from the karaoke in the bar was awful, felt as if it was in our room and all conversations from the smokers below our window could be heard. We had a table booked for a party of 20 in the lounge at 6pm that night (including our 18 month old and a 6 year old). The food was excellent and the staff serving were very good. Toys were provided, so after dessert I let our 18 month old out to play with her cousin. At this point a party of 5 were seated behind us and we had been there for over 2 hours. The chef (I'm assuming she was the owner) came out and shouted across the lounge that the children had to be seated and were in the way. Her attitude and total unprofessional manner was disgusting. She then went back in shouting at her staff that "she had done the job they should have done!". When I then took the baby upstairs, I had to pass her in the bar with her staff lined up giving them a lecture. We spent lots of money in her restaurant that night so she should hang her head in shame at how she treated customers. After a terrible nights sleep, breakfast next morning began with cereal and milk that was going "off". By the time we noticed I had fed my baby her cereal. When it was pointed out, the milk was replaced. This extremely worried me. The cooked breakfast was really good. I read some of the reviews before we went here. I thought they were exaggerated but I can assure everyone they are not! This poor hotel is in serious need of TLC and maintenance but it doesn't seem as if the owners are listening to any reviews on here. Its in a good location but not being used to its full potential. To charge for 2 en-suite room knowing the showers don't work is a total rip-off. Its the worst hotel experience we have ever had!

Please do not go to this hotel.
We were in room 14, mould on the ceiling, the shower was so hot we could not use it(thermostat control was missing) this was mentioned in an other review in August 2012, a year and still nothing done very poor.
The bed so so uncomfortable you could not have a decent sleep. The room could of done with a deep clean.
Breakfast was nice, the service was very common and noisy shouting across the restaurant to a resident, then shouting in the kitchen.
There was a vacuum cleaner just abandoned in the lounge with the cable pulled out no cleaning sign someone could easy trip.
Now to the good point glad we only had to suffer one night.

Room Tip: To choose a good room go to an other hotel.

My partner and I were booked in there on Tuesday 20th August, for a double en-suite room. It was only when we arrived that we were informed the room had a plumbing problem and they could not let it. We were offered a twin room, with shared bathroom and toilet. The bedroom was over the beer garden, next to the boiler room and was incredibly run down. Cigarette burns and stains in the carpet, torn wallpaper and someone else's clothes in the drawer!! The discount we were offered was 2 free pints with our meal. We decided to stay, but after an hour in there I felt really depressed and then in another bedroom a dog howled for over 30 minutes. We decided to leave, to the surprise of the owner. A high price tag of £80 for the night for very shabby, poor service and facilities. Avoid this place!!!

We stopped here on route to the Isle of Lewis and had an interesting evening.
We had 2 rooms, one en-suite and one not. The rooms were basic and clean but the whole place needs a major refit. The showers don't always deliver hot water.
The food here is fantastic and i'd highly recommend it for a meal, however the service did leave a lot to be desired.

Stayed here while doing some hillwalking. I got a single room at £35 B&B." which was cheap.

That's where the good news ended. The hotel was very run down, the bedroom was horribly dated and uncomfortable, the shares bathroom was very damp and smelly, the gents toilet in the bar was the most disgusting I've ever seen (or rather smelled!) the staff were uninterested and the whole place was just amateur and appalling.

Add to that the woman who had the worst smoker's cough ever having a coughing for while carrying my breakfast! Mmmmm, tasty!

Anyway, avoid this place like the plague because even £35 is way overpriced.
